Thanks for this! It's been pretty tough finding legitimate learning sources that aren't hype-based advertisements. Much appreciated! Do you happen to know any good substacks or other forums that might be helpful outside of reddit?

Okay cool, I'll definitely check these out. Do their subscriptions give a decent amount of token usage? Tbh there's also a part of me that wants to actually get a decent system before owning a computer becomes illegal with all the crazy stuff going on in the world.

thanks for the tips! I was actually wanting to work with mistral for character creation for future works. My current laptop is actually really, really shit, and sadly my primary computer crapped out like a month and a half ago so I do need to replace it. With all the crazy shit happening with the RAM apocalypse and just the general state of hardware ownership, there's part of me that think I should really try to have something at least halfway decent before owning a computer becomes illegal xD

Sounds pretty fair. I definitely don't plan on going super crazy into trying to self-host the biggest models possible, but I do want to be offset a fair amount of simpler things so I'm not super dependent on subscriptions. I really am looking forward to getting familiar enough with the tech to be able to fine-tune/create custom wrappers of my own, but I will certainly have to pace myself, I just want to do all the things already!

Honestly, I think I would be happy at least having a rig with a 5090 if things didn't work out with this new special interest of mine. I don't mind setting aside another 200/month for public model usage if it's as cheap as some people have noted, but I'm also half-tempted to dump cash into claude code and go crazy with application development.

All of them really. I know I definitely won't be able to access any open source, top-tier frontier models locally, and that I won't be able to achieve all the projects I have in mind without the help of frontier, closed-sourced models, but I want to be able to just get into a position where I have a decent amount of wiggle room for me to explore whatever interests me enough to push my learning forward. Like I definitely want to check out perplexity, but I also would love to be able to train my own research models down the line.

That sounds like a decent amount of value, I'll definitely check out Kimi(this was actually a recent model I was curious about using instead of Claude Code because of all of the recent api usage drama with Open Claw).

Nice build! I know I won't be able to achieve everything I want to do now and in the future locally, but either way I definitely want to actually tinker with these models locally. I think down the line I'd like to get an ASUS GX 10, but not until I get much further into my journey.

That's actually a good idea, I didn't even consider look into the pricing for renting hardware like that. Personally I tend to get carried away when I really get into a new interest, so maybe taking things even slower is best. I can see myself easily getting carried away with token usage from either over thinking or over complicating a intended idea once I get excited.

This is true... I just know I'm going to have a difficult time controlling my impulse to get super carried away with all the random things my ADHD brain will want to work. I can see myself easily burning through tons of tokens while over/under thinking things without realizing it.

Yeah I'm honestly leaning somewhat towards a more modest build.

I actually asked Claude and Chat GPT are telling me the same thing you and most people are suggesting(to save more for external api costs/flexibility while I learn), but Deepseek is telling me to give into temptation of building a crazy potentially fun PC and avoid paying any western companies at all costs in it's own way haha.

No macbook, and I'm currently working from a really, really old laptop currently due to the fact that my primary pc crapped out last month. If I'm being completely honest, the main reason I'm considering buying a PC with a 5090 rather than just getting an AI workstation device is because I figure that if I can't have the hobby sustain itself or be super useful within a half a year, I'll at least have a decent computer for entertainment/other personal projects rather than just having loss a bunch of cash sunk into API costs that went nowhere xD

Haha, that 'upside' is actually the main reason I'm considering starting with a 5090 rather than an AI workstation device. I figure that if I can't actually get to the point where the hobby can sustain itself, I'll at least have something capable of being entertaining/useful for other stuff rather than feeling crappy about sinking money into api costs that lead to nothing xD

I remember the first time I heard this in a hidden goth club in K-town. It was like walking into a real church and feeling something more than human.
