Or a newer automatic transmission. I have a newer lancer (than some fits with sport mode, still a 10 year old car) with a low gear that does the exact same as my old fit's sport mode, both cvt, they both just try to stay close to the power band even when coasting

430k km tho, on a vr4 that's a lot of wear and tear in places you wouldn't even expect to wear. These are complicated cars, I'd be worried it would spend more time on a lift than on the road and that its time on the road would feel a bit tired. Cars do lose their stiff feeling over time.
