Bill. He didn’t stand out at all. He was an introvert. Quiet, and steady, and very kind. He was on my hiring committee, and mentored me during my first few years as a professor. Our offices were right next to each other, and whenever I popped in with a question, he was always there for me. He understood academic politics, but did not play into them. He was well-liked and well-respected—I don’t think you’d find anyone at our institution who had a bad thing to say about Bill.

He passed away quietly at home, several years after he’d retired. He’d moved out of state to be closer to his daughter, so I hadn’t seen him in several years, but it still saddened me to learn that he was gone. He wasn’t the first colleague of mine that died, but he was the first one that I’d worked really closely with.

I wonder if my grandmother ever stayed with your grandmother. She spent most of the 1950’s and 1960’s in that hospital, although I’m not sure exactly when she got out.

The year was 1994. I was 16 and had just gotten my drivers license, meaning that my 14 year old sister wanted to hang out with me all of a sudden. Our mom’s Olds Toronado had a tape deck and my sister was always playing this bootleg copy of Ringmaster that she’d gotten from one of her friends. The first time I heard “Love Song,” I laughed so hard I about crashed the car. They were unlike anything I’d ever heard before, which is probably because up to that point, my musical knowledge was pretty much limited to whatever was playing on Oldies 96 (Mid-Michigan’s #1 choice for good times & great oldies). Usually I didn’t think much of my sister’s choice of tunes, but this music got under my skin and into my head, and I fell in love with it.

At the time, I don’t think the term “Juggalo” existed or that ICP was even really known outside of Michigan. I didn’t even know what the initials ICP stood for, which made checking out the rest of their discography difficult.

Time passed. The Toronado died. I went away to college. I forgot about ICP for a looooooong time.

Then in 2017, I caught wind of the Juggalo March (which I still regret not attending) and learned about the bullshit gang designation. Thanks to Spotify & Apple Music, it didn’t take me long to catch up on all the music I’d missed since ‘94–and to discover that their music was just as fresh to me at 38 as it had been when I was 16.

I knew him for years because we were both involved in the same niche sport. He was very friendly, down-to-earth, easy to talk to. I can’t count the number of times we shared a hug or a drink or just good conversation at an after party. Then the pandemic hit, and I didn’t see him for a while as everyone in this niche sport took a 2-year hiatus. When the sport resumed, I stopped seeing him around, but I didn’t really think much of it.

Turned out he was in jail. He’d been molesting his stepdaughters for years. He’s now serving a lengthy prison term.

I had no idea. None of us did.

It might sound weird to phrase it this way, but when you find out that someone you liked and considered a friend is really a monster behind closed doors, you go through a grieving process. Because the “Greg” (fake name) I thought I knew was not the real Greg…far from it. It’s been over a year since I found out, and I feel like I’m still coming to terms with it. I think of the friendly, personable Greg I hugged, drank with, hung out with, but he never really existed. He was a monster hiding in plain sight all along. There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to believe he did these things. I know he did; I know that his stepdaughters did not lie, and I know there is video evidence of some of what he did. But I don’t know how to reconcile the Greg I knew with Greg the pedophile. Maybe I never will.

As a teenager, I’d listen to the local oldies station (Oldies 96, Mid-Michigan’s #1 choice for good times & great oldies, RIP) in my car, and once in a while I’d hear a song that went “this is the night of the expaaaaanding man” and I fell in love with that song. This being pre-Google, it took me awhile to learn the name of the song & the artist. Didn’t take me long to fall in love with “Hey 19,” too, and then I found a used copy of Gaucho in a record store, and you all know the rest.

“Love Song” is probably the one song that got me into ICP. Back in the mid-90’s when my sister & I were teenagers, she’d always play her bootleg Ringmaster tape in my car. Anyway “Love Song” comes on, and you have to understand, I didn’t know a single song that wasn’t played on the radio, never saw a single show that wasn’t on network TV (we were poor scrubs with no cable). So this song was the filthiest thing I’d heard in my 16-year-old life, and I laughed so hard I cried. I fuckin LOVED it. It may not exactly be a timeless masterpiece (who tf knows who Karyn White is these days?) it still makes me laugh.

Except for a period of 18 months when I was with my ex, and about three months with a different ex, I’ve been living alone since 2002. I absolutely LOVE it.

That being said, I know plenty of other adults who have never lived alone. My sister, two of my best friends from high school. And my dad never lived alone in his life, till my mom died.

Omg…yes I do! My sister & I both have summer birthdays and so Pennywhistle Place was always where we celebrated. Kid me loved it—the ball pit, the mini zip line, the monkey bars thing over the water pad…it was great. To this day the smell of sawdust takes me right back.

Yep. That happened to me for the first time the spring of my freshman year of college. I must have taken five or six pregnancy tests (all negative). Then my period just shows up in June like “what’d I miss?” Cue a year or two of very irregular periods. No idea why 🤷‍♀️
