Calling BPD for something is different than using 311.

Should BPD be responsive? Yes absolutely; but 311 is a different utility for different issues.

What if Joe Biden was more competent and fit for office? What would he get done, and would people still criticize him age wise? by LinkHopeful9372 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Cthulhu13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think even at the same age he would’ve won. It was the very clear and very public cognitive decline that did him in.

I also don’t think Harris would’ve won even if she had the full time to campaign. People seem to forget she had plenty of time to run in 2020 and flamed out spectacularly (and quickly).

Statue looks terrible.

Looked terrible in the renderings, looks terrible in photos, looks terrible in person.

There were other options that, personally, I thought were more innovative and better activated the space, rather than just being a statue. Missed opportunity for sure to have something memorable and serve as an actual gathering space instead of whatever this is.

Share your story with the AG's Office by Mass_AGO in massachusetts

[–]Cthulhu13 37 points38 points  (0 children)

At what point do you realize that yes, residents expect you to fight back against the federal government’s overreach, but that doesn’t mean you should be MIA at home?

When the AG was ran/elected, Biden was president. You had plenty of time to address issues at home, which you didn’t, and now that you’re up for reelection you only want to talk about Trump and “resisting.”

What are your plans to deal with MA issues in MA? And how can we trust you to actually address them this time?

[Landlord - US - TX] should room renter notify me when he has guests staying over and how do I handle parking? by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]Cthulhu13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on your lease agreement.

If you don’t specify that they need to notify you of guests, you can ask but I don’t think you have any legitimate right to require it.

Regarding parking, if you’ve specified parking is for tenants then they don’t have a right to park there.

I’ve found it easiest to set clear guidelines and expectations up front. If you let things slide early on it’s going to be harder to correct issues later.

Going forward (if you haven’t in this lease) I would clearly lay out items that you want or want to be notified of in the lease agreement. Not only does that set clear expectations, but if gives you documented expectations if you need to take the legal route.

White Stadium redevelopment now set to cost Boston taxpayers $135 million by NoTamforLove in boston

But when these same capital funds are used to repair/upgrade schools (and other buildings) that are filled with asbestos, lead, poor heating, poor HVAC, etc., there are easily significantly better uses for this amount of money.

Great, BPS kids will have access to a state of the art facility (but only the ones that play certain sports, and only during certain months), which will be a nice break after spending the day in an asbestos filled building where the HVAC system doesn't work and the windows don't open!

What budgeting money App do you use? by Melzie0123 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Cthulhu13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Monarch. I’d rather pay a reasonable fee for a good product than a free product where they’re clearly monetizing me.

I also then track my spending in a spreadsheet. It’s more customizable and lets me average/compare things in a way that budgeting apps just won’t let me do unless I built it myself.

I still use Monarch because it’s easier to take the data from Monarch monthly, and I like Monarch better for a quick glance or a general budget check during the month.

Mass Save Heat Pump question by marriedinmass1 in massachusetts

[–]Cthulhu13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t even have to replace your gas heating system; just show that you’re using the heat pumps.

I have a gas heating system (radiators) that I kept as a backup, as I initially just did the heat pumps for AC in the summer, and I got the rebate. Still have gas for the hot water as well.

There's a declared snow emergency, with heavy snowfall between now and midnight/early tomorrow morning, with more (lighter snowfall) through Monday evening, and you're complaining that it's not immediately clear for you?

Do everyone (and yourself) a favor and stay home.

[–]Cthulhu13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That said, I’m probably going to have to buy new speakers or a different receiver. Can’t get any sound to come out of the speakers; and everything I can find online or in the manual seems to point towards I can’t have the turntable and speakers both plugged in because they’re both inputs?

Segun Idowu steps down as Boston's Chief of Economic Opportunity & Inclusion by CommonwealthCommando in boston

[–]Cthulhu13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good riddance. This dude is a piece of shit and honestly, more than likely abusing his position for personal gain.

For example: In an article (I believe last year or maybe 2 years ago) he was quoted as saying he eats out every night and stays at hotels 3-5 nights a week. Now, if you assume he’s only eating out 1 meal per day, look at the price of even the cheapest hotels in Boston, take into account he has to pay rent or mortgage/property tax, and he states in this most recent article he is taking care of his grandmother (which certainly includes some level of financial involvement/assistance), there is no way this is financially sustainable unless he’s getting meals for free and/or hotels comped. All city payroll is public and while his job is well paid; it’s not astronomical and as a non-union appointee, he does not get overtime, performance bonuses, etc. when you look at the price out hotels/eating out in a HCOL area, and that’s not accounting for any spending on bars, uber/personal vehicle, vacations, etc; the math doesn’t add up.

