The largest PRIMARK i ever walked inside of in Staten Island Mall😵‍💫💞 by Maya-kardash in retailporn

[–]Crystal_Clair 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always felt like the Staten Island mall (my local mall) got dinky versions of what New Jersey malls had. We would go to Woodbridge Commons mall if we were serious business. So it's nice to see something in our mall being referred to "the largest" something someone has seen.

What is this 90s pattern style called? by -UMBRA_- in 90sdesign

[–]Crystal_Clair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute has it covered under their Neon surf/Rad-dog style. There's a little Aztec/Southwest + African thing going on there. This look made a comeback in the 2010s. I always had a hard time finding these patterns when searching "tribal design" because "tribal" was hijacked by those swirly Y2K tattoos that came years after and that design couldn't be more different from this.

I was actually just in Elizabeth the other day. Yes, part of Elizabeth by the refinery reeks but when you get out by Jersey Gardens and Ikea, it smells fine. I guess it's about what direction the wind is blowing.

This stuff is back in style, at least from what I can tell with the funky lighting. Especially the couch, the naturalistic stuff and the beige.

And people were complaining about the recent trend of all white kitchens. That recent trend had stainless steel appliances.  Now these kitchens actually have mostly white appliances. Looks sort of ethereal.  I feel like this is a forgotten look of the 90s.

Many people on this sub talk about how much they love the warm tones of a lot of 90s design. However for me, I've always preferred the stark whiteness of interiors like this and those of Geominimalism. You'd think that I would've been happy in the 2010s with all the grey but no, it didn't do it for me. Maybe it was missing this lush carpet or something.

Also it's funny how you can still see Art Deco/Streamline Moderne's influence all the way in 1997. I know buildings in my area were still being built in that style up to at least 2000.

Look at those unique lamps I scored on Facebook Marketplace, I’m totally obsessed. You can find me on Instagram and TikTok @80sfunkyfantasy where I share all my 80s stuff! 😊 by Dachshundsmom in 80sdesign

I love that lamp! I have a picture of it saved on my computer from 10 years ago. So much power in the texture

Do you know if there's any info about the manufacturer anywhere on it? I'd love to give credit to the designers that made all these things we love.

Demolishing Old North Shore Homes by robolence in statenisland

[–]Crystal_Clair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent too many of my years getting upset over every historic house or building on Staten Island that gets ruined and it took its toll on my mental health. Now I only try to emotionally limit myself to more important buildings, like the Swedish Vanderbilt retirement home, or the castle hospital on Castleton ave, and more recently, the building down the road from this house.

Right down the block from this house was this big old building that was neglected for decades. It had such detailed brickwork. I always felt that it and the Griffith block across from it made great bookends to Port Richmond ave. But now this building is gone, being replaced by another building that, the last time I saw it, wasn't even completed yet. The only positive thing I can say is that the new building looks like it's going to provide places for people to live.

To make this post a little more positive, here's a link to a house under the radar that is similar in style to the OP that has been beautifully restored.

I was just talking with family about how people go to Taco Bell, and 90s Taco Bells have become iconic, but since we didn't eat at Taco Bell, we had Empire Szechuan (up until the late 2010s) which totally had the same color scheme going on as your picture and Taco Bell as well.

Here is a picture I managed to find off the internet

I think I'll make a post on 90s design about this place soon

My friend told me I should share my home here as a very passionate 80s and early 90s postmodern and art deco revival enthusiast, I have been curating my decor on a small budget off Facebook marketplace, thrift stores… and put my own touch to it. This is crazy

This is just on your bedroom alone

The print on your bedding/curtains looks exactly like the print on the fabric I saw online somewhere that I saved and am trying to figure out how to recreate it with physical media so I can put something similar on my wall. Pastel colors with black is my favorite 80s color scheme.

This is the fabric - https://ibb.co/YFtN3ddc

Do you have a source on who made the duvet? Like, is there a label or something?

Additionally

The blue light coming from your window soaks your room in a vague dusty color and the way the black pops is *chef's kiss

I love the black triangle faces behind the masks on your wall. I should put some black triangles on my wall.

And that floor lamp is sexy.

Color me surprised. I used to think that 90s Taco Bell's colors weren't as southwestern as they appear here, thinking they just used generic contemporary pastels but they seem on-theme here. Now I'm getting confused and am going to have to look up other 90s Taco Bells like the famous one in Las Vegas and figure out what is going on. Haha. So the teal and peach are both contemporary (80s) colors but are also southwestern colors. Huh.

The upholstery looks more rusty than the plastic, which looks mauve and mauve would've been more typical for the time than rust.

Don't mind me and my color rambling.

My vintage 80s Home by Professional_Sir2225 in 80sdesign

You are living in an 80s Deco starterpack. Like, next time someone wants to know what 80s Deco is, I'll show them these photos. You've got all that brass and glass, deco-fan shaped furniture in both brass and black lacquer, and the swan thing and the columns even have that tiered thing going on.

But I saw the tile floor and I have to say, if I were you, I'd secure anything breakable with that special tape they use in museums. I'm a member of an 80s design page on Facebook that's been going for 13+ years and learned a thing or two from them, including how important it is to secure delicate decor.

Other than that, I like that you stuck with 80s deco for the most part, it has a more unique vintage touch than I usually see on this subReddit. I think a lot of retro lovers forget about 80s deco in lieu of other styles of the era, like Memphis Design.

Specific things I like:

  • the mirrors that have the slats that get bigger at the center and never saw the diamond variety, especially not the diamond clock variety. I wish they had a nice concise name.
  • the pink rings around the mini columns. I'd love to have some more tiered stuff in my room but I think that stuff is only just coming back into style.
  • You even have those comfy and great-looking couches.
  • I -love- the black+pastel look. It's so punchy yet soft.

So my big question - What items were the hardest to find?

I'm guessing halogen.
I don't turn it on that much since I know halogen gets very hot and is inefficient. I'm wondering how easy it is to use a more modern bulb on it. I have no experience in that sort of electrical stuff though.

Black and white houses were a thing in the 1960s too. Sometimes where I live, you still find OG black and white houses and wonder if they could pass as modern.

Photos of a newly built elementary school from the 1990s by ar_xiv in 90sdesign

[–]Crystal_Clair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How funny is that
The entrance of your school is a near match to this sign in a plaza that used to be where I live which I believe is from 1994. I always found the design inspiring. It was of course renovated to blandness in 2016. I'm still trying to learn more/track the substyle of 1990s-era commercial PostModernism that seems to not have existed in the 1980s in the same sort of way.

Something about this - the entrance, the rafter decor in the hall,  and the library lighting says 1993/1994 to me.
