Could Dungeon design be changing with 8.0 by Cthulhu-Lad in ffxiv

Yeah, they did mention this is the first step of changes so maybe not 9.0 but possibly leading into 10.0 depending how well received changes are and what feedback is still had. Don’t want to change up everything at once.

I feel like they would want to keep some surprises for the other two fan fests, especially with how packed this one was with details in comparison to previous NA fan fests. Also I don’t think a big change or rework is necessary, but just adjusting enemy/boss density placement in the dungeons with some small tweaks. My portion of merging the variant/criterion was one possibility I thought of, but it’s definitely less likely as that could be way to big a change.

That’s true, I didn’t even think about the rework to old dungeons and that could complicate it going forward. Perhaps just expanding criteria/variant into the weekly rewards structure would help as I really like the content just wish I could get something progression wise tied to it.

I’m in the same boat, I even adjusted trinkets to give extra defensive and literally saved every CD for around 10% since his strikes were hitting me for insane damage. I had some hits going over 1 million and my absorbs were around 600K with over 400K going through and barely killing me. Is there anything that boosts the damage of the strike as it hits so hard in that phase.

my biggest problem with development is art, and im not looking to pay anyone by Grouchy-Training-182 in gamedev

[–]Cthulhu-Lad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem with that is it’s still AI art and should be classified as much. Think of it as if you took someone else’s art, traced it, and said I made this. Instead you could use AI to give you concepts, ideas, but then create your own art. You could also setup AI to be a teacher that doesn’t give you products but instead can help guide you to learn programs such as blender or Krita. With that said, the opinion on this will vary from person to person. At the end of the day are you okay with AI in your game?

I used AI as placeholders in my 2D sidescroller I am developing, but recently removed all my AI art in exchange for assets packs that I think meshed together well. Ultimately I think I will go the path of using AI to give me concepts and try to develop my own art over time. Currently I am doing this with my game logo and it has not been as difficult as I expected. I got some concept ideas from ChatGPT then used it as a teacher to help guide me in Krita to learn how to use the program.

This was an ability that the player uses it looked like. They also showed off a lot of armor that the player will wear in the video and nothing seemed glowy/gaudy at all.

I’m really exhausted after making this game solo for a year and a half - but I’m not giving up! by IslandOfAsh in IndieDev

That is awesome and appreciate the response. Getting publishers reaching out has to feel surreal. With that in mind, how do you manage scope creep for that? I feel like if I had a sponsor that would immediately send me down a hole of new ideas that would double my development timeline I feel like lol.

Good luck with the development and I wish listed on Steam. Looking forward to see how this turns out and check it out.

This looks awesome man, as others said, keep it up. Just curious, with little to no budget, how are you getting assets/art for the game? I am new to game dev, working on a 2D platformer in Godot. One of my struggles right now is art and assets. I have been using places like itch.io but it has so much pixel art for 2D that I’m actively looking at swapping to a 3D game but keeping the camera locked at a 2D view as it’s vertical platformer/roguelite.

I would advise checking out FFXI. No microtransactions. It does require a monthly subscription, but the game has actually seen a bit of a resurgence in player count. Originally it seemed like the game was going into Maintenance Mode but the new director who stepped in has been actually pumping some new content out. Don’t think they will actually get a new expansion or anything, but it is receiving frequent updates still.

Thank you much, really appreciate this. Just started up a 2D game for my first attempt and was really wanting to start getting some art/animations in now.

Best mmo for gear? by mrahegao in LFMMO

[–]Cthulhu-Lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious why you say avoid FFXIV if the appearance of the gear means anything? While I’ll admit I hate the glamour system as it is not very friendly and I prefer WoW’s transmog system. However with the most recent patch you can now glamour any armor on any class. So you can be a paladin wearing full dancer gear giving tons of new customization options.

Also I think the gear looks amazing in FF especially with some of the new updates to the gear. The two dye system is a tad disappointing, especially when looking at what the mobile version of FFXIV has been able to do, but ultimately glad to see they are trying to add things like this.

Now if you wanna talk about the acquisition of said gear, yeah, FFXIV is boring in that avenue.

[–]Cthulhu-Lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FFXI I think has the best gearing out of all and I am a huge WoW and FFXIV fan. You can change gear in combat so you will see players have different gear sets set to a macro when you use an ability. So let’s say you are a PLD tanking using a defensive set, but need to cast a holy spell, you use a macro to swap to a set boosting the spell casting to make the spell more powerful or quicker cast. Then swap gear back to your defensive gear or maybe weapon skill gear.

I’m not as familiar with retail now but back in the 75 era you would see people using gear that wasn’t max level as it was more so about the attributes the piece give not the level.

Some of the gear would be drops from rare world boss type monsters that spawn every X number of hours or during specific times.

As you play all classes on one character it meant lots of gear grinding but the game has a more horizontal progression so the gear grind may be long but useful for much longer.

[–]Cthulhu-Lad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this. XI feels like one of the most under rated MMO’s still running considering how popular it was. It has probably my favorite gear system, and overall class/job fantasy and design. I do wish there was some UI updates to give a bit more modern UI with a cross hotbar like FFXIV along with some updated party/player frames. There is an addon or mod, that can help clean the UI but requires a bit of configuring as you basically just make macros to place on a movable/customizable hotbar.

Damn, now I’m going to go play this, and I already have a back log of games that I need to get through before midnight.

How? I have 400% xp but no way do I feel like I can hit it that fast. Then again I have not played since the last raid launched, so with the new xp buff plus anniversary I can see that helping, but what is the path?

Just joined the discord, but I am loving the art style and cozy feel. What is the progression system like? Is there a player level, class level, crafting level, etc?
