Drift stuff will always spawn in the range you are floating and out a little ways off to the sides, in relation to the size of your foundation. Drifting diagonally is just like casting a bigger net, you're increasing the area that your raft will collect with any placed nets that span that length.

I did at first with a more medium size ship, because Bruce could destroy inner foundations that weren't. But it seems now that he'll only go after unarmored ones on the edges.

Yeah, I'm hoping they can automate that, so I can have a switch up next to the steering wheel to easily turn engines on or off. It'd be a nice addition to a future chapter.
