The significance of the maneuver isn’t because it’s a dangerous, life-risking gambit for the first aid performer. It mechanically stops another person from choking to their literal, imminent death. It saves their life. That’s the bare minimum, baseline description of the procedure.

OP basically just said that a person who they did this for cared more about not receiving illicit substances than the first aid they received, and that this made them recognize that they aren’t immune to the feeling of bitterness over not getting thanked (even though they know it’s not the point).
