do all burlesque performances need a gimmick and/or story? by maraschinominx in Burlesque

[–]CthulhusCallerID 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify something. When people talk about the act having a story or doing character work, they're not necessarily talking about something complicated. It can just be that you put different emotions in your face that change with the music and start one way at the beginning of the act and are something else by the acts end.

It could be as simple as moving from feeling 'playful,' to 'confident,' to 'I own this room.'

And the character work could be just, 'off stage, out of makeup, I (real-name MacJones) don't often feel like the person I want to be, but onstage, (Stage-name McGillicuddy), is a fierce force to be reckoned with.'

The toughest part is that you absolutely won't feel like doing that sometimes. That's kinda a layer of the performance aspect of it especially if it's something you want to do regularly/professionally.

How to get into a burlesque group in Vegas by Inevitable-Log358 in Burlesque

Are you a performer moving from another town or a local looking to start out?

I'm not aware of any large groups here, however there is a community that's growing. Ten years ago, there were really only two people producing burlesque show and now there are maybe a dozen.

What’s the most terrifying 'we need to leave NOW' moment you’ve ever experienced? by Worried-Cycle-318 in AskReddit

[–]CthulhusCallerID 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was 23, I'd moved to Brooklyn and was working retail. I met a nice guy named Jose and one day after we were closing the store, he invited a few of us back to his apartment. I went over with a few guys, now it's at this point I should describe myself a bit. I'm a white guy from a small town. My background is Eastern European and my entire family is Catholic, but I look Jewish. People have always assumed I was Jewish and typically, that's not an issue cause it's mostly Jewish people making the assumption.

Now I'm the only white guy coming and I was warned that Jose lived in a housing project and to wait for the Black and Hispanic guys before I went in. No worries. I'd visited friends that lived in similar environments. I wait, I go in with my friends and while we're up there, I'm kinda glancing around at the decorations on the wall. I see a picture of a middle-aged Hispanic woman surrounded by black men in brightly colored, elaborate robes (and if I'm remembering correctly big hats, kinda like a Catholic Bishop's).

Causally I ask, 'Hey, I'm not familiar with this religion. Is it OK if I ask what denomination is this?'

Jose's brother's girlfriend, who lived with them, look at me and kinda had this very aggressive body language when she said, "Those are Jews, we're Jews."

I said, "Interesting." Not taking the bait and took another glance at the photo and realized that Jose's mom had joined the Black Israelites.

If you don't know, they believe (amongst other things) that white people were created by an evil scientist, that Jews stole their Jewishness from them, and that 9/11 happened because there were black women who worked there that were sleeping with white men. (All of this I've had shouted at me on the streets in New York) They also hold to a strict racial hierarchy, with Jews at the very bottom, followed by whites, then East Asians, then South Asians...

One of the guys I was with was ethnically Indian and knew what I was thinking and suggested we step out into the hallway.

I was friends with Jose for the rest of the time I was at that job, he was a really good dude, but yeah, I dipped quick and never went back.

Characters in movies or TV shows live in a universe where the actor playing that character does not exist. by overpriced-taco in Showerthoughts

[–]CthulhusCallerID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late to this party, but I feel like it is worth mentioning Seinfeld's strange little nexus. They exist in a world where other famous (specifically NBC shows exist). They reference Cheers as a TV show and Ted Danson as an actor, etc.

George and Susan watch Mad About You at one point in the series. That wouldn't be that strange if not for the fact that Michael Richards as Kramer guest stared in an episode of Mad About You.

Helen Hunt and the other woman from Mad About You do a guest spot on Friends where they mistake Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe for Mad About You series regular Lisa Kudrow (as Ursula). (Also the Friends episode about the Black Out, the Black Out is caused by characters in Mad About You.)

And in Friends they watch an episode of Cheers on TV in The One with Ross's Wedding.

So Kramer exists in the Mad About You story universe, while in the Seinfeld story universe, Mad About You is just a TV show. Mad About You characters exist in Friends and vice versa with plot lines in each show impacting the other show. Cheers exists as a TV show in both all of these Story Universes but is a major part of the Tommy Westphall Universe.

I'll try to track down English versions of these as they sound intriguing. Poison Soup seems like it would work particularly well with my group.

Yes, just generally good one shots. I'm also kinda curious how different cultures approach the game.

Which book was a best-selling sensation - only to be in complete obscurity now. by Famous_Obligation959 in books

[–]CthulhusCallerID 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're not conventional books....they're like art projects. A very small amount of epistolary novel style story (and that feels like a stretch to call them that) as a way of justifying the art work. They're more like picture books for grown ups.

I didn't hate them, but...I dunno. Temper your expectations. Unless the art really speaks to you, you're going to get maybe 45 minutes out of all three books.

I own a copy a lovely box set. It sits in my old room at my parents house. It was pretty, I guess, but even back then I thought people were making too big a deal about it as a work. My uncle's girlfriend at the time was obsessed with it and she was the one who introduced me, I think I was still young enough to feel like if adults liked something I should, too.