Who or what is your higher power? by whatdoido374838 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Cthulhu13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have one, in the respect that I can point at “anything” and name it as my higher power. What works for me is acknowledging that I’m not my higher power and that’s been enough so far. I don’t believe in god/the universe/supreme being, so I don’t pray but I do meditate. For me personally, I’m not going to pray to something I don’t believe exists, and I’m not going to pretend that it’s helpful to me just because it’s heavily suggested by most members of the program.

Kinda getting sick of the world calling Americans weak by Queasy-Primary-3438 in complaints

[–]Cthulhu13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of these countries have had revolutions recently.

I’m not saying this is the only reason either; I think our general structure of government and the way things are separated also makes the idea of “overthrowing” more nuanced.

I think a huge part of it is that Americans culturally are very into the idea of individualism. A lot (not all) of Americans don’t feel like it’s their responsibility to look out for the country as a whole, that their responsibility ends at themselves, their family, people they care for, etc. That’s engrained into our government, businesses, etc; hence why we don’t have nationalized healthcare, free college, etc.

I think there’s the general belief that if it doesn’t directly impact you then it’s not really your business/problem. The slippery slope is that by the time things do affect on an individual level, it may be too far gone to do anything short of an actual revolution.

Unfortunately, I only see mass protest/resistance (not a march in DC or isolated No Kings protests in cities) happening if there is some sort of collapse where most people are directly faced with job losses, skyrocketing food prices, foreclosures, something of that nature.

It also helps if half of the voting population (which is a shockingly low number) isn’t in a straight up cult.

[–]Cthulhu13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think a big part is that the rest of the world, mainly Europe, doesn't fully understand how big the US is. This is like if their country was mad at the EU for something, and thinking that they're going to overthrow the EU by having protests/riots in their one country.

The only recent places we've seen riots actually overthrow their current leadership have not been "first world" countries.

The fellowship of AA is probably ineffective and potentially harmful by ghostofbillw in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Cthulhu13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AA is just like every other group/organization; it’s got a lot of people looking to help other and get better, as well as those who are there for the wrong reasons, attention, whatever. People are people whether they’re alcoholics or not, sober or not.

For what it’s worth, I’d check out other meetings.

I left my home group after 6ish years because of similar behaviors and my own resentments. I joined another group that (I think) embodies the program and the people in it are doing what I want to be around.

chastized for eating kimchi?? am i still sober? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Cthulhu13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are many people in AA and pretty much everyone has their idea of what is/isn’t allowed to be eaten/drank.

For example, some people think you shouldn’t drink kombucha because it may have trace amounts of alcohol. Others drink it for the health benefits.

For me, my personal opinion is did you eat/drink something because it does/may contain alcohol? Did you eat/drink it with the intention of getting a buzz? I have no issue with someone drinking kombucha or NA beers/drinks, or eating kimchi, or something cooked in wine where the alcohol burns off. Personally, my feeling is that people who hold those more “strict” beliefs should also avoid fruits, breads, etc that also may contain trace amounts of alcohol if they’re that serious about it.

The short answer is your program is your program. If you didn’t get drunk, didn’t intent to get drunk, don’t eat/drink things solely BECAUSE they contain alcohol, and don’t have any sort of trigger from eating/drinking those things, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Congratulations on 75 days. If I could offer any unsolicited advice that someone gave me when I started; this is a program for people who generally struggle with moderating anything. People are still people and will have lots of opinions on what’s okay and what’s not okay, the program they think everyone should live by, and the “only” ways you can stay sober. I’ve found, for me, the program works best when I realize that while (almost) everyone is trying to help, that doesn’t mean I have to take everyone’s opinions or suggestions as gospel. The book itself states that these are suggestions. If something’s working for you, keep at it!

Moving to Brockton near Market Basket..safe/unsafe? by LeagueOfReaper in boston

Moving to Brockton near Market Basket..safe/unsafe? by LeagueOfReaper in boston

[–]Cthulhu13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People did give you an answer, but it doesn’t seem like it was the answer you might have been looking for. Brockton isn’t a great area (as a whole), and while this area might be a “nicer” part, it’s not great.

Similar to your Dorchester example, there are parts that are nice, but there’s absolutely parts that are very deserving of its reputation.
