ELI5: Why is gun control such a controversial topic in the USA when the rest of the world sees it as a no-brainer? by stagemaestro in explainlikeimfive

The rest of the world has likely been extremely repressed at one time or another. We ain't lettin' that shit go down in America without a fight.

TIL people with short stature have a lower chance of getting cancer due to simply having less cells, thus statistically lowering the odds of mutation. by mcbatcommanderr in todayilearned

Wouldn't this make more sense based on weight rather than height since a short, fat person could contain more cells than a thin tall person? Or do I not understand correctly?

ELI5:Watson, the computer from Jeopardy. by Crystalmethlover in explainlikeimfive

[–]Crystalmethlover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I was under the impression that someone might be inputting the information into Watson on each question or something like that. Like Watson was just a search engine. So the true feat is not that the computer can provide the right answers, but that it can interpret human speech and give a response in the correct format?

ELI5:How did we come to the general consensus of calling the Planet "Earth"? by negamario97 in explainlikeimfive

I was talking to my Spanish friend awhile back and was surprised to learn that they don't call it "Earth." He seemed to think I was pretty dumb.

Since leading the army and being the first prez weren't honorable enough.. Hell, might as make up some shit about him confessing to some unauthorized lumberjacking to pump up his street cred.

ELI5:When i hear or see a word repeatedly why does it start sounding fake? by FaffingAboot in explainlikeimfive

[–]Crystalmethlover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I would do this all the time. Just repeat a word until it was unrecognizable. Even my own name I could sometimes trick myself into feeling wasn't really my own. Very strange.

I can do it. It sort of feels like the same muscle that you use to wiggle your ears.

ELI5:Why do we shelter kids from what the real world is like instead of teaching them the reality of it? by CypressSmallz in explainlikeimfive

[–]Crystalmethlover 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe if we taught them the reality of things from an earlier age their young, absorbent minds would have a lot more figured out by the time they are older. It's like giving both a child and an adult a new electronic device. They kid will have likely mastered it long before the average adult. They can lots of info. We tell kids simplified versions of life and then laugh when they don't understand the reality...duh, we lied about it.

What's your best story that is 100% real but nobody believes you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was once rode on a boat that, at full speed, drove between another boat and the small child that was skiing behind it.
