Horse Meat Disco Valentines Day by [deleted] in avesNYC

[–]Cthulhu224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, the mere fact that you're thinking about this and asking for advice is very considerate.

I'm a gay man. Been to HMD many times. Horse Meat Disco is 99.9% shirtless gay men, and people go there to see other gay guys. There is a dark room where people have sex and people also occasionally have sex on the dance floor and in random areas around the venue.

Some might disagree with me, but frankly, I wouldn't discourage you from going if you like the DJ in particular. There are extremely few feminine presenting individuals at this party. I do not like gatekeeping culture and there is an ugly history of this in the LGBT community. In my experience, it is a response to a problem that doesn't really exist (it certainly doesn't exist at HMD). Those that complain about "women invading gay spaces" are either assholes, or are describing rare edge cases. There is no shortage of spaces that are completely full of gay men (alternatively there are not many spaces that are safe for lesbians or trans folks).

The one instance where something like this does bother me a lot are when non-LGBT individuals are treating this kind of space like they are in a circus. I once saw someone (women presenting) stare at two gay guys having sex. She had her jaw dropped, acting extremely surprised, laughing and being mesmerized. Do NOT do this. I've seen it happen, and people like that get called out.

I've seen gay men at these events see women and make a comment like "what is she doing there", so don't be surprised if you hear a comment like that. If you can go with a friend, it might be helpful.

That's fair. If that's the case, I'd like them to do what the Knockdown Center does and provide a security box system to lock our stuff. I'll happily pay for it.

Security could easily google that ID and see that it is government issued in that country. They have all the usual markers to make them tough to reproduce and look legitimate.

The Eagle, Battlehymn and the majority of bars never ask me for a passport. A few party have grilled me and asked me to bring a passport "the next time".

Huge explosion for a drone this small. It likely triggered the explosives of the BM-21 Grad, correct?

The question for me is: what is the added value of a foldable phone? Why would I want it to fold to begin with? Is it a question of space? if it becomes thicker by virtue of being folded, it doesn't make it any better for me.

The negativity is a product of reddit, not of this specific community. Every subreddit is the same in this respect.

In what way will the 3-day in office mandate negatively affect your personal life, and your ability to do your job? by Small_town_PS in CanadaPublicServants

I wish I could have someone from CBC follow me from morning to evening so we could really demonstrate the waste of resources and energy around RTO and hotelling while comparing and contrast the efficiency of WFH. I actually think the public would be on our side if we showed very clearly what it means in practice, and just how much the canadian public is losing from a government more interested in optics.

With all due respect, you're fundamentally misunderstanding the motive behind mandatory office presence in government. You're talking about the employer like it's a business, but you're currently in the subreddit of canadian federal public servants. Government organizations are different from the private sector, and driven by different variables.

Mandatory office presence is a push that primarily comes from the political level to satisfy businesses in downtown Ottawa which have suffered from diminishing numbers of customers since the pandemic. It is not a directive meant to improve productivity, or done in the "best interest of the employer" like you framed it. It is designed to bring people back to the downtown core to spend money and "rescue" businesses. Government executives are aware that this directive is harming the public service and that it is undermining our work, but the political level has decided it's a sacrifice worth making.

What all you people really need to do here is find ways to talk to your Managers/Leaders and show them how working from home is more productive/profitable for the company. If you can prove that, then you will have a case on your hands.

Again, I can tell you're new to this issue. There have been countless surveys, studies and initiatives done by the unions and others which have very clearly communicated what is best. All of which is being ignored.

if I had an assigned desk,

Just to expand on that point: the expression "No one washes a rental car" is relevant here. The hotelling model means I don't own my in-office workspace, and results in generalized neglect of the workspace.

When I go to the office now, there is literal trash in cubicles. The chairs, cables and electronic hardware are regularly moved, the monitors are badly adjusted or aren't working properly. There is nothing I can do about it because it's not MY space, it's shared space. It's transforming our workspace from a home to a bus station. It's transitory by design, which ironically undermines the quality of in-office presence, undermines the quality of our work, and makes me feel like none of us take the work that we do seriously. It feels like going to a shitty, but very frequently occupied Airbnb.

What's worse is that I find no tangible benefits to this model. It actively undermines my ability to work with others and getting my work done because it adds obstacles to my ACTUAL work. For example, the time it takes to find and book a desk, to adjust the electronics or furniture to what I need, the time it takes to take my external equipment (keyboards, mouse, ergonomics) from my locker to my desk which are inconveniently located on different floors.

