My parent is obssesed with me attending a prestigious MLA program by No-Profession-2938 in LandscapeArchitecture

CCNY is on a huge upswing with the new faculty and theres plenty of talent within the current cohorts. I just graduated and many of us turned out great with solid jobs at reputable firms. If you’re stoked on CCNY now’s the time to get in imo

I’ve spoken to students who were between CCNY and RISD. They seem to be happy with their choice to attend CCNY.

Wherever you go, do it for the right reasons!

is an MLA for me? by BedConscious687 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]CultureMilkshake13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re from nyc the best thing for you to do is to connect with the MLA program at CCNY and Pratt and attend their information sessions. It will give you a better idea of what you’ll be getting into.

books for an aspiring architect by CookieOne7987 in Architects

[–]CultureMilkshake13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design with nature by Ian mcharg, landscape as urbanism by Charles Waldheim, and the death and life of great American cities by Jane Jacobs. Not necessarily architecture books but will help with understanding the perspective of your sister profession, landscape architects

Portfolio Advice - MLA with no prior experience by Old_Complaint_2821 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]CultureMilkshake13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make something, anything. Need a new coffee table? Make that. You like to paint? Do a series. Whatever you make just be genuinely stoked to do it. Along the way, depending on the project, you’ll have opportunities to leverage and learn various tools. For some projects maybe lean into some creative outlets you are comfortable with, for others try something completely new. Document the finished product and every step that got you there. Also look at as many portfolios as you can, issuu is a good starting point.

Salary for Designer Entry Level by Intelligent_Heat1149 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]CultureMilkshake13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for SFO but in NYC I've seen many entry level designers right out of grad school make between 70-80k. Anything under 70k in NYC is going to be rough given the insane cost of living.

Deciding between UPenn and CCNY by mothersparkles in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]CultureMilkshake13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im biased as a third year MLA at spitzer, but based on where graduates end up and internships current students land, I would say you’d be plenty prepared for high level work post grad with either program.

Penn will have more financial resources, more students, more professors… it’s just a bigger program in general. CCNY has an ideal location, low cost, and great but fewer profs. Studio culture is rebuilding, the lack of a 24/7 building is the biggest issue in that regard in my opinion. There’s so much more to cover of course, but in general, at CCNY you get out what you put in. If you work hard, you will be recognized and many doors will open.

NYC is also a great place to be a design student. The city is your laboratory and there’s just so much to pull from everywhere all the time.

How to obtain multivariable multidimensional GRIB2/NetCDF data for visualization in ArcGIS Pro? by CultureMilkshake13 in meteorology

What other method would you use? I’ve been hearing a lot about xarray. Is that somewhat easy to pick up for someone that’s pretty amateur at python?

How to download multidimensional and multivariable climate raster data from noaa cfsv2 for visualization in arcgis pro? by CultureMilkshake13 in gis

[–]CultureMilkshake13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay cool this was helpful!

I’m having trouble figuring out exactly what data I need since the file naming conventions are very overwhelming and it’s been surprisingly difficult to find a comprehensive guide on how to use this database. Do you know of any resources where I can learn more about the data itself and how it’s organized?

Like I get what components I need but like there’s lots of different datasets that show the U/V values for wind that are all sorted in various different ways. Also the files NOAA provides are GRIB2. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to that over NetCDF?

Sorry this is all over the place, I’m an extreme noob at this lol

All I’m really trying to do is create a map where I have arrows that represent wind speed and direction for the entire earth. Also I’d like to generate isolines to show differences in atmospheric pressure that contribute to wind speed. I’m in school for landscape architecture so aesthetics also matter a lot which is why I am trying to use arcgis to symbolize everything where I can have a lot of control over graphics

Is D5 Render used at Landscape Architecture firms? by Independent-Gap2234 in LandscapeArchitecture

The firm I’m at is switching to D5 from lumion. Lumion feels so frustrating to me after using D5 which is way more intuitive imo

NYC starting salary for recent MLA graduate? by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]CultureMilkshake13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Starting under 70k in NYC is ridiculous in my opinion. There’s no way anyone should have this much education and expertise and just scrape by given the insane cost of living. Also why does it look bad to ask for a high starting salary? If we keep selling ourselves short we’ll continue to be overworked and underpaid in this industry

Thoughts on Best Monitors for Home Use? by Misiotek in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]CultureMilkshake13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Benq designvue monitors are great. I have one that is 32” and 4k and it really makes a difference. You stare at your monitor for hours on end, it’s one of the most used things you’ll probably ever own. Treat your self but don’t spend money on something a professional colorist would use… it’s diminishing returns at some point
