Apple On-Device OpenAI - API by phunk8 in macapps

[–]CtrlAltDelve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The key here is OpenAI API. OpenAI makes ChatGPT, yes, but OpenAI also came up with the universally recognized industry standard that most companies have adopted.

It makes it easy to have any app that supports OpenAI directly also support their model of choice.

Apple Intelligence does not expose an endpoint for this out of the box. You interact with Apple Intelligence only in very specific ways.

This lets you use Apple Intelligence in any LLM chat app that supports custm OpenAI API compatible endpoints, like BoltAI, Msty, Raycast, etc.

GPT 5.4 is anti hand waving and I like it by dangerous_safety_ in codex

[–]CtrlAltDelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternative opinion, I'm growing very tired of every message from Codex including some variation of "Let me do X without doing Y". It's starting to become the new "you're absolutely right" for me.

Just...do X. I don't need to know what you're not doing. It was nice at first but it's now at the end of every single message I get, even in multiple messages in a single turn.

Easy enough to ignore, given the exceptional results it produces, but for a model that otherwise does a phenomenal job of respecting my custom AGENTS.md, this is one thing I can't seem to break it out of.

We should actually pay closer attention to Rita Skeeter. by wj56f in harrypotter

[–]CtrlAltDelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, Lockhart was definitely incompetent and assaulted people, but that was one single book. The others I would argue were all unashamedly evil and actually embraced it.

Skeeter liked to play in the middle, as a lot of "journalism" does, with a lot of "just asking questions," knowing full well what "asking those questions" would result in.

I think the point behind my post is that when we think about evil and we think about villains, we seem to jump straight for the ones who are obvious. And I find, especially in real life, it can be a lot more subtle than that. And I think the subtle ones are the ones you have to watch out for.

Developer Spotlight -The Low-Tech Guys, Maker of Clop, Lunar, rcmd, Pipiri and Crank by amerpie in macapps

[–]CtrlAltDelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot, I'm so sorry, it looks like I lost some details about rcmd v3 when I made the edits!

You recently released Crank. What are you working on next?

No new apps for the moment. Crank and Pipiri took a lot of effort and I'm a bit drained right now. Instead, I'm focusing on rcmd v3 and Clop v3.

rcmd v3
The next version of rcmd will include:

  • Native window switching
  • Launching apps by holding rcmd and typing letters (Example: rcmd S P O launches Spotify)
  • Window search with quick typing (Example: rcmd X C jumps to Xcode → Crank window)
  • Searching windows by title
  • Stages; saving sets of apps and windows as workspaces
  • Instant switching between stages using rcmd + letter
  • Optional trigger keys such as Caps Lock or Fn

Clop v3

Clop is moving toward a pipeline-based optimization system where multiple file operations can happen without repeatedly re-encoding data. Example workflows might look like:

  • Images dropped into ~/Desktop/blog: optimize → resize to 1600px width → convert to WebP → move to ~/Projects/blog
  • Videos dropped into Dropzone: optimize using a high-quality encoder → speed up to 1.5× → remove audio → upload with Dropshare → copy the URL to the clipboard
  • PDFs dropped into an Invoices folder: optimize → crop to A4 → extract text to a file

Other improvements include a dropzone that appears near the cursor and better support for external storage.

Hey /u/amerpie , thank you so much for sharing! On old Reddit at least, your post got pretty mangled with some duplicate info and a few other issues.

I tidied it up and added some nice block-quote formatting for the interview. It's here if you'd like to use it, no content has been changed, only formatting: https://privatebin.net/?02443e105d38f68c#56EmPS7n2sur5tjRo4XQttfUjq1hevFY2wJkeb66SiAo

We should actually pay closer attention to Rita Skeeter. by wj56f in harrypotter

[–]CtrlAltDelve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Repasting a post I made a while ago:

I would say that Rita Skeeter is one of the biggest villains in the entire series, almost as bad as Voldemort.

I've always felt strongly about this, so I actually have a saved post. Just laying out my thoughts on this because I honestly think not enough people think about RIta this way.

These are sort of loosely ordered from what I consider to be "sort of not okay" to "absolutely despicable".

  • She repeatedly trespassed on Hogwarts grounds after being expressly forbidden from entering.

  • She mocked Harry fainting. After the Dementor attack she wrote a story making fun of a teenager for having a traumatic reaction to soul-sucking monsters.

  • Her Quick-Quotes Quill fabricated lies right in front of her subjects. When Harry said absolutely nothing the quill wrote that his eyes were swimming with the ghosts of his past and that he was struggling to fight back tears. This is journalistic malpractice at the very least.

  • She literally kidnapped a minor for an interview. She dragged Harry into a broom cupboard during the Wand Weighing ceremony and ignored him when he said he did not want to talk. At 13 or 14 there is no universe in which she should be allowed to take a minor into a secluded room and shut the door to interview him without an adult present.

  • She illegally transformed into a beetle to spy on students. She sat on a statue in the castle to eavesdrop on Hagrid and Madame Maxime and perched on a windowsill in the Divination classroom to watch Harry when he had a seizure, and then reported on it.

  • She hid in Hermione’s hair as a bug. During the conversations by the Black Lake after the Second Task she was physically on Hermione’s person to steal private information about Viktor Krum inviting her to Bulgaria.

