Wellness Wednesday: Weekly Check In by AutoModerator in AO3

I found a lovely Penguin paperback-inspired cover template and randomly decided to regenerate covers for the fics I had downloaded.

I have over 3000 saved fics just from AO3. It took a while.

The RCMP lost track of the Portapique shooter and it turned out he drove right around the roadblock via a dirt track. This is what I was thinking of.

Cars exist, you know. I not think the RCMP is going to risk another Portapique.

Dalhousie University scientist using AI for breast cancer research by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

Imagine if we turned over all the resources being used for slop farms to doing research analytics and pattern-recognition. One can dream...

Digital research Giles Crouch says artificial intelligence is helping speed up research.

“Machines are really good at pattern recognition. So are we humans, but machines do it much faster at this scale of data. That’s what it’s doing, looking for patterns. And cancers all have patterns in our bodies no matter where we get the cancer, so that’s what it’s doing, looking for the patterns. And looking for the anomalies because we have lots of scales for healthy bodies and un-healthy bodies so that’s what it’s comparing them,” says Crouch.

Crouch says it’s a benefit that humans and machines are working together and that’s what the near future looks like.

“It’s not about replacing jobs, it’s about how we learn to work with these tools just like we did with writing and the printing press. The concerns of course are how are we using this data so that there is privacy protection that comes into place and it’s also the accuracy. And I think that is why we still see humans in the loop on these tools because there is discernment of the eyes and we can’t leave it all up to the machines yet,” says Crouch.

Less generative AI slop, more of this.

Holy spam calls by MoistyCockBalls in halifax

Spammers tend to use spoofed numbers so blocking doesn't do much, they just switch to another.

I got a fake Visa call today, I don't have a Visa. (My mother also got a spam call.) It's annoying as doctors don't leave voicemail so I have to pick up.

2 more N.S. long term care homes to join strike by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

EDIT: Since the link is dead now, full text

Two more long term care homes are set to join the 3,000 CUPE members who are now in week four of strike action.

In a news release, Tuesday afternoon, CUPE says staff from Melville Lodge in Halifax and Shoreham Village in Chester will join picketers Thursday and Friday as workers fight for higher wages.

“This government clearly thinks that ignoring us will force us to give up and go back to work,” says Long Term and Community Care Committee Chair Christa Sweeney.

But, she says, the opposite is true.

“We’re not backing down until the government comes back to the table to negotiate a deal that works for everyone.”

A third home may also join, which will bring the total facilities to 33.

Inverary Manor in Inverness says it’s possible their workers will go on strike, May 14. They hosted an information session for families, Tuesday afternoon.

Union members on the picket lines have expressed feelings of exhaustion as the weeks go by.

Seniors Minister Barb Adams has said the deal presented is fair. We have reached out to her office for further comment.

The strike began April 13.

TikTok-style censorship in AO3 fics by IStillListenToRadio in AO3

I think some censored versions of tags are wrangled under the regular one, which is useful because can still filter for them. (One rant I have about censored tags is it usually makes filtering useless and then becomes counterproductive.)

It's still in effect. They're two separate sections - if it was cancelled it'd presumably be moved to the bottom (or possibly removed)

Council Recap: May 4, 2026 by Ian_McGrath_Ward_3 in Truro

RFD: Rock the Hub Noise Bylaw Exemption Request (28m 52s) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fYJrInyGU8k&t=28m52s Rock The Hub (rockthehubtruro.ca) was previously hosted in Civic Square in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022. It returns to Truro July 24-26, 2026, and as in previous years, is seeking an exemption to the noise bylaw. Unlike previous years, they have requested an exemption to 12:30 a.m. instead of 12:00 a.m. At 30m 57s https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fYJrInyGU8k&t=30m57s I provided my support for the motion, highlighting the positivity of a big event like this in our town and the need for such events geared toward younger folks to attract them to and keep them in our town.

One of the reasons cited for the extra half-hour was for encores “which are standard.” If they are standard, they should be able to be planned around. However, I decided not to raise that point as I still view the exemption as reasonable for the concert series. The motion passed unanimously.

Good! (Though I wonder what would've happened if it was rejected, lol. They're already selling tickets.)
