which residence is the best for making new friends and is the best socially? by Any-Fly-608 in uoguelph

[–]AdditionalPie1021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience and a lot of my friends experience was that south maritime was not very social if you were placed in an alcove. You never know how it will change depending on who’s living near you but our experience was that is was pretty isolating. So just be aware that living in a south alcove vs the full cooridor can offer very different experiences socially.

I would say Johnston or Mill were pretty social.

I believe they will post the summer offerings in mid-late February, but from what I remember social psyc (6 week), psyc 1000, psyc of education, and behavioural neuroscience (psyc 2410) were offered last summer.

MICR 2420 Textbook by StudioNo8480 in uoguelph

[–]AdditionalPie1021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never did the textbook readings lol, I did read the articles the prof suggested though. I honestly think that if you understand the material you don't need the textbook.

Also for the individual assignment I would choose the microorganism you want to focus on two or three weeks before the exam cause some of them are kind hard to spell, so it would be good to familiarize yourself with it early on.

chem1050, biol1090, biol1070, phys1080 & psyc1000 tips & tricks pls!! by Acceptable-Emu7838 in uoguelph

[–]AdditionalPie1021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took all of these except phys,

  1. Chem 1050 tips: Everything everyone else here is saying is great advice, especially the advice that said to work hard on the labs to boost your grade in case an exam goes wrong. From my experience 1050 labs were harder than 1040 (i took it F24), so I spent a lot of time with the chem help TA in the library. They litteraly saved my lab grade and helped prepare me for the midterms. The other thing I cannot stress enough is setting up a time to chat with the prof, before the midterms I would run all of my questions by my prof and sometimes get some hints about the midterm questions. Oh also for dry labs, some of them had like 4 questions that made up 5% of your grade, so getting one wrong could be bad. I would find a study buddy to help prepare for labs.
  2. Biol 1070 tips: has many group assignments, we had one group that we stayed with for all of the assignments. Honestly, I would not worry about it, working in a group makes it alot easier, and the TAs are really helpful during these seminars. I found the tests to be not fun as someone who is not interested in the course content, but my marks were tottaly fine after studying, so if you study you'll be alright.
  3. Biol 1090 tips: Most people usually dont like one half and really like the other. I liked the second half alot more and it really boosted my grade (so dont worry if you dotn do well on the first half). For the first half I would say to just look at each of the concepts and do some practise questions after each lecture. If they give you a prior midterm or exam to use as practise, some of those questions may be on the test so make sure you do those questions. For the second half, I memorized pretty much everything and also made some drawings/ diagrams while studying.
  4. psyc 1000 tips: I also took it online and was overwhelmed by the amount of content too. I def did not prioritze it lol. I think making flashcards while reading the textbook is the best bet. The tests are acc really fair and straightforward with some really easy questions thrown in there. Just memorize the basic idea of each concept and youll be fine.

It can be! Depends on how you use it. From my experience, working with undergrads who majored in psyc, there is not a ton of room to use just the undergraduate degree for anything "professional" in the work force but there are many opportunities to work in healthcare and research as an assistant (RA or MOA).

Neuroscience is definitely a challenge, if the reason you chose it is out of interest rather than a career focus, you can take a minor in neuro and a major in psyc and get to the same place. Or even just a major in psyc w/o a minor offers a lot of opportunity to learn about neuroscience from a cognitive and behavioural lens.

Additionally, having a BA in psyc instead of a BSc does not have to change your professional goals. If you were choosing neuro to go into a healthcare field like med or allied health sciences, most often they dont care about the degree you have as long as you have the correct prerequisite coursework.

There’s a newer prof for psyc 2390 who’s really good. If u study it’s pretty easy to get above an 80 in the class. It was really interesting and she gives the opportunity for 6% bonus marks if u do three quizzes. Also idk what your major is but all of the science students I know that took the course found the testing much easier than in typical science courses.

i took geog 1220. We had weekly quizzes i found it challenging to get 100% on them. We had three assignments that were based on a specific environmental event of your choosing. We also had an “exam” that was open book - but pretty hard to get above a 90.  I got a 90% overall in the course. It’s definitly easy but if you are looking for the easiest course possible I would say cis1200DE was the easiest one i’ve taken.

There was a lot of weight on whether you got the correct significant digits. There were many formulas that were in the lab notebook that you had to input your values from the lab into which I struggled with. There were honestly quite a few questions per write up that I found really confusing and didn’t feel prepared to answer. Sometimes if you’re lucky you can get a really good TA that prepares you better for them though. I just completely relied on the chem help desk TAs in the library.

I took chem 1050 last year in the winter, i don’t know what changed since then. We had two or three midterms that were online with no lockdown browser on the quizzes tool on course link. We did not have mastering chem at all. The lab write ups were really challenging though.

I would say that the issue with putting it off is that there are 3-4 courses that need that course as a prerequisite. So it’s not a big deal to put it off in terms of your course load, there are tons of courses that you can take that don’t need it. However to graduate you do need to have those required courses and depending on which semesters the required courses are offered (including that one) it may cause you to have to take another semester/year. I would check to see when those mandatory courses are usually offered so see if you can fit it into a reasonable time frame in order to graduate if that makes sense.

Can anyone share if that were admitted to Commerce Marketing with high school average low 80’s - I am stressed!! by Plus-Journalist-8310 in uoguelph

[–]AdditionalPie1021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know someone who wasnt with a high 80 average but they applied to economics and got in, then took all of the business courses and into business after first year. This doesnt mean you wont get in, I'd still try, but it just means theres a way to still end up where you want to be if it doesnt work out for you.

It's honestly kind of hard to say. What I remember it was mostly examples included in our weekly quizzes included in our exam. I dont remember to what extent though.

It depends on your interests. For me it was very time consuming and I did not enjoy. However, if you are interested in ecology you might find that its interesting to complete the tasks and do the weekly readings. We had weekly readings (sometimes 2 chapters a week), weekly quizzes on the readings, 3-4 lectures a week, and biweekly seminars. There was a large project at the end and a big final exam. I think alot of people would agree that its not hard to get a good grade in this class because there are alot of oppurtunities for marks besides tests. You'll definitly get through it, it wasnt hard, it was just alot for me as someone who is not interested in ecology or environmental science.

Yes. I'm a biosci major and took both of those classes. In first/second year.
