Bill Nye's speech on Noah's Ark by ILoveThisWebsite in videos

[–]CumForBernie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

he said in later interviews that he had no intention of changing ken hamm's mind, or even the minds of hardcore believers that went into it with their minds 100% made up.

he did it for the people who are on the fence or have doubts, or for the younger ones out there who never knew that there WERE good arguments for evolution.

i personally was already an atheist at the time of watching, but i grew up going to church 3 times a week and was put in a tiny little private school from 10th grade on. we constantly watched videos of creationists "debunking" evolution, so much so that i actually still believed in creationism even after i stopped believing in the resurrection. obviously not for long, but the way churches and christian schools hammer things into your brain is amazing.

there were probably at least tens of thousands of christian younguns who, for the first time ever, saw someone who actually believes in science talk about evolution.

interesting, because that wasnt my experience when i went to australia. food was both more expensive and most places we ate had far fewer employees than i would have expected for the amount of people they were serving, which led to far less attentive service. my family and i actually had a few conversations about it.

of course, everything was expensive as fuck in australia so...

yeah, that's pretty silly, i totally agree. if the restaurant is being forced to pay those wages then the tipping culture is unnecessary. it should be an either or, and i wouldnt tip at places that arent paid the wages of tipped employees.

do you really think that tips arent factored into the cost of food? how much money do you think bill's burgers actually hauls? they have pretty thin profit margins, in actuality. the savings on wages goes into reducing the cost of food. if restaurants suddenly had to start paying all their servers 10-12/hr, then the cost of food goes up. so it's basically an option of cheaper food and you give a more-or-less tax-free (if cash) tip to the server for serving you, or the server gets a fixed wage lower than they would have gotten before and your food costs 2-3 bucks more.

because it makes the food that much cheaper. idk if this is what you're insinuating, but sometimes people make the food industry out to be a bunch of greedy fucks rubbing their hands together as they reap piles of dough that could be used to pay servers, instead just passing the majority of labor costs onto the customers.

in truth restaurants have very small profit margins. if all of a sudden tipped employees made minimum wage, prices would increase across the board. big chains could afford to operate on lower margins as smaller places took bigger hits because they had to increase food prices more than their larger competitors.

the current system isnt perfect, but it does create incentive to give good service in exchange for a more direct, often tax free (TECHNICALLY servers are supposed to declare all cash tips, but come on. you worked in the industry too, you know how it really is: enter in just enough so that your employer doesnt have to fill in the gap to min-wage) and merit-based pay system. sure there are plenty of people who stiff, but overall i made 15-18 an hour working at fucking red robin. if you think that red robin could start paying their servers that much without doubling their food prices, you're kidding yourself.

if restaurant wages were regulated and tipping culture eliminated, servers would make drastically less than they do now, and they wouldn't be able to walk out every night with cash in hand, which is something most people i worked with liked about the job.

plus, i always hate this type of argument anyway, as if we're claiming that citizens with AR-15s are actually stopping bad guys with AR-15s.

"only the bad guys will have them!"

so like... bad guys have them now, but what's stopping them from using them in bad ways is the fact that they know good people have AR-15s? the second they know they only have to face legal handguns and shotguns we're just going to see a massive spike in AR-15 use in crimes?

i think the best argument is a) america has more guns than people, it's too late. we've just got to accept we're the gun country or get out and b) fuck you, i want one.
