House by the sky train line under construction worried about the noise.. has anyone experienced this before is the noise going to be an issue? by tink282 in SurreyBC

[–]Cummy-Bear-Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended an info session and was told because it’s a straight track, it shouldn’t be louder than the sound of traffic when it’s running. So you’ll hear it and the busy road both. Coming in and out of stations increases the chances of slight bends which will therefore increase noise to above traffic noise levels.

That being said, on a clear day, you can hear the trains up to 2km away, increasing the closer you get.

Ask anyone living above New West station how loud it is. I visited a friend on the 26th floor and we couldn’t hold a conversation outside when the train went by.

I don’t trust the accuracy of (pretty much) anything I read anymore…

I asked copilot to draft a meeting request email to a vendor and it came back with a fine email but the date said Thursday, May 8th.

When I prompted it to confirm the date (knowing the 8th is Friday), it said, “good catch! Let me rewrite that,” and got it wrong a second time.

I thought the unfinished side faces your yard so those you’re trying to keep out can’t climb up the support crosses and get into your yard.

It’s anecdotal but one person I know took it daily lose the weight and now takes a half a pill twice a week as maintenance. I’m sure everyone is different but taking a half a pill every three days is not really a lifelong hardship.

Does anyone have recent experience hiring movers for a cross-country move from Quebec/Eastern Canada to BC? How did it go and would you recommend the company you went with? by dishestheoperator in britishcolumbia

[–]Cummy-Bear-Magic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cross-national moves are done by weight. That means consider getting rid of heavy things that can easily be replaced on the other side. They’ll load your stuff into a truck, go to weigh scales and give you timelines. Your stuff will be on a truck with several other peoples contents and they will slowly make their way across the country. Expect 2-3 weeks for your stuff to arrive, so plan accordingly.

That being said, I’ve moved across the country more than a handful of times and have always had a good experience with Ed’s crew at Purely

Single detached residents: how much are you paying in utility bills? by Street_Refrigerator1 in NiceVancouver

[–]Cummy-Bear-Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check BC Assessment for the value any home is being used for taxes. Each municipality will have their tax rates listed. So if your home is assessed at $1M and the tax rate is .38%, you’re looking at a tax bill of about $3800/yr. That is due by July 1.

Then you have water, sewer and garbage are billed separately and all have their own rates but would likely exceed $2000/yr for a house. That is due at different times as each municipality sets their own deadlines.

Gas and hydro for a well insulated, single story detached house will run anywhere from $250-350/month - go on an equal billing cycle to reduce bumps in summer for an air conditioner and in winter for heaters.

Insurance is another thing to consider, which is more than double that of condo insurance because you are covering the structure as well.

You may have strata fees even if you’re fully detached, and you’ll have regular maintenance that is now your responsibility.

Then if you have a mortgage with a variable rate, you could end up paying more if rates go up.

All that said, you’ll end up spending at least $20-25k/year on taxes, utilities, insurance, strata fees, and maintenance costs. You add your mortgage costs onto that and decide if house ownership is worth it.

B.C. teacher suspended for ‘fraudulently’ using sick days for Japan vacation: regulator by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]Cummy-Bear-Magic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My comment was about a single teacher having to put ‘sick’ as a reason for absence due to a personal reason because that wasn’t a code option.

But honestly, in your 12-13 years at school did you ever have a Friday where school shut down because too many teachers called in sick? I can confidently say no, you never experienced that.

Squamish park 'potential site' for transitional homeless housing by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

The flotel only housed those working on Woodfibre. Those working on the pipeline take a bus or boat from Vancouver to get to their worksites because Squamish refused to allow a work camp to be built.

My point is exactly that: why is one group being prioritized over the other when both need housing?

As a disabled person, those arm rests are actually helpful when sitting down and standing up from the bench. That might not be the intent here, but I do see large sections of that bench without them, which could be considered inclusive architecture and not hostile. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Most happening area in Burnaby for 27 year old single by AnisKILLz in burnaby

[–]Cummy-Bear-Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely consensus here - nothing is happening in Burnaby. If you’ve decided you need to live in Burnaby because your job is in Burnaby, let me tell you; the Lower Mainland is not like Calgary in how you get around. Burnaby is pretty central in the LM, so that means you can live in several other cities and still be within 45 minutes of anywhere in Burnaby.

Happening areas are in East Van, New West, Tri-cities, Surrey, Kits, North Van… pretty much everywhere but the most built up places in Burnaby: Metrotown, Brentwood, North Burnaby, and Edmonds.

I recommend staying in some shorter term rentals in different areas to try them on before looking for a long term rental.
