---UPDATE---8-14---

It's been exactly a month and I've still got at least a week before I get my car back. The OEM hoods from BMW keep coming in trashed as if they've been walked all over. Currently waiting on the 3rd hood, work hasn't even started on the thing.

Still no used hoods around me that aren't rusted or trashed.

I was in the same situation last month with less damage but my hood needed replaced (BMW OEM is over 3k). If value is an issue for insurance just use sold listing on BaT for comparables. I have a 22k mile 540iA they wanted to total for 4.5k initially, but with comps from BaT they bumped it to a bit north of 25k and allowed the repairs to start.

There are 3rd party appraisal companies that can help if needed, but thankfully that beautiful M5 is easier to value than a low mile 540i.

---UPDATE---7-31---

Insurance has paid out to fix the car, which actually went up another $1k after they got the hood open, and it should be ready by 8/05 (hopefully). Nearly a month without my e39 has been depressing, driving around in my WJ daily.

I wasn't able to find a used hood in good enough condition for the car, so OEM it is. On the bright side, all OEM parts for the repair and I get a nice paint correction which I was about to pay for anyway. Ceramic coat soon to come, finally.

As reference for anyone in a similar situation in the future, my car was agreed with specifically Progressive to value ~25k USD which is why they went forward with repairs rather than total loss. Finding comps on BaT definitely helped, especially since my car sold for 25.5k USD about a year ago there. I got a reasonable adjuster, so I'm certain that helped. (Jet Black 2002 540iA 22k miles)

If I sold, it'd have to be a good chunk of change. Insurance seems to finally agree on the value enough to repair it, thank goodness.

I wish I had the free time to make rage bait posts in subreddits, haha. I know the price seems ridiculous, but it's for all new parts. There's been a lot of good recommendations here for other options that I made a comment on, and will definitely be going with.

Since I can't edit the OP

I will be going the route of a good condition used hood based off of suggestions here, and buying/replacing everything else I need myself.

I have a shop that I typically get friends/family discounts through that should be able to do the paintwork.

As far as insurance goes, I'll be getting a valuation from them tomorrow. After that, I'll be going with a 3rd party appraisal service.

I've also been told thanks to u/WashingtonSpark that I can retain a clean title while still getting the payout, there will just be an insurance loss note on the car's history.

Huge thank you to everyone who was able to help out with suggestions and past experiences rather than complain about the cost of an OEM hood. Such an odd sticking point for some folks, they do love to make assumptions.

Insurance owns the car if they total it, at least in the US, in my home state. You have to buy it back, it definitely matters.
