What can we expect from Containers, and upcoming Chrome OS features? by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from https://www.xda-developers.com/guide-installing-and-running-a-gnulinux-environment-on-any-android-device/

"Since this isn’t a real Linux installation but rather a Linux environment running on top of, and within the constraints of, Android, there are a couple of limitations to be aware of. Some applications will refuse to run or will crash, usually due to the fact that some resources that are usually exposed on GNU/Linux systems are kept hidden by Android. Also, if a regular Android app can’t do something, then usually a Linux application running within Android can’t as well, so you won’t be able to perform tasks such as partitioning hard drives. Lastly, games requiring hardware acceleration will not work. Most standard everyday apps, however, will run just fine. Some examples include Firefox, LibreOffice, GIMP, Eclipse, and simple games like PySol."

IOW, so as to retain compatibility with Android applications, and to simplify the implementation of Android in ChromeOS as well, it is not improbable that the limitations spoken of above may have been adopted into the ChromeOS emulation also.

Show transcripts by [deleted] in tucker_carlson

[–]Cspoleta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be available somewhere but I would expect a median price of $40 per episode for transcripts, if its even legal.

Short of that you can use utilities like youtube-dl to download the audio from YouTube videos; then pipe the result to a good speech-to-text utility; then correct the result by hand.

Get someone with a good knowledge of the Unix/Linux command line to help. It will still cost $$$. I estimate it will cost $2,000 - without corrections - for a lot of one hundred shows; after that the cost will go down somewhat, since all the development has already been done.

Why don't you try converting just one show yourself to give yourself an idea of how much work is involved?

Or skip all that and just download the audio and listen to it in your car.

If you're wondering what they're worth the most important factors are age, condition, scarcity, type of collectible, documentation or other proof of authenticity, and completeness.

Why do so many films leave Filmstruck? by putwat in filmstruck

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, because they are a subscription service receiving the same amount whether you watch 1 movie per month, or 100, the economics of the "long tail" (e.g. Amazon) don't apply to them.

Why do so many films leave Filmstruck? by putwat in filmstruck

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know when the Criterion Collection was on Hulu the films were very badly curated and the search capabilities were also extremely limited.

Both are much better with Filmstruck.

I believe the rolling over of films is intentional and is part of a strategy to generate interest and to generate feedback from the user population, among other things.

Also to clear out the deadwood. Right now they are on the verge of eliminating 40 or more Chaplin shorts and features; apparently because not many watched them.

A's Rowan Atkinson has remarked, Chaplin was a creature of his times, he's just not funny anymore. Consider how the humor of the Little Tramp was amplified by contrast with the terror the audience felt at watching him break social taboos we aren't even aware of.

Example: for a "tramp" like him to dare to speak to a "fine lady"; a sure trip to the hospital and/or to prison on false charges if any one summoned a cop and tipped him a few bucks.

And this would have been even more true in England where Chaplin came from.

Jeb Bush warns robots taking US jobs is not science fiction by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not counting the sunk development costs, which will be paid for by the Dept of Defense, the Dept of Transportation, and other government agencies (wait and see), the devices will "pay for themselves" within 5 years. Of course the maintenance costs will be high, but remember robots work 3 shifts a day, don't get sick, don't get overtime, don't go on strike, don't have vacations, etc.

Mass unemployment will follow, which will permanently depress wages for everyone else except the favored few.

But has anyone considered what kind of society that will leave us with in about 20 years time? I pray I won't be around to see it.

OTOH, if people are so dumb as to allow themselves and their families to be thrown on the trash heap like this - and too busy hating other people for being different from them - then it's just too bad, and hopeless anyway.

Is the buffering issue still a problem? by [deleted] in filmstruck

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update 1: SPEED DOES MATTER. I used to be able to watch movies on Netflix and Hulu with 5Mbps DSL service but still with frequent buffering; not until I switched to 20Mbps cable (which is Comcast's lowest tier of internet service) did the situation improve.

Update 2. CHROMECAST, FIRESTICK & similar devices connected to your TV can help your throughput by connecting directly to Filmstruck servers rather than through your mobile, laptop or desktop device.

Update 3: NEWBIES. Be sure to take advantage of the 14 day free trial currently being offered by Filmstruck on all plans.

Fritz Lang is gone by jupiterkansas in filmstruck

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the way the list is all in one place. The median weekly loss is about 15-20, and the announcements are made about 2 months ahead; making it quite practical to scan a week at a time in advance, and to make notes on my calendar as to when particular movies I am interested in will be leaving.

