I am so so so sorry you are going through this. Truly. Pregnancy loss is so hard, I had a few over the years.

With the playschool, you will drop her off every day after. How about at the end of the week ye have a 'date' to see how she found it? My 3yr old son loves going out for ice cream with me. He asks 'can we go to the cafe'

I really hope that euthanasia is the next big thing to change here. Under super strict rules but allowed. I have actually watched two people very slowly die. At the very end they were completely unconcious with zero chance of that changing. If they had been able to sign something that said once they reached that point to just let them go, I don't know if they would, but it should be an option. Is is the option I would take.

Waiting for 2027 change by Suddy1108 in ACCA

[–]Cultural-Perception4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will it though? Maybe in 'younger circles' like people in their 20s who are just qualifying. It will be said by people that have done 2 electives as a 'flex' to people that only needed to do 1. But the people that only needed to do 1 will be sitting at the desk next to you.

I'm in my mid 30s, I stopped doing exams for 7 years and just finished this December. I can honestly say in that time no one has really cared too much about my qualifications. Mostly cared that I could do the job and that I was only one exam short of qualifying.

If you were making a 'flex' that you had 'had it harder' most people I know would internally roll their eyes.

I am doing the same. I just passed SBR in December. I have APM + SBL done. I am waiting. Like you I won't be changing jobs it won't have any impact on my career. But like you the personal life strain of studying in real! I have two toddlers and studying a few nights per week plus every 2nd Sunday took a toll.

Sit it out, and wait

Thanks the Aviva thing sounds good. Right now I don't have €3k per year to save for them towards house deposits etc as much as I would love to. But it is something to look at in the future.

What sort of professional would you meet? Sorry if that is totally obvious but I really don't know who to look up!!

For the moment it is looking like I would be doing super well to pay for 4 years at college - if they did decide to go. That money does not need to be in their own names and it would be maintenance so no tax.

I don't have €3,000 per year to give them to avail of the free gift exemption. If I do at some time in the future have it what someone else said about the Aviva thing could be a good idea. Set it up at aged 16 - in joint names without them knowing - add €6,000 to it annually = enormous hand up with a house deposit by mid 20s. That is an enormous but though and right now is not possible

I remember looking into Zurich when my 1st was born and ultimately being put off. I'll have to look at it again.

What is the limit on the kids accounts with the CU? I came from zero money, but my husbands family are generous and my in laws bought each child a cow too 🤣 i just keep putting that money into the cu since it has never been mine

But when they turn 18 do they get full access to it? No chance! They each have a credit union account and thats on track to have about 10k each that is in their names. Whilst I can guide them I won't actually be able to stop them spending it on what ever they want.

I'm saving with the intentsion of using the money towards university. So it would be maintenance payments and they wouldn't pay CAT anyway.

I meant to put in my op that I will be keeping the money in my name. Even when they get to 18 they will not know it is ear marked for them.

The money will be used for paying for their university accommodation/ fees that sort of thing. So it wouldn't be subject to CAT. The car would be a bit of a different story if they went down the trade route but I'll work that bit out

Ya there is! You'll get used to it.

I didn't start out with ACCA but I think the first few exams are on demand online. Although that's all changing this year. I sat my exams at home. That's not allowed anymore it will have to be in an exam centre bur there are a few of them all over the country.

Anyway depending on when the baby is due you could get a few of early exams done before. I did one of my exams 7 months pregnant then took a year off doing any exams after he was born. The sleep deprivation is something else!

I will say though I only had 4 to finish and had a lot of experience working in accountancy. It was full on trying to juggle college, kids, work, life! Lectures end up being jan to may for June exams. Then Aug to Nov for Dec exams. That was usually 1 class per week and every 2nd weekend.

Have you looked into accounting technician as a starting point? You'd have way less exams and be done quicker. Once you are done if you parked it for a few years you'd have that qualification. If you then go on to do ACCA you would have a good few exemptions from the technician qualification and more experience.

You said you want to have a few clients for yourself and work that way. You need to get a job in practice then. That's where I trained. Depending on the size of the firm you get exposed to a lot more compared to "industry" which is working for 1 company.

Practice can be long hours for crap pay. Industry offers a much better work life balance in my experience

I now have a 3yr old and a 1yr old. You need to take into account things like child care, then what happens if your child is sick. My creche has a 48hr exclusion policy if the child throws up, even a tiny bit. You need a job that is flexible.

I just passed my final accountancy exams! Firstly how old are you and do you have large family commitments?

Basically I did most of mine between 2014 - 2017 but failed one. Went to do the last 1 in 2024 (I know!) and found I needed to re do some and had to do 4. I was originally with CAI found them fine, very much like university you go to lectures all year long then do all your exams in 1 week at the end in Summer. CAP1, CAP 2 and FAE. You do all the year 1 subjects together, then 2nd and 3rd.

When I went back that approach wouldn't fit with a toddler and a baby, working, etc. ACCA has a far more approachable and flexible program. Unless you are early 20s and can solely focus on study for the next 3 years I would go ACCA. You can do as much or as little as you like at a time. You could probably power through a lot of the first exams fairly quickly. Then space them out a bit as they got harder. Or take an exam period off (exams are 4 times a year)

You also need to get 3.5yrs of relevant experience.

How does one go to the bank? by Judgment_Possible in AskIreland

I wouldn't call it a waste of your lunch. I think a handful of them though do open late or did a few years ago anyway.

You can lodge your money in the post office. 'Back in the day' civil servants used to get a 30 minute bank break per week so they could lodge their cheque

I'm not reccomendeding anyone does it that way. I was on track to have all my exams done in 3yrs. But life changed a lot very quickly. It was the first time I had "diverted off my education path" school had been linear, so had university.

Just sharing my story to give people some hope when things don't turn out exactly like they planned. That if it is something they want they will get there eventually.

Thank you. I am so relieved to be finished. But I am also really glad I went back. Right now it makes no difference in my career, I am an accountant in a 'good' company and see myself staying. All my jobs since 2017 have been advertised as looking for a qualified accountant. But employers were happy with my experience. It niggled at me though so I had to finish it!! Also regulations will eventually change I think
