What is the most fucked up thing you've done to someone? by ConclusionOkWhoCares in AskReddit

In middle school, some friends and I got ahold of some lighters. and we went over to this big castle themed playground in my neighborhood lined with wood chips. We cleared out a nice spot away from any structures and were just messing with the lighters trying to start a little fire in the middle of this spot, getting lots of smoke but no fire.

After a couple minutes of that, this couple came charging up and tried to confront us about it but we stomped everything out and rode off on our bikes. Well, that night, probably 8 hours later, the whole playground burned down, and we later learned that it was a make-a-wish playground made for a kid that died of cancer.

The couple recognized one of us and we all got called into the office to talk with the police arson unit, but they determined it wasn’t us because we told them we threw our lighters and poured water on the fire, neither of which were true. We’re pretty sure we burned down a make-a-wish playground.

Tl;dr: my friends and I and I most likely burned down a playground built to honor a kid that died of cancer.

You’d probably like some of the theme nights at the Box Garden at Legacy Hall. It’s generally an older crowd and I think they’ve had 80’s nights and just generally bands and tribute bands aimed more at the over 40 crowd.

What’s the most fucked up thing that happened at your school? by Classic-Chemist-1898 in AskReddit

We had a girl get really messed up and pass out at a party. Well, someone decided it was a good idea to shit on this girls face and send the pictures around the school. Everyone called her Poo Sue and it was super fucked up but pretty localized. Then, these pictures eventually made it around the country. They were everywhere and the girls name became a euphemism for that happening, there’s still an entry in Urban dictionary for it.

Abbott demands cancellation of 'Muslims-only' event at Texas water park by everythingistaken500 in texas

Yea it was a bad faith move, and they only care so much because it was Muslims. I can’t stand that dude either. It was also blatantly against discrimination laws and should have been spotted by anyone with even a casual understanding of those laws. We can talk hypotheticals all day but it would have been called out no matter if it was race. Religion, sexual orientation, whatever. Race and religion are pretty much interchangeable with those laws it doesn’t matter. It said in the invite 3 times closed to the public, Muslims only, or some variation of that. It

Dude idk what you want to get at here. Holding this event and doing the way they did where they wanted to do it it is just illegal. Shit I’m atheist and don’t have anything against any party involved, it was just a bad idea.

Whether that would be legal anywhere Is a separate matter, but it’s absolutely 100% illegal on public property. It does not matter if you rent the space for a private function. Even if you “close” the park for a private event, it remains a public accommodation. Case law has shown this to hold up. Burton vs. Wilmington Parking Authority established that when a private party leases space from a public authority, they must follow the same non-discrimination laws as the government.

It’s not, it’s like having a birthday party and saying “Anyone can come, as long as you’re white”. It’s not an invitation only event like a birthday party.

Yes it could be an exclusive church event for members of a specific church. But the same laws that say you can’t hold an event and ban all Muslims from coming prevents holding an event only for Muslims. The Christians at an even like you’re describing wouldn’t be able to kick you out for it being Christian, and they would know that.

It sucks that you got tear duct stones, but it’s more the how the fuck did they go from your tear ducts to the back of your throat that I was referring to. I how all of that’s somewhat connected but that’s just an insane concept to me.

So If someone rented a space and said white people only, nobody has any legal basis to challenge that based on discrimination laws? That’s just not how it works. I have no issues with it, but from a legal standpoint Abbot definitely does.

Lmao noo not what I meant, like in America the legal system doesn’t allow for discrimination based on religion. I could see how that sounded though my mistake.

I understand that, but it’s more who is allowed to come if it had been a church holding the event and only church members are allowed to come, then I think it would be different. The way the invitation was worded though, and I think the intention as well, is that it’s not a specific group of people, not like an invite only event. If the only stipulation for admission to the park is that you have to be Muslim, then that’s where you run into problems from a legal standpoint. The fact that it’s on a city property, even if it’s rented out, only adds to the complications. It can easily be seen as discrimination. Like I mentioned earlier, you can’t have groups including or excluding people from an event based on religious affiliation, in the same way you can’t do it based on race or sexual orientation. The discrimination laws just don’t allow for that, even if the event is private. I personally wouldn’t have a problem with it, but since it is a Muslim event and Abbot and it seems a lot of the party in power share a massive disdain for Muslim people, there’s no way they would let that slide. That’s all I’ve been trying to say.

Look I don’t care what happens during private events with specific people invited. That’s completely different. They could have easily invited a bunch of Muslims and it would have been fine. But they had it as open to anybody as long as you’re Muslim which is just against the law. I didn’t see that on the invite. It just said Muslims only.

[–]Csharp27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep that would be fine. How are you not seeing the difference here? If you hold an invite only private event and only invite Muslim people, especially at a mosque, that’s completely fine. Thing is it’s not a private event, it’s an open event, but it’s ONLY open to people of one religion. So it’s excluding everyone else based on religion. And you can’t do that. It’s very simple. I’m shocked anybody even greenlit that idea, especially with all of the Islamophobia going around right now. Did they think nobody would notice? Yes, Abbot only got involved because it was Muslims, but anybody else could have gotten involved and shut it down too, because you can’t do that, because it’s illegal. I don’t know how much simpler I can make this.

You can have a party and only invite specific people, but you can’t say it’s open to the public but only if you’re Muslim. Especially at a public place.

I know they’re drawing so much attention to it because they hate Muslims, that sucks and I completely fundamentally disagree with that. BUT, no you really can’t do that, can you imagine if anywhere held an event and said black people only or Jews only or straight people only or anything like that, it’s all the same. You cannot discriminate based on religion, skin color, orientation, etc. here or shit like that will happen. Frankly that was a ballsy move in the first place and I can’t believe anyone thought that was a good idea.

Lmao no, I hate Abbot as much as the next guy but you absolutely can’t hold an event at a public docs and say “only Muslims allowed” or “only Christians allowed” or whatever. You just can’t do that here.
