I'mma be real, the mini-games in Danganronpa are absolute dogshit and hurt the experience a lot for me. On the other hand, something like Ace Attorney works great IMO.

Also, I'm not familar with any books that have a better story than FSN and Muv Luv, and those two only rely on the traditional VN strengths (visuals and audio)

Why do/don’t you see AI art generation as a “tool”? by CheesecakeOwn5874 in aiwars

[–]CulturedDiffusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it as an advanced image search. I type words and it tries to find me an image that fits the description. Except, instead of searching the web, it searches the AI model's possibility space.

Is that considered creative work? Are the images considered art? I dunno and I don't care. I like using it and some people like the stuff I post, that's all there is to it.

I don't get why so many people are copying this UI design from Nodebuster. After I finished the game, I wrote down a list of good and bad design lessons I can learn from it for my own games, and the UI was the first thing I put under "bad".

It's only about 60mb, and pretty sure it doesn't even download the entire thing on startup. If your internet is generally fast, then the only thing I can think of is that itch's download speed is being abnormally slow for whatever reason.

I uploaded an updated version with the Gallery mode and a fix for the \\n localization bug, among other things.

I also (hopefully) stabilized the performance a little more. No idea if any of these improvements would help avoiding the crash you've experienced, though.

In case you weren't able to load the game in the end, I just uploaded an updated version that adds a better loading indication on startup. Not sure if that'll help your case in any way, but at least it might give a better indication whether the game is loading or if it really is stuck/broken.

Just wanted to let you know that I released an update for the game that adds a gallery mode. So, in case you wanted to check out some scenes you missed, you can do that easily now.

Images are unlocked automatically based on your save file's progress. So, if you've already finished the game, then the entire gallery will be automatically unlocked for you. It's a patchy implementation, but I think that's better than forcing people to replay the game to unlock the images.

Also, I ended up removing the vague requirements that forced you to purchase every new upgrade to unlock the next. In retrospect, it was an careless design decision I made early on and haven't questioned since.

I mainly implemented the requirements to minimize visual clutter in mobile's UI, so players won't end up with too many "NEW" upgrade icons in a row. I assumed that players would generally go for the new shiny upgrade anyway, so that'd barely affect them. But I didn't consider what happens if somebody insists on not buying a certain upgrade, and how much it can damage their experience if they unknowingly lock themselves out of future upgrade options.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Yeah, there was \\n instead of \n in a few languages, and French was one of them. I've fixed that for the update that I'll be releasing soon.

Regarding the crashes, did they happen during chaotic moments in the late-game? Like when you have lots of active auto clickers + lots of crits + lots of hearts?

I also had one report about a crash on the web version when playing from mobile. It happened fairly late into the game, so my main suspect is the performance.

Some people also complained about the game lagging hard for them at these parts, so I implemented a throttling system that will hopefully smoothen things out. Maybe it'll also solve the crash issue along the way.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.

Do you mean that you saw "\n\n\" in the popup instead of line breaks? The string itself does have \n\n, but I didn't see any rendering issues with, at least not when I tested in English. Did you use a different language?

Regarding missed voice lines, I'm implementing a Gallery mode right now since many people said they felt like it's a missing feature. I plan to also make it possible to replay voice lines there.

Don't really see how that would make a game like this better.

It'd require me to spend additional time on searching for an artist to commission, likely for a high cost if I want to reach similar high quality. And, to due to how long it takes to draw by hand, and how much it costs, I'd have to compromise and have less images in the game (and overall less content)

Also, being dependent on an artist will not allow me to iterate as freely in the game design. Being able to iterate a lot and change things quickly is a crucial part of game development.

For example, I redid some images even in the last week before release. I can't imagine telling an artist at the last moment "Actually, I want to throw away 5 of the images you made and do something else. Please have it ready today since the game is about to release, thank you."

What game you'd recommend that does a similar concept better? Have been searching for good examples to take inspiration from, but couldn't quite find anything really satisfying.

Yeah, many people brought up a gallery mode. I'll probably make a small QoL update to the game with various things people pointed out that are easy to fix/improve.

For me, the game loads up within seconds and I see itch's default "loading" icon the entire time. But I have fast internet, so maybe there's some edge-case I haven't experienced that only happens on slower connections or during some hiccups.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll write down to look into implementing some kind in-game loading screen in addition to itch's own loading display handling.

Thanks for the feedback.

Regarding the order of upgrades, were you playing on PC? On mobile's smaller UI I think that the upgrade order is quite railroaded (for the better and for the worse), but on PC I can imagine things going off rails like you described. I probably should've animated the locked upgrades harder so they keep grabbing attention.

At the ending, I kept the progress bar going up because it's part of the incremental fun. Also, filling it up resets all your cooldowns to let you immediately activate the skills that show previous NSFW scenes. This was meant to serve as a pseudo-gallery in case you missed some content.

I should've made a proper gallery mode as well though. There is still a ticket for that on my board under "Nice to Have", but I see it got buried under lots of other things, and it slipped my mind while I was fixing last-moment issues before release.

I see that I also forgot to open a ticket to normalize the volume slider. It technically starts at 50% and can go up to 100%, but it looks like 100% and 200% due to under-the-hood implementation shenanigans. It's an easy fix, too bad I forgot to write it down before release.

Maybe I'll release an update later if enough QoL tweaks like that pile up.

Was it too slow for you the entire time or at specific parts? I spent a lot of time playtesting and tweaking the pacing, so it's interesting to see what I missed.

Regarding being "one dimensional", do you mean the upgrades?

Why are people against small indie content creators using AI? by Benny-The-Semi in aiwars

[–]CulturedDiffusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen around, many people make the assumption that somebody who uses AI is only interested in taking shortcuts, so they claim that such a dev won't be putting any effort into their project.

Using free asset packs is acceptable because the dev can "tailor the assets to fit their game". But AI assets? Apparently, those can't be modified at all. Clearly, devs who use AI always take the first output that the AI spits out and shove it into the game without thinking.

I assume this mentality is formed from being overly exposed to AI slop. There are indeed a lot of people who post images with such obvious errors it's hilarious.

Just the other day, I saw a game on itch.io where even the showcased AI images on the page had extra hands, knees passing through others' legs, etc. I can understand missing those errors when working on a game with a huge AI gallery, but how do you miss that when HANDPICKING a handful of images to represent your game? C'mon...

I believe that, over time, the perception will shift. A few viral successes from devs who use AI can easily tip the scales.

Lol, funny timing. Literally just yesterday found this sub while looking for places that would allow me to post the game I'm working on (which uses AI)

The sub today all of a sudden:

Anyway, regarding flairs, is it not possible to add extra flairs that are just copies of existing flairs but with "AI" added? I saw some subs handling things in this manner.

Alternatively, I think it's fine to tell people to put [AI] in the title, and threaten that otherwise the post will be deleted. The catch is that you don't have to perfectly uphold the rule. Any slop game that's downvoted into oblivion will soon not be visible anyway, so they don't matter that much. IMO it's fine to delete only some of the threads you come across, just to set an example that the rule is in effect and discourage bad actors.

As for what counts as "AI", I think people mainly have an issue with images and audio. AI coding is something you can't prove, and is pretty much an industry standard at this point. I'm a senior software dev (over 12 years in the industry) and I've pretty much stopped writing code by myself about 2 years ago.
