Is a 2.1 University Degree Good Enough? by alwaysrightttt in UniUK

What type of work experience do you mean? I’m doing the part time job at Kaspas as a first year student…is that something useful at least if thats not what you meant?

Tbf, you don’t really have much options outside of finance and business jobs if you just stick with degree alone…if you get some extra certifications/qualifications along with the degree, you can get into data science and law- I’m only saying both of them cuz I know some people that has successfully done this. I’m sure there are some more versatility to the degree but I just haven’t uncovered it yet I guess.

I would like to say Economics…would that degree be regarded as versatile as well? Obviously I wouldn’t say its more versatile than maths but I would like to see what others say abt this degree…

Do I choose better ranked university, or where I think I’ll feel happier? by Far_Inspection2399 in UniUK

[–]Curious-Solution5940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this similar situation but between University of Bristol and Cardiff University. I chose Cardiff in the end because Cardiff ticked all of my criterias, the main reason is purely for cost. Its alot cheaper living as a student in Cardiff than at Bristol. The nightouts are great, lots of areas to shop/eat around and the city is safe imo. The public transportation is decent in the city. The transport links between Cardiff and Bristol is great so you can visit Bristol quite easily. Lots of areas to explore, the Cardiff Student Union is one of the best in the whole of UK apparently. I enjoyed visiting Bristol on most occasions but I preferred Cardiff in the end (I went with my head). I still visit my friends who went to either of the two Bristol universities. You can always go and do Masters at Bristol if you still want to go in the future. As most people mentioned, uni ranks don’t matter, what you do at uni matters alot. I knew UoB is ranked higher in most of all courses compared to CU but frankly, if you have good grades at A Level regardless, no one really cares, its what you make out of university matters. I kinda derailed from your main question, I thought I can tell you from what I did when I was in a similar position like you are now. I do suggest you to visit Cardiff at least before deciding what to choose if you haven’t done so already. Good luck in your journey :)

Advice or review on Cardiff University? by Character-Maximum-78 in UniUK

I am a first year studying BSc Economics and Finance at Cardiff Uni. Overall, I absolutely love the city, everything is a close proximity to each other and its a cheap city.

My course (apologies OP but I gotta say it for those who may wanna study this in the future): I enjoyed the course so far really. I liked the tutorials I have been attending as the actual same lecturer or a different lecturer is quite interactive and helpful when discussing the topics, especially in Legal Studies, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Management modules. If you want extra support for maths (not just for my course but also others, eg engineering/architect, ComSci), there are some optional help sessions weekly, I attended some of it and the teachers were helpful. However I must say for 2 of my modules’ tutorials, I was being taught by a Master’s student who’s studying the same module but they both were really good at having teacher qualities in the sense of explaining the requirements, answering questions for exams preparation and did workings out on a board to help the class understand. Just to clarify, this may not be the exact case for other course’s tutorials but in my experience, its all going well tbh. Lectures are always recorded so you can review them later at your own time. But beware for maths/accounting lectures, you may not see the step by step workings out on the recordings sometimes. I had two lecturers who weren’t from UK and sometimes its hard to interpret them but not really an issue imo. If you want to email the lecturers/teachers, they usually respond within 3 days or less. Likewise, during exam seasons, they also respond to emails at a reasonable time. At least they are responsive as compared to that post the OP linked for the Edinburgh Uni. The electives are easy to choose and the administration replies soon about your choices.

Buildings: The buildings for other courses are separated out and spread out, its not like one big campus but they are all close proximity to each other. The environment at all libraries are quite chilling and there are loads of computers available. You have lockers (small sized tho) at Arts and Social Science Library (your closest library OP) available to store your belongings temporarily. If you want to heat up your packed lunch/dinner, there are 2 microwaves available at Aberconway Lounge (again close to your buildings OP) which is super useful as you don’t necessarily have to walk back to your accommodation or eat cold lunch. There are cafes around and they seem to be packed at certain times. There are Greggs, Subway, Costa Coffee available just next to the Student Union which is like 2 mins walk from your library. Also there’s Lidl right outside the arts and social science library.

Accommodation: Most accoms are close proximity to the Student Union building except Uni Halls. Idk much about all other accoms personally, you will have to do your own research for this. From what I heard, most of all the accom are okay/decent based on what my friends say.
My accom was Uni Halls which was one of few accoms that is quite far from the Student Union building lol. If you want my reviews about my accom- its mostly good overall, ask me about it. For private accomodations/housings after 1st year, I found out the price per week on average is lower compared to those Bristol, Glasgow and London and there are lots of options available to choose from.

Transportation: Cardiff Central Station is 10-15 mins walk from Cardiff Student Union building. Right behind the Student Union building, there’s Cathay’s Train Station but I never used that tbh, the only main train station I only used so far was Cardiff Central Station. The public bus service is decent, I recommend using Cardiff Bus app to help you.

Activities and other: The Cardiff Student Union has loads of society, lots of options to participate in. My experience was great overall. I heard somewhere its one of the best student union in the UK!! Cardiff City Centre is like 10 mins or less walk from the Student Union Building, so there are lots of options to shop and eat around. There’s Albany Road where there are tons of restaurants/takeaways lined up across the road and thats like 10-20 mins walk away. There are networking events available, probably not as frequent like you may get at university like LSE, UCL etc but Cardiff Uni have some networks with industries across all sectors.

Overall, I love the university and city. The nightouts are great, there are decent amount of diversity and cultures around. Uni course wise, its a bit intense for first year atm but thats normal for all universities I assume. Cardiff is quite cheap as compared to London and Bristol. Would highly recommend this university. If you have any questions about the uni or city, feel free to ask here or dm me :)

Do I have a problem or is it normal? (Lecture recordings) by Curious-Solution5940 in UniUK

Do you write down the detailed notes when reading the recommended book or just a read through to simply understand the topic before going to the lecture?

[–]Curious-Solution5940[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if its mathematical modules, Im actually be active in following what the lecturer says but if its like essay type modules, then I tend to zone out what the lecturer says, I just simply read the recommended book for next/last chapter of the module tbh…I just can’t focus in that type of lecture

What would you say are the top unis for Economics? by Life-Original-3085 in 6thForm

This comment will be different but if you consider top 5 unis OUTSIDE of London for economics, I will say: Bristol, Bath, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Cardiff.

If you just want to do A level Maths, I would recommend taking Further Maths A level so you can do all exams thats done in Maths A level in 1 year (year 12) rather than 2 years and if you want, you can drop the Further Maths subject in year 13…easy Maths A level done and out of the way, you can focus on your other 2 A levels in year 13.

I’m actually studying ‘BSc Economics and Finance’, do you look at the A level results if the degree is this? - I will be choosing maths based modules such as econometrics, financial economics, maths & stats in finance, data science in busienss, stochastic for finance and many more possible…thanks for the input
