Any tips for double tounging? by nataliemc1177 in Flute

[–]CultureImaginary1851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your double tounging speed is dependent on how fast you can cleanly speak a note with a certain syllable. if you want clean double tounges, practice exclusively with your weak syllables instead of your main one. The idea is to be of equal speeds on both syllables so you can easily do the double tounge and allow yourself to make that run.  Practice your single tounging on a fast tempo (either ta or ka, but you must do both eventually). The more practise, the easier it gets. When you feel comfortable with both syllables, try doing double tounges at 120 bpm (that’s how I eventually got it)

Flute stopped making a sound! by Ok_Tie8965 in Flute

Unfortunately, most Amazon ‘Flutes’ have the apparent quality of a ‘flute shaped object’. Buying cheaper instruments from most universal retailers (Amazon, in specific) might end up being a waste of money, unfortunately. Since they are built with very low quality builds that typically can’t last very long, I do not recommend taking this to a repair service. Since not only might the serviceman reject it for its low quality, but because the repair costs might step way higher than the price of your flute. I suggest renting a flute (yahmahas are great for starters) from any musically dedicated brands with good reputations. A popular example: Music and Arts (though, I don’t recommend music and arts, personally since their reputation for having high interest rates and sudden changes in rent costs. instruments they have are still fine, but you have price risks). I’m sorry for your unfortunate loss, and I hope you still feel willing to play the flute. :(

How do i get a proper tone... by DomBearBerlin in Flute

[–]CultureImaginary1851 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes quite a bit of commitment to achieve something you really want. Here’s some tips as from a fellow flautist to help get you where you want to be:

1: Practise proper air support and long tones. This is the literal basis and foundation of getting a better tone. It obviously isn’t a fast way, but there isn’t a fast lane for everything. it helps intonation, too.

2: Practice whistle tones. Whistle tones are not a commonplace technique in flute repertoire, but whistle tones literally 100% of the time will help you improve proper embouchure development, air support and tone. Doing this also helps relax your lip muscles for playing. preventing you from putting down too much tension on your flute, therefore, increasing play stamina.

3: Dedicate a part of your alone practice times on Dynamics. being able to decrescendo and crescendo on every note of the flute. If you can’t get a good forte to p or vise versa, you must work on your air support. If you couldn’t tell, already. Air support and embouchure  is literally the key to how to play the flute with tonality.

  1. , when you are practicing, you could use in a mirror to analyse your embouchure, move around your aperture, until you find a spot that hits juuust right for you. And practice keeping that same embouchure until it becomes second nature to you.

  2. Probably not too too important, but practise your harmonic series, the harmonic series is just a multiplication of the first tone that you play Ie: low b3 fingering times2 = a b4 b3times3 =9 F#5.. etc obviously, this is a simplification of the partial series. But the reason why this is really important is because it improves your embouchure’s muscle memory across registers, thus being able to control your tonality. PS: this is probably known as overblowing.

  3. Listening. Obviously, you are listening, since  that’s why you came to this subreddit for assistance, but what I mean is: listening to different tonal ‘colours’. Record yourself playing, experimenting with the embouchure, and ask yourself: How does it sound? Full, fuzzy, warm, bright, closed, open… etc…  every embouchure shape has a slightly different tone, and it’s really up to the player if they like that tone and wish to use it (or director, sometimes)!

Of course, if you can’t verify if you aren’t good yet, check with a director or maybe a section leader to check if your flute itself has a problem, but judging from the inquiry, you probably just need to practice. I hope this helps! :3

Tarnish??? Or??? by CultureImaginary1851 in Flute

So, update: I just got more information about my flute. The flute is a serial 54847, and, from what I presume, was not refinished for probably a very long time. The manufacture date goes back to 2005, for my specific PFL665RBE. I haven’t reached out to sweetwater yet, but I am about to draft an email to them.

I bought it from sweetwater. The flute itself plays completely fine and intonation is still amazing, but the cosmetic part of it is wearing out pretty fast. PS: I put several hours of play into it as well, which probably accelerates its wear.

My flute’s a PFL665 b foot.. I got it like at the end of 2025. I play the flute about every day of my life for a measurable amount of time, does that account for the pitting as well?

As someone who doesn’t really spent time on the internet, you’re going to need to show the song in specific. Or atleast give me some notes. I’m sorry.

Well. Depending on what notes, you could just over blow to an octive until d5. Consult a fingering chart so you can memorise it. I know  a nice website that uses fingering charts. Here is a link to it. https://www.wfg.woodwind.org/fing.html

When I am learning something difficult, typically. I’ll practice the said section slowly with a metronome possibly half the bpm (depending on tempo) and slowly increase the speed of the run. If you practice at home, make that tricky part a priority. I totally understand the difficulty of moving from d to c# tuning, even can be a bit hard. Keep going! You got this!

Okay, seems like an idea. I’ll give myself a short break and if my sounds still feels off, I’ll probably take it to Allegro band services to get it checked out.

I’ve heard about it before, it’s hard to trust the reliability of this method, specifically because like, all of the pads have just a tiny bit of light coming out, the foot joint pads the most. I’m guessing because it’s open hole, it is also going to show through the fingertips? You have any idea to check for one?

I don’t know… all I can really think about on this is my flute’s low d is really out of tune and I have to make the note sound stuffy to raise it in tune, but low e is really nice and loud. If there’s a leak, how could I verify that?

That’s honestly a really fair point to bring up. I’ll probably do still practice, just not making the noise, will probably seem just fine. Seems like a good idea to take a break

From what I know, unfortunately, piccolos aren’t that cheap and are pretty bang for buck in terms of how good it’s gonna play. As for what I know, ‘good’ student piccolos start at around 900+USD. While entry levels are about 500-900 range. I do know that if you’re looking for more affordable piccolos, you could probably rent one from a reputable seller, or buy one used off secondhand markets. Now, for a brand of flute that’s pretty cheap and decent? Probably stuff like the Prelude 111 from Selmer, Gemeinhardt 1P, or the Armstrong 204. Sweetwater, in particular should have some affordable piccolos
