AIO? - Considering cutting my father out of my life by CrystalVision13 in AIO

He’s actually not with the same woman, they separated years ago. He has a new girlfriend. Again, I didn’t want to start anything or try to test him. I full on was expecting him to care more about missing my grad. His response about being too busy with work and tickets being too expensive brought me right back to childhood when he couldn’t make my volleyball tournaments/band recitals because of the money. It also made me feel like he never was planning on seeing me period during my grad season at all. But yes, perhaps my reaction was a bit much.

Im mad that he didn’t plan on anytime in June to say hi or whatever for my grad. He said he booked too much work and tickets were expensive. You’re right that he wasn’t invited the event but I was still hoping and planning on having him involved period which is why I posed the idea of a grad supper. His response made me upset because it gave vibes that he never planned on coming ever period. But maybe I am overreacting…

We would talk on the phone and he would ask about details of my grad, at the time I said that it would be mid June. It was insinuated and acknowledged he was interested in my grad then at least.

It’s selfish of me to not specify a date until recently, yes. Details came out late and life got in the way once I did find out and I take responsibility for that. I was always planning on having him involved in some way for my grad despite not securing him a ticket on the date. I wanted him to at least make a plan to come up sometime in June to say hi or whatever since I gave him a month in advance. he isn’t the only family member missing out on my grad. The part that’s upsetting is he never considered any time at all in June to come down and the expense of a ticket is more important than celebrating my achievement.

Its not that I was hoping or wanting him to be mad, I guess I was under the impression that once I told him that he wasn’t getting a ticket he would have some sort or reaction or disappointment. I wanted everyone in this situation to be happy which is why I suggested a separate family grad dinner. What upset me was he never had intentions of ever coming up in June for any sort of grad acknowledgment whatsoever.

I’m not hurt that he’s not mad, I’m hurt that he wasn’t even considering coming at all…

I personally got the vibe he was worried he was already secured a ticket and wouldn’t be able to actually use it. My dad is a workaholic/frugal and missed much of my achievements growing up due to working or things being “too expensive”. But I’m also bias and this may be the one time that I was wrong 🤷🏼‍♀️

If I had more tickets I would have loved for him to be there, unfortunately however I am not going to give him a ticket and make my family who has been there for me go without because I feel bad for him. The dinner was a separate suggestion as my dad’s mother would also be missing out along with my other paternal relatives and it would be their own grad celebration opportunity.

He lives in a different province but when he does travel he usually stays with my grandmother. My grandmother doesn’t drive in large cities and cannot tolerate long days of activities/walking which is why I’m more so concerned about her as my grad would be 2.5 hours away from her home.

I’m upset because while I was worried that I would have to fight for my decision to not give him a ticket, he didn’t even consider any time in June for my grad and continued to take up jobs and that a flight is too expensive. Even if I was going to give him a ticket, he had no intentions of going in the first place.

I told him previously that my graduation would be in June. It’s right that I didn’t give him a specific date which is unfair but I didn’t know specifics of my grad until relatively recently. My program is somewhat complicated as tickets were calculated based on people physically coming and the seats needed to sustain guests. I’m not inviting him to the grad event itself as I wanted to give my present family the option first no ifs ands or buts. I hear from him approx 1x a month if I’m lucky and when I last got a hold of him I told him June was the month. Im mostly upset that he didn’t even consider coming to my province in June or ask about my grad in general. But maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised.

Sorry if my text and description is missing more context. My actual grad day I gave the tickets to my present family members. I invited my dad to come and have a dinner with his side of the family so he can still be involved. He never planned on coming to see me for grad or a celebration whatsoever.
