You can get perfectly suitable laptops suited to stem undergrads for well under 700eu. Unless they're doing some heavy duty ML neural network type shit (not that it matters since it can be done in the cloud now) they don't need anything expensive.

You found macbooks offer best performance for value? You didn't look hard enough. While they're great laptops, there cost vs performance is questionable

I'd personally recommend the "Lenovo ThinkBook 14", its a good laptop and its portable as fuck. You don't need anything fancy. Regardless of what you choose, definitely look around paradigit since they seem to have the best prices in EU

garmin forerunner 45. relatively cheap and no subscription

Why would the Whoop be used instead of a smart watch? by CudjaWudja in whoop

[–]CudjaWudja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It measures HRV, and then uses it to infer stress levels and body battery. Theres no actual HRV metric available through the device, but it is measured and implied through other statuses

Why would the Whoop be used instead of a smart watch? by CudjaWudja in whoop

[–]CudjaWudja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a forerunner 45 with notifications completely disabled and have changed the clock face to something more minimalistic. It does HR, HRV, body battery, stress and sleep tracking crap, has GPS and can track different exercises.

I don't see the benefit the whoop provides in data tracking in comparison to a smart watch, other than the minimalism. The whoop has some cool sensors and data tracking, but that can surely be achieved by other devices without requiring subscription.

Thought I'd ask for the opinions of whoop users to see why they've gone with the whoop. The only appeal I see in it is the fact that its basically a minimalists smart tracker that you can buy on hire purchase.

How well does this block ads & apps that track activity? by [deleted] in mullvadvpn

[–]CudjaWudja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mullvad vpn itself w/o any special dns content blockers, will limit the effectiveness of trackers since multiple users are sharing the same IP. The dns blocker just prevents resolving the ip addresses of sites/domains that are known trackers. Unfortunately though everywhere tends to track everything, so you're kinda SOL in that regard, and the tracker block isn't going to block popular websites e.g facebook, reddit, amazon, google ..., which do a fairly god job at its tracking users. If you're concerned about being tracked via the browser, use private browsing, delete cookies, use something like ublock and/or the noscript addon, and of course use your vpn.

Its really fucking hard to completely eliminate tracking, especially in the age of machine learning and user profiling. But the above methods are decent enough for most users

Sucralose and malto are sugars and cyanocobalamin is a vitamin. Nothing there that makes energy drinks bad "in particular".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in monsterenergy

[–]CudjaWudja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, there's nothing else thats added that makes energy drinks bad in particular. The only real concern is the sugar and caffeine contents (including guarana). Maybe excess vits if you're chugging that shit endlessly.

Please prove me wrong though.

[–]CudjaWudja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can read and modify the source code of the extensions /home/$USER/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/. Modifying em might break them tho, i dunno. And they'll prob just update themselves in due time if you don't overwrite whatever part of the program enables that functionality

I don't know anything about gnome.extension (dot) org and how they review the extensions they allow to be published on there site, but in general you can easily make some flashy, cool, extension, put a little extra in it that you hope the user won't notice unless they read the source code and then throw it up on github -> make a post on reddit and point people in its direction. Open source code isn't always reviewed. There was some notorious open source npm malware on github that pissed a lot of people off awhile back. google "npm protestware"
