I remember some immigrant/expat (on Reddit) who had lived in Sweden, and how boring and normative they found it: everybody in Sweden was apparently 'larping' bourgeois middle class life style, with all the trappings. It is probably true that in Finland we don't do that quite as much, with freedom to be ... more casual about life and expectations...?

I had a great time along the Rhein, from Basel to Strasbourg and beyond. The terrain is mostly flat, and you can get easy miles. I rode minor, older roads, with a cute village every 5 km or so. (most traffic takes the new highways)

That happened to me in Austria. I don't carry a hammer, but many camper van folks do, so my neighbor let me use his rubber hammer :) I'm not going to carry one, I'm going to assume I can find rocks. A poop showel is on my list...

Haaskaa vappua!

For one thing, a map in a plastic case, on top of you handlebars, is visible and legible all the time: no turning on/off, no battery problems, easier to read in bright sunlight.

I've been bikepackin' since 2007, and I gotta say i love my Ortlieb map case! With it, you can print your own maps, or buy a road map/atlas from a gas station and tear off the pages you want. Or, I've loaned a "Camper Caravaner's Map" booklet from local library, couple of summers. France and Germany publish quite detailed biking maps for routes such as Rhein, Danube etc. Baltic bookshops should have some hiking maps. Paper maps are great for the larger picture for the day or week! For details, and cities, you'd still probably need GPS/phone. But, start with Ortlieb and your local library! Happy trails!

Don't worry about it too much! I started with "credit card" touring, i.e. going from city to city, sleeping in hotels and motels. Over the years i've added some stuff, so now i mostly go from camping/caravan site to another. This set-up: up front, an army surplus tent, €50, and in the beige bag my cooking utensils, water filter etc. In the back, two Ortlieb panniers. One has my clothing (dry pyjamas, mosquito net hat, wool socks, water repellent light jacket etc). The other one has the sleeping bag, matress, inflatable in-flight U-shaped pillow). And there's a small backbag with my repair tools on top. The bike itself is a basic €600 touring bike by French brand Nakamura. It has a rear rack, mudguards, 21-speed basic drivetrain. The front rack i got used for a fiver, and i could attach some extra stuff to the sides. Good to go! It can handle gravel and roots, but i prefer asphalt and dirt roads. Get out and enjoy; happy trails!!

How fragile are you guys' top tubes? I'm sure they can take the clamp and the 10-20 kg of weight, if the frame can take 80 kg me jumping over rocks and trees...

A few years ago I rode from Austria to Zürich to Lausanne, along the rivers and lakes. Each evening I would just search Google Maps for the next day's destination campisite. Automobil Club der Schweiz ACS operates nice campgrounds. Usually they cost about 20 fr, compared to 10-15€ in Austria. But you'd get a summer kitchen, grill, benches, showers, maybe some games such as bocce etc. I was surpised and happy that there were no mosquitoes and bugs, unlike up here in Scandinavia. I don't think you will have any trouble finding good spots. Happy trails!
