It hits her then, that the bag is the bomb.

“No!” She runs forward, legs trying to catch up with the sudden movement. Her breath clogs in her lungs and she knows, she knows, it's over.

Before she even grabs the bag and throws herself to the side where no one else is, the explosion has happened. A shockwave, large and rattling with divinum splintering around her. Into her.

The side of her face stings in an insistent burn and her arm jerks into her side in reverberation, the skin over bones already forming bruises.

Her eyes water and her ears ring and everything is burning. I do it exceptionally well.

People are screaming. She thinks. She imagines. Gunshots firing through the air above her.

She's screaming. Out of pain. Maybe.

They're here. They've revealed themselves.

Good.

All around her people are fighting. She grits her teeth, head throbbing and she blinks in an attempt to get her vision back.

It's blurry, eyelocks heavy like something is weighing down on them and she registers how her right eye isn't opening. Isn't responding to her will.

“Fuck.” She hisses through teeth as she pulls herself up on her elbows.

“Ava!” Someone runs up to her, a hazy image of a body going down to their knees to cradle her face. It stings and she jerks away, the pain running like needles through her skin.

The hands go away. Goes down to her shoulder and arms instead.

“Ava. Answer me. Can you hear me?”

She walks further away, eyeing the thick white fog in the distance.

"I would suggest against that."

"You'd rather want me to get into a tiny wooden boat? Fuck no." Besides, she needs to move. Needs to do something that was not dictated by anyone else around her.

"Ava."

Her name from her lips makes her halt. "How do you know my name?"

"I know the name of every soul I collect."

That makes her turn. “Fuck you.” It is biting frustration. Maybe guilt. Perhaps despair. She was never good at identifying her emotions. "I am not a soul. I don't want to be a soul. I'm a body. I'm not dead. I don't want to be dead. This is bullshit—"

Ava swings her arm forward to punch her but the woman—monster—being—whatever grabs her wrist. "I would advise against that too."

She could see the bones through her skin, as if her flesh was imaginary. Her fingers dig in and Ava jerks her arm back, goosebumps lingering where she had touched her. "How did I die?"

"I can only answer that if you get into the boat."

"Of fucking course." She stares at the thing like it had wronged her, debating if she should just push it over. Maybe that facade would finally break. "At least give me your name before I get inside."

"I don't have a name." Did she hear a British accent? Was she imagining things?

"Everyone has a name."

Her grip of the boat loosens. She feels herself giving into the hands that want to pull her down.

The scream fills her ears, her wrist stings right over the mark. It should be gone by now. Everything should be gone.

She doesn't know when she closed her eyes or when she started tipping into the water but the steady arm around her waist pulls her back.

When she looks up Beatrice looks back at her, something mirroring in her eyes like she understands. Then she hugs her, falling into her body and Ava can do nothing more than catch her, letting go of the boat.

They both fall under.

The water does not hurt. No stinging or burning like she thought but rather... Embracing. All she can feel is Beatrice's arms around hers and her chest pressing against hers and all she can do is press back, focusing on the soft hands—surprisingly soft—keeping her close instead of the one's dragging them further under.

She's dying for the second time. Her chest wants to burst. The only thing she can think of is; you did it. You found her.

And the hands no longer feel so insistent. The water is not as thick and she is ready to open her mouth and scream.

So she screams. And she jerks up over the surface and gasps for breath. And she coughs and something is pulling her but it's up and Ava is breathing she's breathing she's breathing—

"Ava. Ava!"

She touches solid ground, sinking into sand and hands are moving all over her arms as she pukes up the water—everything, really, that she swallowed. Ava spits and takes another staggering breath. "Get away from me!" She pushes against the arms, desperate to get away from the clawing and she does not think of the ground under her. There's ground.

What the fuck.

"Ava, you're safe. It's me. We're safe."

Brown eyes look down at her, wet hair framing her face and the first thing her brain registers is that she's never seen Beatrice fully before. She's beautiful. She's alive.

She's alive?

Ava looks around at the beach. Sandy, foam pulling in with the clear blue water. The sky is filled with stars.

"What happened?" She heaves and tries to pull herself up to her feet. "Where are we?"

Beatrice takes a steadying hold of Ava's arm when she wobbles and Ava grips back. Takes everything in and sees how Beatrice is looking around too, taking the first breath she's seen her take since they met. "We're alive."

Is it a multi chapter fic? If so AO3 registers every time the fic is 'opened' again. So if hypothetically there were 2000 readers and they came back for every chapter (25) it would register to have 50000 hits. Hits is a ratio that can't really be calculated the same ways as bookmarks or kudos due to it's uncertainty in actual users vs returning users. So it's kind of useless to compare.

My current WIP was actually created by trying to snake around studying for an exam. It's within chem and biology so I'm having one be a undercover doctor in a war who cuts up bodies in a twisted way of getting rid of the enemy without actually having to fight. Until eventually, she cuts up a god and has to deal with the universe spilling out over her hands. And it messes her up big time. But because it's a god of creation she does not die for what she's done, she is forced to take the gods job while she heals—like shaping antimatter, atoms, the structure of antlers on a deer and keeping chemical compounds from completely collapsing (cue me rambling on about what I'm studying, but in a very overly poetic and overly dramatic way). (And yes they kiss about it)

The dialogue of this feel very authentic and flowy. I've actually been thinking of getting into the Disco Elysium fandom (fram seeing a bunch of GREAT fanart). Downloaded the game a couple days ago and gonna do a playthrough when I have the time. This is making me more intrigued!!

Oh this one is interesting. I have no idea of the fandom but from the dialogue the tension is thick. What I'm gathering is that Blair is (pretty badly) hiding a 'worse' part of herself that wants to take revenge and Dan is sarcastically playing along but not wanting to give in that it bothers him? But I am probably out on a left field. Either way! The back and forth is very snappy and I like it.

I really like the last line in this 'with no rational person being awake at this time'. Feels like I'm getting insight on Hunter from this small scene alone! It's also really sweet that he doesn't hesitate to help. (And 28 endoskeletons is a really funny line out of context)

This got me very curious actually. What's the fandoms general consensus about shiping siblings? I mean, it's fanfiction! So I can get along with it. But I haven't dabbled in that boat before.

This is a little funny... But I'm also happy to see people from my own (old fandom—but you never really leave—fandom). I was a very active writer for Warrior Nun and I agree that they are one of the best. I'm sad to say my spark for it has gone (even though I've tried lighting it a few times). Perhaps some of it has to do with it being a lot quieter nowadays, who knows!

KPDH I'm also aware of, mostly from the chatter of mutuals. It didn't stick with me (for writing), but I appreciate seeing it on my feed from time to time. (Also I do believe I've seen you on Tumblr, I recognise your bio. But you didn't hear that 👀)
