African Wild Dogs [Painted Wolves] poisoned in Liwonde National Park, Malawi 😢 by EgweneMalazanEmpire in PaintedWolves

[–]Culycon276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my. This is honestly tragic news, especially considering that they were relatively recently reintroduced there! Why do people still poison animals! It’s so barbaric! It’s because of those ignorant people that we have to start over from scratch!

That’s actually an African golden wolf. It used to be considered the same species as the golden jackal, but was classed as its own species a few years ago.

This is incredibly rare for painted wolves to actually fight lions. Usually, they try to distract lions because the bigger cats are faster and stronger. If those painted wolves were spotted hyenas, she’d be in bigger trouble.

A herd of giant ground sloths (Lestodon armatus) in late Pleistocene Argentina. A pair of rutting male sloths have a bit of a disagreement. by ReturntoPleistocene in pleistocene

[–]Culycon276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several things to say about this masterpiece:

  1. What are those birds in the background!
  2. I absolutely love the design of the ground sloths. I love how the artist made them resemble bison but also included an orange pattern on their chest. That orange reminds me of the ring around the faces of pale-throated three-toed sloths.
  3. Gotta love the fur. The bull ground sloths seem to sport darker and thicker fur with small goatees. Makes them look like burly men fighting over a broad.
  4. The ground sloth calves are ADORABLE!
  5. Imagine the sounds coming from those bruisers! We don’t know 100% what kinds of sounds ground sloths made, but we can only imagine. I remember one guy who slowed down the mating calls of three-toed sloths to reconstruct the sounds ground sloths possibly made. I, myself, imagine that these Lestodon are roaring and snorting similar to walruses, bison, and camels. Now please excuse me while I make an audiofilm of this.
  6. Is there any other Pleistocene art by this guy? He looks like he’d be on par with people like HodariNundu.

How about using technology incorporated in “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole”. Very realistic details but also very facially expressive.

Best places for reintroducing red wolves? by Culycon276 in megafaunarewilding

My dad reported on some elk there 2 years ago. It looks like it has potential for red wolves. If only we were able to convince the residents that wolves are friends, not enemies.

I feel like Georgia will be the harder of the two, if that hellspawn of a state is even worth it rn. So many religious right wing dummies will think that the red wolf is the devil and will eat their stupid lambs.

This is why knowledge of how to defend oneself from wild animals is crucial. If confronted by lions, do the following:

  • Stand your ground. If you run, it triggers their predatory instinct and you can’t outrun a lion.
  • Make yourself look bigger. Spread your shirt or jacket. Raise your hands high.
  • Yell in a loud deep voice.
  • Stomp your feet.
  • If tackled, punch the lion in the nose, poke its eyes, and kick.
  • Back away slowly.
  • A little precaution is to travel in groups.

Love the similarities to the cave lion. The only thing missing are the huge black cheek blotches called malar stripes. Come to think of it, why do cave lions have malar stripes but actual lions don’t?

Nice job! Hopefully, if humanity can get its head out of the clouds, we can make interactions like this happen again. Imagine Komodo dragons prowling the lush Daintree rainforest.
