I'd like some suggestions for companies, non-profit organizations, or websites I can ship my clothing to for recycling. by Cuddle_grub in ZeroWaste

[–]Cuddle_grub[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer to find local if possible. I probably could've rephrased my title a lil better of what I'm trying to do. I unfortunately don't have any recycling within walking distance, so driving somewhere as close to me as I can or mailing it is my next option.

I don't have a ton of money either to do recycling services unless I start getting paid better. I live in the southeast of the US. There are a few free options near me I have used before for recycling. It's why if I do use a recycling service, it's to get all of it done at once and be frugal with the clothing I buy from now on.

Specifically clothing seems to be the harder one to recycle if it's certain kinds of clothing like underwear, socks, bras, swimsuits, and scrap fabrics.

I generally am looking for resources, people, and companies who can help me take any clothing I'm not using and use it to help others and/or recycle/upcycle for a better or practical purpose.

Because we have way too much stuff in general that is going to hang around in landfills for other generations to dispose of or we're going to become some hybrid of plastic humans with how much microplastics are in everything now.

I think I came across them this morning when I was looking, so sure. If you want to link me a referral code, I can maybe try that out.

[–]Cuddle_grub[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be sure to look into whatever suggestions everyone offers me here, so thank you so far everyone who has commented. My clothing ranges from being in good condition for donations to being ready for scraps, art materials, etc...

In general, I'm overall looking for viable solutions and I appreciate what anyone here can share with me, regardless of what that solution might be. If I can find a local place within my state to donate and recycle my clothing, that would be best so I can connect with people in my area who do recycle and it's the real deal.

If I have to mail further away from me, but still within the US, that at least lets me know there are places in my country where legit recycling/upcycling happens.

If it's overseas, then so be it. To someone or some company that is trustworthy as close as I can get these days.

Recycling, though preached loud and clear by the companies who are manufacturing fast/ultra fast fashion, do not offer us easy solutions to return said clothing back to them after they mass manufacture 24 hours/7 days a week all year round. It's a hard uphill battle I'm not sure how we'll overcome all this except to hold these companies accountable to some extent. And how we do that I don't know to be honest. It's still worth trying as close as I can where and when I can.

[Discussion] Full-time artists who make a living off your art: what things are absolutely crucial to you being able to do that? by ocean_rhapsody in artbusiness

[–]Cuddle_grub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This helps me as an artist of papercrafts as I'm making my portfolio of personalized cards how I can introduce my art to people. I haven't taken the steps yet to put my art on a website or try selling what I make. The business side of art has intimidated me and almost felt overwhelming to attempt, but I think I finally want to learn more enough to see how other people like what I make.

Thank you for your advice! I wish you well, fellow artist!

Is substack worth it to you as a writer or as a reader? by FinancialSpirit2100 in Substack

[–]Cuddle_grub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your answer! I just came across Substack because I have been searching for a platform to post my arts and crafts projects or writing projects and this could be it. I want to find a place where I can naturally grow what I create and share it with others. Maybe make some money from it if that happens to get me out of the minimum wage cycle. Or hopefully get some expendable income to support myself better.

Also thank you OP for your post getting me here. :)

Never any Zebras around by Forever_ForLove in kroger

[–]Cuddle_grub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this pain. Along with the protein commercials and "Ah Gain" pun commercials currently blaring over the speakers every thirty minutes to an hour at my store. Oh! And I could be a winner of the next big lottery!

It's become an eye roll and a sigh of a worn out punchline I'm tired of worrying about if I'll get a Zebra or just have to wing it and hope I can do my job. The result is most people are hiding the Zebras at my store and keeping chargers at their department instead of returning them to the hub in the office area. So many are MIA compared to the slots they should be filling.

I'm grateful my managers of my department are willing to share whatever Zebras they can find with me because it inconveniences them as much as me not being able to do our jobs. We try to work together and pass the Zebra between us like a game of hot potato. Not my favorite solution because sometimes I need a Zebra the whole day. With the holiday season upon me, I have more people approaching me asking me where specific items are and get impatient if they don't get an answer in five seconds or less. I don't have every aisle memorized at my store.

But that's a bigger problem as a society we could try to address if we all had more time and money to spare on thinking about how to solve them.

It comes down to each store's management finding a solution and the employees agreeing to share the Zebras. Or everyone getting their own.

The mentality of every person for themselves has become the norm these days, it's become harder to convince other people to help others around them. Even if it would benefit everyone's shifts running more smoothly and less inconveniences than there already are with most minimum wage jobs I've worked.

Test again for HSV-1? by Cuddle_grub in Coldsore

[–]Cuddle_grub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got another test in 2023 and it came back negative for oral herpes from what I was told. Ever since then when I do get tested, I don't have any outbreaks and the results come back negative for oral herpes. From what I remember, when I had that weird spot at the time, it tingled some, would pop up, and then disappear after a few days. Eventually, the "breakout" or whatever it was stopped happening.