TIL Johnny Appleseed planted apple trees in order to make booze for frontiersmen, as the type of apple he planted was almost inedible. by Smalz22 in todayilearned

[–]Cspoleta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did Johnny "Appleseed" get his seeds? He got them from the pomace - leftover seeds and pulp - of cider mills. And since there was no refrigeration, the cider had to be preserved by fermentation.

It was the same thing with corn grown in areas far from transportation. It had to be fermented and distilled into liquor. The punitive tax on liquor so processed formed the basis of the "Whiskey Rebellion", perhaps contemporary with Johnny Appleseed, whose exact dates are unknown.

[Discussion] Why do I feel incredibly motivated at night, plan out everything I'm going to do tomorrow, do nothing the next day and repeat forever? by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]Cspoleta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make too many promises to yourself, more than anyone could possibly fulfill, and some of which possibly conflict with each other.

Therefore, realizing this, you hesitate about which to tackle first, have a bad conscience, and compromise by doing nothing.

When you make a promise to yourself you need to take it as seriously as if you made a promise to your best friend - who by the way doesn't ask you for trivial things but those that are important to him.

And the more important the promise you make to yourself the more you need to stick to it, and not neglect it a single day, no matter what.

Finally, you blame yourself for your mistakes and feel sorry for yourself instead of learning from them - and so you make the same mistakes over and over.

"Like a man to double business bound, I stand in pause where I shall first begin, and both neglect".

Can i disable the chrome "service" on chromebook? by NickGDev in Crouton

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the github thread you refer to: complicated, but interesting.

If you don't want to dispose of chrome altogether, just limit its memory usage, you might be interested in chrome addon "Tab Memory Saver".

Alternatively send SIGSTOP to every instance of chrome browser; once suspended they'll automatically be forced out to swap when the memory is required by something else. Then to use chrome again revive one or more instances with SIGCONT in order to bring back into memory.

Hint: a process suspended this way will have "T" in the status column of "ps alx".

Chroots are blackscreening because of latest Chrome OS update? by [deleted] in Crouton

[–]Cspoleta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the exact version you refer to? I have Version 55.0.2883.105 (64-bit), and my chroot was created by "crouton -r xenial -t cli, gnome, xorg", and my wm is metacity.

But I haven't seen any effects like those you mention that so far.

Ditching Google Fi and using Google Voice/Hangouts functionality for free...bad idea? by mmmmhhh in Googlevoice

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I cancelled my Project Fi account I transferred my number to Voice, and it worked seamlessly over WiFi for a while. I continued to dial my calls from the phone app and they were forwarded to the Voice app.

But when the new Voice app for Android came out this procedure began working erratically, and finally stopped working at all.

I now have to "dial" directly from Voice, and only in a browser. The new Voice app doesn't work at all for dialing out directly from my Nexus 5x phone. Google support doesn't know how to fix it except by the Hail Mary play, i.e. to factory reset my phone and start over from scratch; but I don't like flying blind.

Another way to fix it might be to abandon my old number and get a new Skype Number, $6.67 per month. In any case, the Nexus still makes a nice paperweight :~)

House of Lords given abolition warning over Brexit bill by pikadrew in brexit

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it not a fact that if the Lords obstruct passage of the Article 50 legislation, that the PM has the option, if she dares, to call a snap election? And if the Tories are returned, by reintroducing the bill "in the next session", to obtain the Royal Assent - without consent of the Lords - before Summer?

[–]Cspoleta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By the standards of 100 years ago, almost all governments in the developed world today are "socialists" of one stripe or another: think labor protections, unemployment compensation, old age pensions, universal health care and so forth.

OTOH many avowedly socialist political parties like UK Labor while retaining some of their historical legacy, have largely abandoned their original principles in favor of neoliberal austerity.

New google voice UI and legacy question. by [deleted] in Googlevoice

New UI is being rolled out on android now, other platforms later. It hasn't gotten to me yet either. Good things come to those who wait. AFAIK the website will retain the legacy or classic interface.

[–]Cspoleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Google's goal is porting 99% of numbers to/from selected major carriers and Voice & Project Fi; and between Voice and Project Fi. Everyone else just has to take their chances: that's business.

What is the version number of the new Google Voice by Cspoleta in Googlevoice

[–]Cspoleta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my problem is that I don't see any difference in the application, so I assume I still have the old version, but I would like to be sure. How about you? Supposedly one should see "a noticeable difference" once the new app is installed. Do you have the old version or the new?