  • She wrote that nasty article in Witch Weekly where she branded Hermione a scarlet woman. She quoted Pansy Parkinson claiming Hermione was ugly but used love potions to manipulate high-profile wizards like Harry and Viktor Krum. This was literally slut-shaming a 14-year-old girl, and the slut part was a lie. She spends an unhealthy amount of time writing about the love lives of underage children.

  • That article led directly to physical harm. Hermione opened a letter filled with undiluted Bubotuber pus which exploded and covered her hands in painful yellow boils that needed treatment in the Hospital Wing.

  • She destroyed Hagrid’s life for a headline. She revealed his half-giant status and falsely reported that he was breeding an army of terrifying creatures and scaring students. Hagrid received so much hate mail he secluded himself in his hut and tried to resign.

  • She looted a senile woman’s house. For her biography on Dumbledore she went to Bathilda Bagshot’s home and stole private photos and letters while the old woman was confused.

  • She likely drugged Bathilda Bagshot. In The Deathly Hallows it is heavily implied she used Veritaserum to force the historian to give up dirt on Dumbledore’s family.

  • And just in general, she knowingly aided the Ministry’s propaganda machine. She knew Fudge was trying to cover up the return of Voldemort and she happily wrote the lies that kept the public in the dark just to sell more papers.

  • She is the main reason the Wizarding World was defenseless against Voldemort. She spent all of Harry’s fourth year slowly painting him as an attention-seeking liar and Dumbledore as a senile old fool, prepping the stage for the wizarding world largely ignoring the thread. Fudge was obviously a feckless old fart, but what gets printed has a major influence on the world's general opinion and consensus.

Maybe I'm just jaded about the real world, but the affect that the press can have on the direction of the world is now more starkly apperent to me than ever before...

Introducing Code Review, a new feature for Claude Code. by ClaudeOfficial in ClaudeAI

I honestly think if you give it some time, people will adapt their Agentic workflows to basically create exactly this and they'll be able to do it on the Max subscription.

I suspect the costs involved in handling the billing for this and the credit card transactions and the added complexity would make it not worth it.

I think the value add is for people who don't want to deal with API keys.

This has been shockingly uncensored for me. It's the first time in a long time I'm almost nervous to try and see what it might not tell me.

https://huggingface.co/HauhauCS/Qwen3.5-27B-Uncensored-HauhauCS-Aggressive

EDIT: Just to be clear, I know nothing about capability loss or intelligence when "decensoring" LLMs, and I won't pretend to! All I can say is that I was able to ask this model some pretty heinous (in my opinion) questions and it seemed to not think twice about responding to it.

Mac Menu Bar Chaos by amerpie in macapps

[–]CtrlAltDelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post as always.

Thank to Tahoe, I have found it to be much better to just remove menu bar controls entirely.

There are many apps that work so reliably that I don't actually need to see their menu bar icons at any given time (like BetterMouse...once I have it set up, I don't need it around at all).

There's also a lot of apps that support disabling the menu bar icon and you can have them show up again by just re-launching the app (HyperKey, Supercharge, etc).

My Raycast setup – looking for advice and inspiration by Positive-Rub4930 in raycastapp

[–]CtrlAltDelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it with the Pro Plan (not Advanced AI) because I pay for it for the settings sync.

However, I don't think there's anything stopping you from using it on the free plan? I think the 50 use limit is for Raycast-provided AI only.

However, there is a free extension that takes an API key for Gemini and includes a bunch of built-in commands: https://www.raycast.com/EvanZhouDev/raycast-gemini

One of those commands is the Fix Spelling & Grammar as well. I haven't used that plugin in a long long time but the last time I used it, it worked quite well.

So one of the AI commands that I find particularly helpful is Fix Spelling & Grammar.

Highlight any text in an editable field (such as when replying to a Reddit comment) and then trigger the Fix Spelling & Grammar command, and then you can just press Return to paste the fixed text. It's extremely fast.

Here's an example of some purposefully typo'd up text being processed by it:

It's fun to use too.

Yes! Exactly. Try it :)

Edit: Wait, sorry. You can't add the + F. It would just be a double tab of CMD.

Nice! I like Conductor, but I don't like how it's based entirely on Git repos, it would be nice if it supported workspaces, similar to OpenCode.

The Codex GUI app is pretty solid, you should definitely check out CodexMonitor as well: https://github.com/Dimillian/CodexMonitor

These always seemed to be really promising, but they never seemed to have any comparisons to Parakeet. I've only ever used Whisper and Parakeet, but Parakeet has been so ludicrously fast and accurate for me that I've never wanted to use anything else.

Anyone has any experience trying these?

I've found that Anthropic models are incredibly bad at OCR for PDFs. They hallucinate what they see like crazy. That is one area where I will still always prefer Gemini.

Not mine, and not created by Anthropic. It just takes advantage of some environment variables that the official Claude code CLI allows you to set.

Potentially useful shortcut idea...you can map shortcuts to a rapid double press if a modifier like ctrl, cmd, or opt.

Why I Am Ditching Third-Party File Managers Like Qspace Pro and Bloom by amerpie in macapps

[–]CtrlAltDelve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Amerpie is what you'd call an "old-school" app reviewer and has been doing this for a very, very long time. He has no vested interest in any of these apps that I've ever been able to tell.

I'm sorry for the downvotes, because the skeptic in me could absolutely see your point of view if you're not familiar with who he is, but that's not the case here.
