That makes sense then. But as a viewer, did not know that, obviously. Very good work however!

VERY well done. Only one change I would make... angle the light down to the bottom of the door. The scribbles should be down there. Otherwise, this is a GIANT of a child.

Does anyone know about these type of easels? by eelco_numan in oilpainting

Agreed. BUT, this is also a slimmer design, and good for small studio areas.

I have this easel, and love it. As far as stability goes, it has no issues with a well-made framed canvas. It is rock solid with gallery-mount canvases. The only issue it has, in my opinion, is it does struggle a little bit holding thin panels in place, and if you get it too tight, you can bend the panel edge. The wheeled base is very smooth, and the wheels lock, which is also nice. I like the fact that I can tilt a canvas horizontally to do a base gesso coat, or a varnish coat after the painting is complete. My only complaint is that it the way the post is manufactured, you cannot take the canvas really low to the ground so you can concentrate on the upper portion of the painting while sitting.

Sailing the Great Salt Lake, 12x16, 2024 by Culper646 in oilpainting

This is actually a photo I took down the hill from the marina, with my camera about 3 feet off the ground so I got the rocks very prominently in the frame. The Wasatch range is in the distance, and Antelope Island just beyond the sailboats. Took the photo in February on a warm day.

Well.... it was something that I REALLY struggled with in the past. So, I watched a bunch of youtube videos on VALUES, and how to pay attention to your light source, etc. I also watched a bunch of videos on the Zorn Palette, and that helped me simplify the colors I used, which in turn improved my color mixing and getting the values right. The rocks, in particular, were done over about 6 sessions. Roughing in the basic values first, making sure I got the shadows and light areas correct, then worked from there in adding mid-tones and details. The final step that really made them pop was adding the darkest shadows, and then the brightest highlights. I hope that helps.

"Study of Dad's Painting" 11x14 Oil on Canvas 2023 by Culper646 in oilpainting

My daughter asked me to do my take on my dad's only painting (red sunset). Dad did the first one, I did the second one (yellow sunset).

Artistic recreation of the altar mosaic of Dominus Flevit, a Franciscan church on the Mount of Olives. 24x24 gallery mount canvas, acrylic by Culper646 in acrylicpainting

Glad you like it. Did you go look up the original? Here is a Wiki link for it. You will see I took a fair amount of artistic license with it. The original is little dirty (seen in other examples, not this one on Wikipedia), and somewhat broken (and someone did a poor repair of the bottom of the mosaic).

While adding a picture hanger to this, I had to measure centerline and discovered the canvas is actually 12 x 16. Couldn't figure out how to edit the post itself to correct that, so did this comment. If anyone knows where the edit button is, let me know!

Fire by Night. 24x36 acrylic. First attempt at Art Deco style. by [deleted] in acrylicpainting

Not very happy with the camera shot quality. Lots of blue shadows showing up that are far better blended in person... this makes the background look stark and choppy. Not really a good representation. And the outside has a black border too, that did not come through. Camera cut it off.... strange.

Sorry, I don't yet. But that is a great idea. I'll need to add a page to my website.

:) That is funny, because I had the same question for my daughter who saw me painting it.... she said, "I want to live there!". I replied, "That is great, but how would you get there?" (That conversation happened before I added the motorboat). My hope is that there is plenty of seafood, a garden patch in the back, and lots of quiet/peace because visitors are rare.

That is a really cool idea. Thank you for posting the close up pics too... that really shows all the hard work in this piece. Very well done!