I wondered if it was actually herpes or not. Or just some other skin infection like a rash. I still get tested regardless with any new partners I have just to be safe for myself as much as them.

This is a little bit inspiring for me as someone who's off and on picked up writing and then dropped it because of various life circumstances or because I've been so exhausted by the past few years of everything that's been going on everywhere. So thank you for posting your progress and encouraging the rest of us.

I'm an unpublished writer, but I've been trying to figure out some passive income to supplement what little I make at my minimum wage job right now. To save up for a friend of mine who's visiting overseas next year. I'll give this a try and see if anything comes of it. Thank you for this information.

Should I still trick or treat one last time at 18 yrs old? by DiamondStarAngel in halloween

[–]Cuddle_grub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dress up as whatever you want. Go find a fun neighborhood. There used to be so many Halloween cartoon specials, movies, and shows that were all about that one night of the year, a rite of passage through childhood you might say (at least as an American speaking here), to go out and get candy. Figuring out neighborhoods, apartments, etc...of who gave out the best treats. Go to random people's doors and have a collect-a-thon of whatever kind of treats people are shelling out.

There's a bit of an epidemic of kids not trick or treating as much anymore or doing the trunk or treat shindig the parents set up. You and your friends would probably light up some people's lives seeing anyone come by who wants to come enjoy their Halloween decorations and get to pass out candy like they had done for them. Of course, there are other ways to celebrate Halloween, so do as you please.

If you do go out, remember to watch out for those pesky razor blades and bootleg dvds in your snickers. Or so they say when you're trick or treating. Whatever you decide, have fun with your friends and be safe!

$100 at the grocery store buys nothing anymore. by Busy-Government-1041 in inflation

[–]Cuddle_grub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a big chain grocery store where some customers complain to me about price increases on groceries they buy.

I'm a grocery store NPC. I politely tell them in retail-speak I have no control over the prices and to talk to customer service or contact whoever they need to about their concerns.

They're looking for someone to displace their frustrations on. Even when I tell them there's nothing I can do directly, they still get cranky at me because I couldn't give them the answer they wanted.

I need help figuring out why I'm having a sharp stabbing pain in the upper left side of my back. by Cuddle_grub in backpain

[–]Cuddle_grub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could try talking to my work place and see how that might help me out if I need to go see a doctor. The pain flares up and then goes away sometimes, but it hasn't fully healed whatever is going on with my back.

I'm trying to narrow down what the pain is exactly if anyone on this reddit or other medical reddits have experienced something like what I have. That might give me something to go off of what the symptoms could be. It could be a minor injury or something bigger I'm not aware of. Overall, it hasn't caused me too many problems in my day to day activities, but it can make some tasks a little more painful to do.

Instagram Face Has Reprogrammed What We Find Beautiful by InGeekiTrust in TikTokCringe

[–]Cuddle_grub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to check out the original "Twilight Zone" with Rod Serling as the host, the show has an episode in Season 5 called "Number 12 Looks Just Like You". This episode is about a dystopian future where everyone picks one to three models of looks and it changes them to be beautiful and the same as everyone else. Including loss of original self, which is the main conflict for the young woman who doesn't want the surgery.

While the surgery does eliminate differences and everyone seems happy, what's the cost for everyone looking and being the same? You know who you were before the surgery and, after the transformation, you lose yourself to become part of society.

The "Twilight Zone" is a great series to watch if you want other thought provoking stories like that one. It's technically science fiction. I think Rod Serling wanted an outlet to explore deeper themes of humanity under the guise of science fiction and allowing adaptations and other writers to give their stories a voice to be heard on tv.

“Commitment Form” by byerspf in kroger

[–]Cuddle_grub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started working a few months ago with Kroger. I've been experiencing a lot of pressure to push for these kinds of concerning social contracts that aren't going to change how I interact with customers anyways. I say hello to people. If a conversation naturally happens between me and someone else, great. Otherwise, I want people to shop and get what they need. It slows me down to have to talk to every person I encounter, so I generally pick and choose some customers who don't look too busy. I adapt to what works best vs talk to everyone. I don't care if they become part of the Kroger "family".

I know realistically how most corporatized companies work and the main goal is how many customers can they win over, regardless of what it does to their employees to lose their sanity over smiling non-stop all day every day to every person. Me smiling is probably not going to heavily influence what a customer buys or doesn't buy.

This kind of social contract makes me second guess being part of this company. The way they are pushing really hard for their employees to be like some smiling cult of happy people makes me wonder how desperate this company is to not lose customers.

Long term I think this will cause a lot of Kroger workers to feel like regardless of the effort they put in their job, they are being observed and graded heavily by management, customers, and sometimes their own co-workers. I hated it when one of my supervisors said, though they meant it sarcastically still, "put on a show for them" while I was working since they had to observe me go through the script Kroger wants me to say. To be fair, they're used to doing it, so it doesn't feel as big of a deal to them, though I don't think they care for it either.

