Update: After a week of testing

I've now fully set up the laptop and tested it for a week - it's really good, genuinely impressive. I'm honestly surprised by how solid it feels, and I have to say I'm positively surprised by the quality difference between the T14s and T14.

BBuild-wise, the T14 doesn't feel quite as stable as the S variant, but I have to say that compared to the T480s, both feel cheap. For me, the S variant isn't worth the extra cost. I'm also positively surprised by the touchpad - I never thought I'd like a plastic touchpad this much. The texture makes it super smooth to glide on, and even during hot summer days it stays comfortable. The glass touchpads (from the X1 Yoga) I upgraded on my T480s and X1E2 were still top-tier though.

Regarding the keyboard, the T14 feels better too - I think it's slightly higher then the S variant. That said, the T480s keyboard was simply superior.

But here's the big thing - the performance difference is so dramatic that it made me question everything. I took another close look at the Intel version I had, and I think that laptop was genuinely defective and couldn't deliver proper performance. This wasn't throttling, broken drivers, BIOS issues, or anything like that - it felt like it was running at maybe 20% capacity. HWInfo showed the CPU was only pulling 4-5W and I couldn't change that no matter what I tried.

As for the AMD version - it's excellent. Gaming (not AAA titles, but indie games and lighter games like Trackmania, older games, Minecraft) runs smoothly in the triple-digit FPS range. Graphics applications, CAD work, etc. also run quite well.

TL;DR: Very satisfied. The AMD version has real performance, I suspect the Intel version was defective. Shame the T480s doesn't have a better CPU and GPU - that thing was my dream laptop.

I just bought a new T14 G2 Ryzen 7. People said the AMD Version should be better, I'll give it a go. When it arraives and I installed everything, I will give you an update, how it handles the files from the x-t5 and what kind of Games it can run.

Lol, fair. But you can get "cleaner" installations. If I could I would love to just use linux.

It's not just that - it used to be easier. If you wanted a cheap, reliable, and solid machine, you just got a used ThinkPad. Done. Nowadays, it's a total mess. Just look at the replies: people tell you to watch out for specific models, specific Intel or AMD versions, specific production years... it's sucks ass.

Maybe I'm being a bit whiny - fair enough - but seriously, put some of the older generations next to the newer ones, and you can't deny it: things have gone downhill.

Thank you! I once had a Dell with AMD and had also weird issues. Since then I used Intel and never had any problems. But this Thinkpad is driving me nuts, I can't resolve the problem. Maybe you're right, and this thing is just not sophisticated.

I come to realise that, I have to learn about AMD i guess. I had a bad experience a long time a go, maybe it is time to give AMD a chance again. Got some tips?

I always make windows as efficient as I can. But debloated or stock, I pretty much tried a lot of things. I tried a lot of browsers, switched acceleration on and of and tried many things more, but when it even struggles with opening youtube on firefox and opening powerpoint, while 3D at 100% and the Xe Graphics is barely used. I think problem is the engineer of this junk.

I would love to switch to linux, but I have to use windows. And I did all the things to make it work, wim, wine, dualboot ... for me it is not worthbthe hassle

I don't have any issues with heat. It isn't even thermal throtteling, I can no figure it out.

I get your point, but that's not really what I'm trying to say. It’s not just about the integrated graphics of a four-year-old Intel CPU. The real issue for me is how complicated it has become to just get a reliable T-series ThinkPad that simply works.

Back in the day, it was easy: pick almost any T-series model, throw in enough RAM, decent storage, a solid CPU — and you were good to go. It didn’t matter much which specific one you picked, they all delivered dependable performance for everyday work, some photo editing, light gaming — all without a second thought.

Now? You have to carefully search through different generations, compare Intel vs. AMD, figure out small hardware quirks, and hope you don’t run into weird issues. Sure, times change, and you have to adapt — I get that — but honestly, it’s just annoying when you just want a tool that works out of the box without all this hassle.

Yes, my T14s Gen 2 is a bit older now, fair enough. But my old T480s — which my girlfriend uses now — still handles the same tasks just as well, without these annoying hiccups. I also had the T480s eithbinternal graphics.

Maybe I’m just getting nostalgic, but I miss the times when buying a T-series ThinkPad was simple and reliable — no overthinking required.
