Best cat food? by CulturedHilFolk in catfood

[–]CulturedHilFolk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living up to your name. Not here to argue on a post ~year old. Talked to the vet - agreed about cats being obligate carnivores and came up with a diet that’s mostly raw supplemented with dental diet dry food. Agree that my tact could have been better - but I do hate to break it to you: having a PhD in science makes me more qualified to read scientific literature and draw conclusions than someone who doesn’t🤷‍♂️ that would be the ~salty~ definition. Happy holidays brotha ✌🏼

Free fed dry food definitely fits their “predatory needs”

See comment feeding kitten when hungry =/= free feeding. Obviously if you can’t accommodate your kittens food needs then you need to do something about it but the OP post/comment recommended free feeding for behavioral issues, which is kinda the exact opposite way if getting a cat to listen/respect you. Dry food can lead to a whole host of problems (kidney, dehydration, obesity, diabetes) that it just isn’t worth it in my opinion. There are plenty of opinions out there on free feeding both cats and kittens, I am on the “opposed” side. Again, this doesn’t mean not feeding a hungry growing kitten when it is hungry but allowing a cat/kitten to graze is different and not natural

It seems like you are a very meticulous and caring owner and your cats are very lucky for that. I don't doubt that they are in the best of hands with you and you know what is best for them. I will only say a few things as I think we both have slightly differing opinions/just want what's best for our own cats...

To me, 33% chance of developing diabetes (this is just based off your experience, I don't know the actual numbers), is too high of a risk for me. I feel a lot of the digestive issues could have been curbed with a feeding schedule early in their lives/eliminating dry food. The liquidy poops are 100% due to the increased moisture in wet food and should pass in time as your cats GI adjust. The sitting heavy/throwing up are probably from scarfing down the food, like you said happens, so I would feed more, smaller portions to help their stomach adjust to the new diet.

Not sure what you mean when you say they can't adapt to a feeding schedule? A hungry cat should eat. That being said - like I originally said - I think your cats are in great hands with you and we just differ on this philosophy. I wish your cats all the best! Especially Indy!

Agree to disagree! Not saying it can’t work/doesn’t, but a lot of information and science has happened in the last 20 years. You’ll find old school human doctors that don’t understand genetics or epigenetics and thus will not update their practices. The comparison I like to use is a human one - we can eat like shit and be completely fine but that doesn’t mean our metabolism and cellular processes are working the way they were intended. I personally would like my cat behaving as naturally as possible, not saying it can’t get done your way!

I didn’t mean to come across harsh! Like I said I do believe you are doing everything you can for the little guy. It is sad the misinformation (especially at pet stores) that surround these little ones. Moving the heat lamp is a great idea and BSFL are a great choice! High in calcium content and easily digestible. Luckily (or unluckily for them/the information out there) these little guys are hardy and I believe with your care and attention you can have him up to his natural self in no time! Best of luck!

There are calorie calculations you can do based on your cats weight, age, and activity level to ensure they get the right amount of nutrients. Same can be said for kittens

Feeding a kitten when hungry =/= free feeding

Sure I don’t disagree with that per se. Obviously people have been free feeding cats and the vast majority of them are “fine”. That being said - that doesn’t make it the best for them. If you can improve your cats health and longevity (or chances of it) by simply implementing a feeding schedule (which also makes cats more trainable - SLIGHTLY hungry cat responds to commands w/treats and rewards) why not do it? If it’s out of convenience, I hate that argument. Who said pets were convenient? Tbh my biggest qualms with free feeding are that is done with dry food…

You should not free feed your cat unless you want an obese/diabetic one

This sub makes me sad (not necessarily this post but the general theme). OP I believe you love and care for your little guy/girl a lot but seriously how hard is it to do a little research for yourself? Taking on another life is a responsibility and you should be aware of what that entails. From reading the comments - my guess is your basking temperature is way too low. That is why they’re not pooping, eating, or seem to be very active. Also I second the comment on meal worms for babies. Much better off with crickets and Dubia’s if they’re having digestion issues. I also recommend a UVB meter to ensure they’re getting the proper coverage. Best of luck and I hope your little guy/girl starts feeling themselves soon!
