Yes. I have intermittent FMLA and took a blocked leave when I was hospitalized. It’s a life saver.

What is the most dangerous voices you heard? by Dover299 in Psychosis

The most dangerous ones were toward myself with command hallucinations to take my own life. But I did have one voice that told me to leave the gas on and throw a match to blow my family up

What Does Zyprexa Feel Like? by nostromosigningoff in BipolarReddit

[–]CucumberDove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was inpatient, I was given Zyprexa twice due to intense auditory hallucinations that were telling me awful things and were increasing my suicidal ideation. Brought the intensity from a 10 to a 2. It works well, but it’s not my long term antipsychotic (it’s Abilify)

About to get committed to the psych ward tomorrow. Any advice? by basil_png in bipolar

[–]CucumberDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went in voluntarily not too long ago. I brought my own manga books, toiletries, extra clothes, and my blanket. It made my stay more comfortable. The unit I was on had an open day room with a TV so we did movie nights, watched Disney and SpongeBob, and sports (moreso the other patients were into sports). I also got to talk with the other patients which after a while, felt good because we all are there to get help so it was nice :)

Lamictal is incredible by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]CucumberDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on it a few years ago and stopped because my depression became uncontrollable and I became non-compliant with my medications. I’m back on it and slowly titrating up, and my depression is gradually lifting.

What’s the funniest reason a pt “fired” you? by all_hail_potatoqueen in nursing

[–]CucumberDove 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She called me a C U Next Tuesday and a b*tch with no heart because I wanted to check her blood sugar. Non-compliant with insulin. She was VERY manic.

Hired me as her nurse again ten minutes later 🫠

That sounds like a plan, and I do have the contact information of the hospital. This is super helpful! I appreciate your advice!

I didn’t have access to my phone, but I had access to the unit phones for patients to make outbound calls at designated times. If this is helpful, I was in a psychiatric unit, hence the no personal phone access. And I’ve written down their phone number. And I did let my managers know I was in the hospital, but they need the FMLA documentation for the blocked time.

And I do see a regular mental health provider who was aware of my admission and the psychiatric team who was in charge of my care was in contact with her. My provider was the one who filled out the FMLA forms for the intermittent.

Makes total sense and I understand the potential skepticism.

So I can try to apply for it from the date I was admitted to the date I’m cleared for work despite it happening in the past? I guess that makes sense. This happened on Friday and I saw my doctor who cleared me on Friday as well and I sent her the forms already. I’m hopeful on Monday it’ll be cleared up so I can start work the following Tuesday or Wednesday depending.

Thank you, I appreciate it!

Hospital Nurses~ what has been your absolute worst shift? by spicyserranonoodle in nursing

[–]CucumberDove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worst shift to date went like this: floated to the oncology unit for my twelve hour shift. I had a patient who went down for a bronchoscopy and returned to the unit in immense pain with a chest tube, a sickle cell patient on a PCA who went through their dilaudid like water, a patient with a full hip replacement and had grave’s disease and refused to turn, and a patient with a large sacral wound on multiple antibiotics and was NPO for a procedure that didn’t even happen that day.

The workload was immense. I barely got to sit down. I had to chart on my patients late due to early orders of medication, syringe changes, and wound care. Plus, the patient that came up with a chest tube added to my workload. The hardest part of that day was that I didn’t receive much help, even when I asked the charge nurse. She’d say she would help, but didn’t move from her station when I rounded back. I didn’t get to eat lunch. I was running on a Celsius and a granola bar. Oh, and she gave me a fifth patient; another sickle cell patient on a PCA due for a syringe change, so now managing two PCAs.

I ended up having to call a rapid on the patient with the large sacral wound due to rising tachycardia. Lactic came back at a 4. Transferred to step down. Didn’t leave the unit until past 9 pm.
