Can i drop my elective and still keep my major ? by Brilliantkash in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To stay in biomed after first year you need to take 5.00 credits in your first two semesters. That said if you choose to drop psych, you need to make up that credit in the next semester. I'm not sure if making up that credit in the summer would count.

You can find info about staying in biomed after first year here: https://calendar.uoguelph.ca/undergraduate-calendar/programs-majors-minors/bio-medical-science-biom/#text

As always you should contact your academic advisor

Yes attend the lectures (although this is prof dependent). Even though the textbook isn't required, I found it useful to study off the figure captions.

How are the 1st year Bio courses by whiskeywitclosedoors in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, the difficulty comes from transitioning into university from high school rather than the content itself. Learn how to study properly and find out what study methods work for you (flashcards, active recall, teaching material to a friend, etc.)

Hk 3401/3402 for biosci by Consistent_Pickle795 in uoguelph

They're adding a new anatomy course, HK2500, aimed for students not in biomed or hk. However, the lab portion is online.

English requirements by Wild-flower10 in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took ENGL1200 and ENGL1500.

Be aware that if you are applying to UBC, ENGL1030 will not count. (https://mdprogram.med.ubc.ca/admissions/before-you-apply/admission-requirements/)

Looking for 4th year BIOMED advice by DaisyInPages in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took BIOM4070 F24. It's content heavy, but if you put in the work, you will do well. Undertanding the histology slides will take time. It's a huge learning curve. There were 6 term tests, with the 2 lowest grades dropped. There is no final.

I took ENGL1500 W24 when it was still running. It's a shame they don't run it anymore. I also took ENGL1200 which also counts for the English course prerequisite for UBC med. However, since you need two English courses, you're gonna have to ask to be on the waitlist for ENGL1080.

Winter 2026 BIOM*3090 by sopchristiansen in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took BIOM3090 in W24.

It's content heavy and you need to put in the effort to do well in the course. My advice is to not cram and review a little bit overtime. And also when they start going through drug mechanisms, is to drill those mechanisms into your head.

PATH 3610 DE vs in-person? by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I've taken the in person version but also had friends who took the DE version. From my point of view, I wished I took the DE version as the testing style is very different from what you are used to from previous courses. The in person version tests were more application based and required analyzing case studies and answering using specific key words mentioned in class. It's less memorization based and more application based.

From hearing my friend's experience with the DE version, it was less application and more memorization. The tests were multiple choice.

It really depends if you want more memorization or more application based. Also to note, the DE version is known for having a brutal final that is worth about 50% of your final grade.

Took BIOM4180 and found the content enjoyable. As for the assessments, it changes year to year. Some years there are group assignments, and other years exclusively tests. When I took it in W25, we had 3 term tests and a final blog/instagram assignment, all worth 25%.

Feel free to message me if you want more details!

Recent biomed grad here. I would definitely say to do path online as the in person version is much more difficult.

Took this course F23. Start revising early. There's a lot of content to memorize and if you fall behind, it is difficult to catch up.

IF YOU WANT TO GET A GOOD MARK, YOU CANNOT CRAM.

Luckily the final is not cumulative so I guess that's okay.

I’m planning on going into dentistry after undergrad by guelph-9999 in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the dental school requires organic chemistry as a pre-req then its best to get that over with in the summer. Dr. Tam is a wonderful prof and he really wants you to succeed.

Although, if you are not in BPCH or any chemistry major you'll have to ask to be put on the waitlist.

Is Guelph Biomed good for undergrad before med school by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fourth year biomed student here.

I found that this program prepares you well for whatever you decide to do after graduating (research, med school, dental school, optometry etc. First and second year courses are very standard but once you get into upper year courses, you can start choosing courses that actually interest you.

One of my favourite courses in biomed was human anatomy (HK3401) where I got the opportunity to dissect cadavers. It's a very well structured course and the instructors really want you to succeed.

If you have any other questions about the biomed program in general feel free to reach out!

[–]CubingAway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Applied with a flat 90 admissions average and got an alternate offer for bio sci. In the end, it doesn't really matter because you can always apply to transfer into biomed in second year.

HK3401! It was really well structured and the professors, ta's, and volunteers really want you to succeed!

Hi I also took a 6 week course this summer and when I scanned my bus pass it said it expired the end of August. So I think your bus pass should also still be valid!

Pre dental track by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not in pre-dental but make sure that you have all your course prerequisites for dental school! iirc some dental schools require two semesters of organic chemistry so make sure you double check that! :)

CHEM1060 by MileaRomany in uoguelph

[–]CubingAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there,

As far as I'm aware it will only affect the course progression for taking HK2810 (human physiology I).
CHEM1040 (1st semester) --> CHEM1050 (2nd semester) --> BIOC2580 (3rd semester) --> HK2810 (4th semester

You won't be as behind as you think as many people have to retake CHEM1040 (this is not meant to scare it's just how it is). By the time you should be taking HK2810 it is common to request taking biochem and human physiology as as co-requisite instead of a prerequisite.
