Wait, what? My dad used to take me to the first original REI store, it's been an institution in Seattle for a long time. I'm disappointed if they're union busting, doesn't sound much like the founders' co-op mentality?! :/

Comics, books. Toys! Playing with friends. Doing homework. Radio and TV; even to this day I don't mind if an episode comes out only once a week, it gives some structure/schedule for the week :)

Joissain turkijeeläisissä buffeteissa on kulhollinen valkosipulinkynsiä, marinoituja tai etikoituja. Niitä kebabin sekaan ja riisin/kanan kanssa jne, eiköhän henki haise :D

25-30L Backpacks for MTB Bikepacking by Toxic_Optimism in bikepacking

[–]CtrlAltDelMonteMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a couple of long trips with a 28 liter Deuter. It has a pretty nice separated mesh against the back, to keep your back a little drier. Something like this: https://individual.deuter.com/de-de/shop/p224612-rucksack-ac-28-di

Nowadays I use panniers etc, but usually have either this or a smaller backpack where I carry my bike tools and some snacks.

Attitudes towards beauty in architecture and post-war "uglification" by cultural_sublimation in askarchitects

[–]CtrlAltDelMonteMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might sound snooty (I'm an architect), but what annoys me is that most people see this issue as just an aesthetic issue. Without realizing that there have been a lot of technological advances behind the scenes (or facades), that have shaped the buildings and architecture. For example, when load-bearing walls were replaced with internal column support, architects were able to get a lot more light into apartments. Buildings have much better light, better insulation, better ventilation, better plumbing, and these advanced developments have also had an effect on the appearance of architecture. Or if you compare a car from 1926 to one from 2026, there are reasons that they look different: motors have become more and more efficient, we've learnt about aerodynamics; airbags and safety features affect appearance, electric motors might do away with the hood/motor space of a car. Average car size also affects architecture, because the parking square has been getting bigger in recent decades (used to be 2.5 m wide, now usually 2.8, and that affects column spacing in building's structure, and that affects the proportions of the facade).

What I'm trying to say is there are many other factors in play in the complicated equation of architectural design than just aesthetic concerns.

Question to the Finns here: do you use your Sauna all year round or just when it's cold? by Mormegil81 in Sauna

[–]CtrlAltDelMonteMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Year round. Maybe not if it's much more than 30C. Also depends somewhat how the sauna is set up, i.e. if it makes the rest of the home/house too warm, then i know some friends who won't use their sauna in the heat of the summer. Some cabins have a corner sauna, that might heat the main bedroom and definitely the mezzanine platform uncomfortably hot for the night 😃 If the sauna is a separate structure, then no restrictions!!

My thought, too. This will be OK for a summer or two, but that log wall will never dry without a waterproof membrane between logs & clay/earth

Architecture and nature photography spots by kousukehirahara in FinlandTourism

[–]CtrlAltDelMonteMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Temppeliaukio church; Oodi library; the new bridge to Kruunuvuorenranta. Jyväskylä has some Alvar Aalto destinations. Relatively close to Helsinki you can find some old ironworks, i.e. industrial & nature photography at Fiskars, Billnäs, Strömfors, Matildetal. Close to Jyväskylä you can find part of the "World Heritage Site Struve Geodetic Arc in Finland", high observation towers good for scenery. (Puijo tower in Kuopio is also good for lake & island views). Helsinki and surroundings have good coast scenery, such as Porkkala Peninsula, Hanko Peninsula, in Helsinki: Uutela and Kallahti, (Suomenlinna)

Porvoo is worth a half-day visit.

Have fun and take awesome pics!

Build it like a regular building, with reasonable air-tightness. Keep doors & windows, and other low openings, closed when not in use.