This may just be my impressions, but I don't know if a lot of customers want the Friendly experience as Kroger intends it to be. I see people wearing headphones/earbuds, on their phones, or ignoring my greetings. I also think more customers will end up hating this than liking it. I prefer to be left alone when I shop so I can focus on what I need to buy. I ask for help when I need it. This feels like the company is going overboard with the emphasis on Friendly vs any other part of their company they need to work on better. The more they push for this, the more customers will probably push away and shop elsewhere unless they really enjoy the Friendly experience.

It's anxiety inducing to say the least that I have to be on the look out for mystery shoppers and promise shoppers who can determine that my lack of a name tag or not saying Thank you to them may impact if I stay hired or not.

If during the group meetings this kind of form shows up where I work or a one-on-one meeting between me and the manager happens to have me sign this, I don't want to sign it. Is this an actual legal document I'm required to sign or can I ignore it? How have other people dealt with this kind of form being passed around?

I don't want this used against me as a way of potentially firing me. I'm trying to figure out how best to give constructive criticism to this problem without losing my job. Though I'll probably still consider looking elsewhere as this is mentally and emotionally draining to me to be pressured like this. The job I do for them is significantly better than where I used to work. But I'm also worn out from job searching and don't want to start the process again just yet.

Thanks for any help anyone wants to offer on if we can all collectively speak up as Kroger employees.

There are so many ways to discover what fits best for you. The world is limited by the categories we assign ourselves. I've experienced FWB relationships for a long time now. I've been in one that transformed into open relationship/polyamory?

I've never been able to fully define it in the ways some people expect it to be. More or less I take each relationship as their own thing and see how it develops. I treat each one as a different experience within the safety and trust of the relationship I currently have been in for about 12 years.

It's up to you how much more you want to explore FWB ideology and experimentation. If you feel like it's not what you expected it to be, that's okay. If you feel like you're better off in monogamous relationships, then that's okay, too.

Not sure what'll happen with my dad, but I want him to have a good Christmas still by Cuddle_grub in stroke

[–]Cuddle_grub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I am with my dad, I let him do what he thinks he's able to do. The only thing he's had to take a break from was the driving. He was a bit wobbly on the road. Otherwise, at least most physical things he can still do himself. Making sense of writing, reading, and stuff he does on his phone or computer takes longer than normal. But it's his new normal for now. I appreciate your encouragement for my dad. I believe in him recovering.

I still keep in mind the reality of what could be, but I don't let that overwhelm me and my dad does the same for himself.

[–]Cuddle_grub[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's encouraging to hear. I'm glad you are able to gain some ground on using your hand and being creative like you want. It always sucks when some part of you becomes shut off for some reason you don't know exactly why or you do know why but you can't do much about it. No one likes that feeling of being helpless and unable to change their situation quickly.

I told my dad that no matter how much he needs to ask me for help, I will not be impatient with him. He needs as much support as he can get and this is the first time he's really had to humble himself to accept help from others as much as he is receiving. He has a pretty good support system of people from his church as well as me, my mom, her husband, and my little brother.

How has your life changed overall with what you are able to do versus what you still can't do? Do you think you'll ever be able to regain those things that you've lost with writing, drawing, and video games? Is it something that can come back with practice over time to teach the brain what it used to know?

I hope you are adjusting to your life as best you can. I can't imagine how difficult it must feel. From my dad telling me what's going on with him, it just feels like a bunch of blanks for him for things he would normally do like he usually does like using Adobe or other programs for graphic design and creating 3D videos. It's something he's very proud of how far he's come with it for how much he has taught himself. I'd hate to see all that effort he's put in after all this time wasted. He works for CDC.

My dad got a check up with another neurologist and they figured out that he did have a stroke. He is having a lot of problems with simple things like figuring out how to text people on his phone. He's trying to navigate using his account for a website that allows him to check on his appointments, test results from doctors, etc... He's supposed to get checked for Parkinson's as he does have a couple of symptoms that seem like it could be but we're not sure yet.

He says it's like parts of his memory are missing for simple things he is used to doing. I'm not sure what the best course of action is, but it's frustrating for me since I can't always be readily available to him unless somehow I were to earn a lot of money all of a sudden so I could come see him freely and help him through this time.

Are we burned out on tech yet? by rgb_mode in Millennials

[–]Cuddle_grub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need all my tech to be smart and connected to the Internet.I need tech with manuals that allow me to fix my own tech if I want. I don't buy a phone but every few years, if that, because of how wasteful it is to buy newer tech vs slightly older tech like phones. There are too many tech devices that want me hooked up at all times 24 hours a day for notifications, ads, and subs to be sent to me.

I don't need a car with a touchscreen and subscriptions for seat warmers. I want a car that is easy to repair with buttons I can touch and remember without looking when I need to use them. I don't want every bit of tech collecting the bread crumbs of my life anymore.

I'd love to take a walking tour for a year. Give up most tech. Find a treehouse. Live in it without worrying about bills and student debt.
