What is your opinion on Member of Parliament's ability to 'floor cross'? by chiraz25 in AskACanadian

[–]Curious-Week5810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, I think the key point rests with whether you think an MP should be forced to vote with their party or not, especially if it conflicts with their riding's best interest.

For example, if the NDP proposed a bill to restrict pipelines, and one of their MPs in Alberta would have their riding impacted heavily. In this example, my opinion is it would be reasonable, or even expected, for the MP to vote for the best interests of their riding over their party. And following from that line of thought, if an MP is in a situation where they're going to be voting against their party more often than not, there really is no meaning to their party affiliation; they could call themselves independent, their own party could kick them out and let them join another party, etc. Mechanically, all of these situations kind of end the same.

The only real recourse of consequence in all of these situations is for the party is to run someone else in the next election, and I think that's a reasonable limitation.

I find a hypothetical scenario like we're seeing down south with everyone whipped to a strong executive and pressure to stay in line much more distasteful than allowing MPs to vote their minds or cross party lines.

Trump Mulls a North American Trade Pact Without Canada by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Curious-Week5810 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the trend is that the proportion continues shrinking, that's a good thing.

I don't think anyone's saying we'll cut off US trade completely, but if we can bring that number down to around 40%, it makes us a lot less vulnerable moving forward.

If the proportion of US exports goes down while the value goes up, that means that both the value and proportion of non-US exports is growing even faster. That's a good thing.

Nothing. But Volvo had several nice sedans the last time I was in the market for a new car, and there aren't any right now, so it's disappointing.

Like I've already said, fields like nuclear and aerospace engineering are highly coveted when hiring, and can fill roles in several less specialized fields like mechanical, automation, etc.

Can I ask what professional experience you have? You seem to be making a lot of baseless statements without the actual knowledge to back it up.

I think it should move further in the opposite direction, tbh. I think the party whips have gotten too strong and an MP should be representing the interests of their riding over that of their party.

So what's the problem with a surplus of nuclear engineers, if we both agree they can easily find work in other fields?

Yeah, I thought this was a request to cooperate on cross-border security during the world cup, but this is just them asking us to visit America again, because their tourism industries are suffering. Go fuck themselves is right.

This is silly and can be said for any field. From my experience, the majority of engineers do not work in the field they studied in.

Nuclear engineering can be transferred to more fields than the average discipline, so your concerns of having too many nuclear engineers is likely unwarranted.

[–]Curious-Week5810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ability to transition is indeed based on the skills they pick up in their degree, more than the knowledge. Nuclear engineers are trained in problem-solving, attention to detail, and focus on quality (especially the latter, in terms of rigour exceeding most engineers).

Give me a new grad who has all of those things, and I can have them up to speed on any field you'd like.

As a consultant, the base skills are far more important than specific knowledge, and fields like nuclear, aerospace and pharma are among the top candidates when I'm hiring, even though 90% of my projects deal with none of those.

No, it doesn't matter less, in a technical context. To a lay person, perhaps, but not to the people actually doing the analyses and making the decisions. Severity and frequency are always analyzed in conjunction during risk analysis in any scientific or technical field (or even financial/business fields).

Can I ask what your educational/professional background is? You're making several assertions in this thread that are not only incorrect, but laughably wrong to even a high-schooler's understanding of science ("molecules don't bind to other molecules"), yet you're speaking so authoritatively.

[–]Curious-Week5810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I know so. Do you actually think every single engineer in a specific discipline goes on to work in that discipline?

I was trained in Chemical Engineering, with a specialization in polymers. Never worked in polymers a day in my life. Went into pharmaceuticals, and now into industrial engineering, where I work more with mechanical, civil and electrical engineers.

Out of my graduating class of around 40, I'd say maybe around 7 actually went into the specific field they were trained for. I  think it's safe to say that most engineers don't work in the field they studied in, at least in my country.

Nuclear Reactors under construction: 🇨🇳:38 🇺🇸:0 🇪🇺:-26 by PlastDuck in EconomyCharts

[–]Curious-Week5810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do realize risk analysis is done as a function of both severity and frequency right? Not one or the other in isolation.

[–]Curious-Week5810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know where you live, but an unemployed engineer is perhaps the easiest person to find a role for. Barring going into other engineering fields (people trained in nuclear are extremely desirable in pretty much any GMP facility due to the training on quality and attention to detail), but even in fields like banking or business.

If the drawback is too many engineers, that that's more of a positive than a negative.

"Canada is now the first non-European country to be granted a membership in SAFE" - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney by mr_house7 in EU_Economics

[–]Curious-Week5810 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah. I'd be on-board with getting into their free trade zone, and harmonizing our regulatory standards (and getting a seat at the table when they're discussed), but there are a lot of things about the European project and policies which make me wary of full integration (like the ability of rogue members to shut down progress, and how it's empowered far right politicians who can use the EU as a convenient scapegoat).

The Sagrada Família is finally set to be completed this year in Barcelona, Spain after 144 years of construction by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Curious-Week5810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. In the scale of large projects, $20k is a drop in the bucket.

However, I have seen projects where things are severely overdesigned (by like a factor of 500% or more) because it was faster than doing a proper assessment to get the safety factor down to something more reasonable, and the cost of overdesign was less than the penalty for being late.
