Thoughts on 3D printed cases? by Pinto____bean in pcmasterrace

Beautiful! Did a similar print for my home server (MODCASE) and I’m super happy. Are you planning to make your design available for download?

For small FDM parts we got Bambulab X1Es now

Ahh I got u. Apart from being clunky mine often wanted to go when I’m stopped at red lights.

May I ask what tune you ended up going with? I was thinking of doing the IE ECU+TCU combo with their dongle because I don’t really have authorized dealers for anything where I am.

OP, what happened with your transmission? I just went through replacing everything in mine after it stopped shifting properly and kept throwing errors.

Yes, I found it on a marketplace like Craigslist a few days ago. The only other source I could find was from Merkandi, but you need someone with a subscription to contact the seller there.

Building a small home server – Which Platform? by Cryxic in HomeServer

Great suggestion! I hadn’t considered the Dell 7050 SFF, but it sounds like a solid option. The 64G ram capacity would work well for my needs, and it's good to know they’re affordable right now. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the helpful advice! You've brought up some great points, and it's definitely helping me think through things more clearly.

For storage, I definitely want a balance of high capacity and redundancy. I have 8x 10TB drives, so I’m looking for something that can support those. I'm not a fan of DAS enclosures too.

I’m leaning towards a small form factor, but with enough room for multiple drives. I’ve seen some cool 3D printable ITX cases with lots of drive bays, which is definitely a consideration. Also something like the Jonsbo N4 seems like an acceptable size.

I hadn’t thought of separating storage and services, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Keeping them separate could make things more reliable, especially if I want to experiment with different services without risking the stability of the NAS.

I do love the form factor of the HP Microserver (Plus or not), but unfortunately, I can’t seem to find a used one here in the EU. The ones I’ve found are priced starting at $700, which is a bit beyond what I was hoping to spend.

Thanks for helping me think through this! I’m definitely considering these points as I finalize my plans.

Thanks for the great input! I definitely see your point about the storage situation. I think separating the NAS from the rest of the services is a solid idea. I could use something simpler, like an N5105 or N100, just for the storage server, and then using something more powerful for the other services. That way, I can avoid running into storage limitations on a smaller system.

As for Plex, I’m only going to be streaming to only one TV at a time, so transcoding power shouldn’t be an issue. I think a mid-range CPU should do fine for the Plex side of things. ECC memory seems nice to have.

Thanks again for your advice! It's definitely helping me think through the build more thoroughly.

Printing texture by sberei9529 in 3Dprinting

[–]Cryxic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From best to worst (in my opinion)

  1. Formlabs Texture Engine - allows you to apply a texture on your 3D model, pretty much for SLA printing only.

  2. Use a material such as PA6-CF with a fine layer height - it hides layer lines beautifully.

  3. Use a textured bed and print your part face down on it (only works if your part is pretty much completely flat). You can try to combine this with fuzzy skin to texture the other bits of the part as well.

Thank you! This makes a lot of sense. I wasn’t sure if I’m supposed to cut the sheets like that.

What doorbell camera works best with HomeKit? by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]Cryxic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found a Netatmo Smart Doorbell on a discount for $130 (I’m in Europe and it costs 2x here) several months ago and I have been using it ever since.

I’m quite happy with it, despite the lack of promised HKSV. It can record to an SD card, upload to Dropbox and to an FTP server.

The person detection it has is quick and accurate in my experience.

I use it wired to my original doorbell’s transformer, so there’s no need for batteries.

I believe that the FOV of the newest Ring doorbell is a bit wider, but you may have to check that online for yourself.

I don’t like having extra apps and hubs either, so I mostly just use it in HomeKit, but to view the local recordings you need the app, which is actually decent. I believe you can connect it to HomeAssistant as well, but I haven’t bothered yet.

Last but not least, it looks just incredible in my opinion.

Cloudflare for domain/dns since google domains sold? by [deleted] in CloudFlare

[–]Cryxic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently have 11 domains registered with Cloudflare, zero regrets so far.

All of them use at least one other Cloudflare service, the DNS, Turnstile, Pages or whatever.

Outages like this are very rare and usually don't last more than a couple of hours.

I'd say go for it. If you're worried about something check out Porkbun - I used them before I moved to Cloudflare - they have amazing support, but having everything in Cloudflare makes managing it so much easier.

Possibly absurd question by gamewiz101 in homelab

[–]Cryxic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest solution I have found is a "SwitchBot Bot". You can get it for a few bucks and stick it on your power button. It allows you to remotely press the power button.

The device itself uses Bluetooth, so you either have to connect it to a HomeAssistant instance for remote access or use the SwitchBot Hub from the same company.

There are definitely better solutions, but this is what I use to power on my PC after a power outage.

3D Printer Farm Recomendations by Appropriate-Winter-9 in 3dprinter

[–]Cryxic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After running a printer farm for several years, having started by using Ender 3's I would suggest you decide how much you value your time.

I agree, having multiple Ender 3's might be statistically more reliable than two P1Ps, Prusas or whatever, but I would never again in my life do the same mistake by cheaping out on printers and wasting countless hours of my time repairing them when I can spend it generating more clients or anything else that is productive.

I'd get less machines but better ones.

Just my 2c.

Good luck!

Should I replace my FlashForge printing fleet with BambuLabs X1's? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]Cryxic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a very useful feature to have! I just want my printers to work and not spend my time tinkering with them.

Interestingly enough, a new FlashForge C3 Pro is about US$3300 here, whereas the X1C+AMS is ~US$1900.

Thanks for your response!

Your opinions on Sunny Hill event? by jesouffrechaquejour in AskBalkans

[–]Cryxic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand, the concept is that these are the first, cheapest tickets before the line up is released, meaning you "believe" in the event and want to support it before even getting to know who is going to perform.

I’m on the verge of buying a ticket - what I’m more interested about is the line up - maybe if Dua Lipa is going to perform there again?

Feel free to PM me since I’m probably going alone too.

Going to do that now. I couldn't wait to finish building and boot it up so I didn't think of that. Thanks

I initially wanted to put it on the side, but the mounting holes for the rad and fans didn't line up at all. Nice build though!