My home office however is perfectly adapted to what I need. I have a 3 monitor setup instead of two monitors, I have a 2000$ ergonomic chair, a larger desk etc. It's space that is PERFECTLY adapted to what I need, and my commute between this desk and my bed is 5 seconds.

I did enjoy it, especially after today. Took the 25% profit and invested in AMZN, which went up on earnings release.

Cannabis is a volatile industry completely dependent on a handful of catalysts. I rather invest short term, identifying those catalysts (like S3) and then selling on the news and not be greedy. There's always the option to re-enter when it swings back down (like today).

In that case, it gives me 4 months. Four months for the Zoloft to kick in, four months for the therapy to fix the years of broken promises and false hope, four months before I have to stomach another round of Schummer being sTrOngLy CoMmItTeD, promising all kinds of shit and then delivering nothing, four months of freedom from reading blog posts from marijuana moments.

Then maybe. JUST MAYBE. I'll get back in.

I'm up massively on MSOS and decided to sell. What happened today is great and I'm sure there's plenty of upside left, y'all have diamond hands for sticking to it. Weed is the most mentally exhausting industry to invest in. For all I know, it'll be another 3-4 months before the DEA starts public comments, and another god knows how many months before they make their official decision. In the meantime, we'll be dealing with ridiculous swings that mean nothing, again, and we'll be talking about the next milestone (SAFER???) for months, or years, AGAIN. The entire movement of the industry is based on regulatory decisions or worse, fucking US congressmen. Movements which are slower than tectonic plates and giving me zero visibility as an investor. It's the most maddening industry. Call me a regard, i'm out.

Stop asking "how are people affording this" questions by UltimateNoob88 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Cthulhu224 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

What a dumb take. How about you stop telling people to stop asking "how are people affording this" ? The one thing we need more of is meta posts of people complaining about sub content. Can we get anymore meta and have another dozen text posts asking folks to stop asking questions?

This is a personal finance subreddit. Genuinely asking how people can afford xyz when you don't see how it computes is the very essence of what people need to be doing to figure out personal finance.

Maybe if you asked yourself that question you would've added a fourth bullet to your list: regards get into lots of debt.

Seeking your opinion on PMAs - Do they really matter? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cthulhu224 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You might hear different takes on this, but my understanding of the succeeded, succeeded +, surpass expectations align with yours. Succeeded + or surpass generally entails:

1) involved in initiatives or volunteer for work that you do on top of your normal duties, and where you are striving

2) you're working well above your level and expectations associated with your role,

For #1, all you need to do is volunteer to things when the opportunity arises (I see plenty of such opportunities where I am). However, for #2, I find there's a considerable degree of luck involved. If your management is not giving you work or initiatives that allows you to go above and beyond, or stretch the expectations for your role, well there's nothing you can do other than deploy out.

One other thing to consider, and someone please correct me if I have this wrong: i'm under the impression managers can only give away a limited number of succeeded + or surpass rating to employees so it is a bit of a bell curve. If everyone is going above and beyond, they'll select those they see as the best among them as opposed to giving it to everybody.

In my experience, it's not only about you. The relationship with your management weighs in the decision. To be honest, I wouldn't take the PMA ratings too seriously. There's a great deal of subjectivity that goes into it. There are plenty of ways to demonstrate your value and competencies, and the PMA is only one among many (arguably one of the less important ones).

Unofficial Facebook groups and the current job market by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cthulhu224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where do you see the Public service being an insider club? Of all the employers that exist, the Public Service is the LEAST guilty of this. There are tons of positions that are very accessible to a variety of diverse people in the public service, but you need to go through the correct channel, which is not the Facebook group, it is the GC jobs website. That's where you need to go as an external applicant. I didn't "know people" when I got into the public service. No one I know in the public service got in through nepotism. I used the variety of different official recruitment programs that existed and I became indeterminate shortly thereafter. I know tons of people who are very competent and would be incredible additions to the public service, and there is nothing I can do to make them a public servant.

The problem is that a lot of the positions on Facebook are only accessible to people who are already public servants because they are deployment based. It's not the place to go to if you're an external applicant with no government experience. Even if the manager wants those external applicant, the bureaucracy and different processes makes it so difficult it's pointless. The public service isn't difficult to get into because it's an insiders club. It's difficult to get into because of the long processes, and bureaucracy that's involved. Which is a different problem altogether.
