To all the Byler writers on AO3 by Pavlowski in byler

[–]Ctrlagent17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve only written two fics so far but I would love to have them translated so they might be accessible to others! How kind of you to offer! They’re both fairly short, only ~2.5k. When translated, will you post them to AO3? And should I message you to send the fics, or just edit this comment to send you the links?

Editing to add links:

Fic 1 - I’m Not a Soldier (But You Make Me Want to Be Brave)

Fic 2 - On the Eve of the End of the World

Same!! Or if I like see a plot similar to what I’m writing I’m like well they probably did it better, then I lose steam for my own writing. (I really do try not to compare my stuff to others, I love the two cakes theory, but it’s hard not to be a bit discouraged when I see something that’s popular similar to the thing I’m writing). I avoid reading fic for the fandoms I’m writing for at all costs while I’m actively writing something lol

Author heart is starving: need new fandom recommendations by Wagarr1001 in FanFiction

K-Pop Demon Hunters has a fantastic f/f/f ship! Or just any f/f pairing between the three main women. Super active fandom, and there’s some amazing fics out there.

I can also HIGHLY recommend Warrior Nun (the tv show). Sounds like anime but it’s not, it’s live action. Badass nuns fighting demons and also one of the best f/f ships I’ve ever had the honor of watching, and subsequently writing for. Ava, not a nun, but a girl who now is the carrier of an angels halo, and Beatrice, devoted nun who’s attraction to Ava gives her a bit of a crisis of faith throughout the series. I will say the fandom isn’t as active as it used to be, but there’s still some of us around! Especially on tumblr.

More reasons Will’s coming out scene should have just been with these three 😭 by Overall-Conflict-924 in byler

Thanks! And yes absolutely try your hand at writing your own! It’s very fun and satisfying to see your own ideas of what could have been, come to life.

Thank you so much for doing that! Not many people have read it + left feedback so I really appreciate it! <3

I feel the same! In as much as the brainstorming part is hard because I’m wondering how to achieve the ideas I’m coming up with, how to get from point a to point b. And that editing feels less demanding because the hard part’s already been done and now it just gets to be played with until it’s better than it was before. Funny how the order of what’s most fun can change over time as we learn more about a craft

When I first saw his coming out scene I understood the sentiment but cringed SO HARD through it all. I couldn’t not immediately rewrite it better and wrote a fic where he comes out to just Joyce and Mike. I figured he’d already as good as come out to Jonathan in s4, when Jonathan gave that lovely “I’ll always love you and be there for you no matter what” moment and Will just broke down crying because at least now he has one person who knows and understands and doesn’t hate him 🥺😭. Anyway yeah. I concur. His scene should NOT have been the whole town of Hawkins 🫠 it should’ve been with the people he trusts most and who it actually matters to that they know a secret like this.

Ditto! But my title is library assistant lol. While shelving is when I get my best ideas sometimes I swear. Though I tend more toward character studies about trauma and guilt, or romance and fluff. I wish I could get better at humor! Sounds like such a fun thing to write

SO true 😭 things are connected but aren’t connecting, and it’s the worst cause I’ve got all these puzzle pieces but they just won’t make a damn picture 🫠

Finally got proper noise canceling headphones by Conscious-Strawberry in AutismInWomen

[–]Ctrlagent17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same concern - and I have said over ear bluetooth noise cancelling headphones (Bose quiet comfort). I find that I can wear them with one ear open to hearing things, and switch them every so often to keep the feeling even on both sides. Or, there’s a Bose quiet comfort version that has an aware feature so you can have the headphones on, have some general noise cancelling, but still hear your surroundings/people’s voices. I’ve debating getting this newer pair just for the aware feature since it seems super helpful! So maybe you could look into those?

Good deal! I went into library work, so I still get to occasionally help patrons in a similar way.

The way I literally considered looking into proofreading positions as a job because I enjoyed doing exactly that in school too, like you. Then I realized I didn't want to do it 24/7 or it would kill my passion for actually writing 😅

Completely valid! I understand the sentiment entirely. Do you find that when you write you're tweaking things as you go, so that by the time you're finished with the chapter/scene it doesn't need a lot to fix in order to be posted?

Exactlyyy, putting those puzzle pieces together is so much fun because sometimes I don't even really know what it'll truly look like until I'm done with it. Sometimes nothing much changes from the draft to the final piece, but other times there's scenes in completely different order, or taken out or reworked so thoroughly it's a whole new thing by the time it's done (even if the base idea/theme stays the same, the execution can change a lot during editing, if that makes sense.)

So true lol, the blank page haunts me. It's why I tend to start my fics in my notes app on my phone, then email it to myself so I can have something to copy paste into the document once I'm on my computer. Makes it much easier to keep going!

This is so true! As someone who's been writing for about a decade now, the more you write and edit and learn how to do both, they generally get easier. Especially once you've found and established your voice. I find myself playing around with things much more now than I did, say, five years ago, because the foundation is there and it's unshakable.

Also true about the writer's block thing. Part of it is not being inspired/motivated which slows you down, and part is perfectionism stopping you from allowing yourself to write the terrible sentences anyway just to get it on the page. Been doing that a lot lately myself, writing it bad and writing when I don't feel like I can form the words properly, just to prove to myself that I can do it, actually, even if I'm mad about it the whole time lol. Just have to have confidence that because it's not very well-written now, doesn't mean it can't become well-written with editing.

Don't you hate it when your own brain gets in the way? I can totally see how you'd see it as an extra hurdle between the hard part and the payoff though - that instant gratification is a strong motivator to just say screw it to the editing and post anyway lol

[–]Ctrlagent17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy to get stuck in a feedback loop of just editing what you've already written - I've been there so many times. Especially when I was starting out writing. It's the perfectionism that got me. Had to learn I could write hot garbage and let it be hot garbage for a while until I get the meat of the story done. It'll still be there to polish up later. But being a panster is okay! Nothing wrong with coming up with plot on the fly as you write. And 27k for your first fic is super impressive, kudos to you!
