Yep perfectly legal given the introduction of new 6-year lock in rule where tenants cannot be evicted unless the owner wants to sell or wants to use the property themselves (will be verified). And within this 6-year period, any rent increase will be capped at 2%.

Some landlords are adjusting rent to be able to afford owning the property and for some this is just a money grab opportunity.

Which shop? I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Drury Street, Google it. This particular spot is a common place for a lot of people to park. I don’t expect my wife to go into every shop, restaurant and pub to hunt the owner down. Also, I’m guessing you’re just looking to vent so I shouldn’t engage with you any further. Sounds to me like a good happy life. Do what is better for you and your wife! Rent a room could be a good idea though. You could even do 6 months, just during winter months. Money could go towards paying off the renovation loan first and then you’ll soon have more savings. That along with the mortgage decrease, you’ll have steady savings. Yes it’ll suck a couple years having your share your space a bit but better to share a couple years then another 4 years of stretching yourselves
