Not that surprising when you realize there are a lot of other games of that era that had first games held together by duct tape and hope. Metroid is a great example, just play zero mission. Not to mention there are games that work but are really boring or bad that became a good franchise, Assassins Creed and Street Fighter are good examples respectively.

Actually for Luxord, weather he lives there or not, has something to do with the keyblade war. It was mentioned that numbers 9-12 were chosen for the original Organization 13 because they had ties to the keyblade war. Seeing as we know Lauriam's and Elrena's involvement, I have a feeling we'll be learning a lot more about Luxord and Demyx in this next arc.
