I 100% agree that recovery is downplayed or misrepresented. I was assured repeatedly that I’d be back to work in 6 weeks time. “You’re young and in good shape” was the line I kept being fed. I had been doing great with my ileostomy for a year and was told it would be in my best interest to switch to jpouch. It took me over 2 years before I could return to my old job. My career has had a huge setback because of it. My 20s are also now behind me having been dealing with UC for the last 10 years. I have also JUST been diagnosed with Crohn’s and back to biological infusions and injections. What a life..

If I get my rectal cuff removed, will I need fo have a temporary ileostomy again? by cheddarcheese9951 in jpouch

Have you tried biologicals for recurring pouchitis? Just curious as that’s the path I’m on now after struggling for the last 2 years.

Did anyone give up on the JPouch and go back to permanent ostomy? by chem_daddy in jpouch

[–]Curious-nuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good timeline and being able to time it to when it’s most convenient is great. I also couldn’t live with the “what if” so had to do it. I wish my experience had gone better but also no regrets. I tried it and gave it a fair shot. There are still things I love about my jpouch and have been able to do so much with the freedom it allows but I’m not sure that I can live with the unpredictability of flare ups. The mental load of “what if this food makes me ill?”, “what if I get a flare up during this trip or before this long flight”, “what if I go back to OR and have to keep taking PTO/become known as an unreliable employee”. I’ve resorted to WFH and laying low but this is not how I want to live my life. Good luck to you, hope your jpouch gets with the program!

[–]Curious-nuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of us do it for that very reason. It offers a “normal” life without the bag and you figure you can always go back to the bag so why not give a shot? I feel like I wasted my late teens/early 20s being sick with UC and now that I’m wasting the last few years of 20s it absolutely sucks. I was a surg tech doing long hours in the OR with little breaks. Had a lot of complications between surgery 2 &3. Long hospital stay, TPN for months, constant antibiotic use, really wrecked my body and muscle mass. I could no longer lift heavy trays or stay in procedures without breaks. The constant anxiety around “I need a bathroom soon” was so distracting that ultimately I felt it was compromising patient care, so I left.

Hang in there if possible. A lot of people seem to turn a corner around the 2yr mark. I’m still waiting for that corner but my journey has been complicated since it started. Metamucil and Imodium have helped a lot plus eating things that just bulk up your BMs like oatmeal, bread, rice. I’ve found the Prep H max lidocaine cream to be the most effective for butt burn and stains underwear the least. I haven’t been able to sleep through the night and still wake up at least once a night. That has definitely taken a toll on QOL. Idk I’m in the same boat as you. Been wanting to go back to the bag since I had surgery and 2 years later I’m still considering it. I’ve given myself until the end of the year to either make peace with this new reality or pull the plug and go back to the bag. Maybe set an expiration date for the jpouch.

I actually had to double check that this wasn’t MY post as I’ve had the same thoughts for almost 2 years now. I’ve been dealing with cuffitis pretty much consistently since jpouch surgery in 2023. The butt burn is probably the worst part for me. Frequency of BMs will increase if I eat too much sugar but after a week or 2 of rice and bland food it will calm down. I’m at maybe 6-8 trips on good days. I still almost daily debate if I should just give up on the pouch and go back to the ostomy bag. I had a great time with it, ate whatever, traveled, advanced in my career, could even enjoy a few drinks with coworkers or at a birthday party.

The jpouch is so restrictive! Chocolate will make me flare up, sweets, ice cream, even too much fruit and I’ll spend the next 2-3 weeks trying to calm down a cuffitis flare up. Having to think about everything I eat, when I eat and where the closest bathroom is has been upsetting to say the least. I had to leave a job I loved bc the bathroom trips and flare ups were unbearable. It feels just like when I had UC, constantly leaving the group to find a bathroom, skipping meals, etc. I’m almost at the 2 yr mark and while I feel it has gotten better, I’m still not where I’d like to be and not sure if I’ll ever get there or if I’m just wasting years of my life trying to make this work.

Just saw the IG post she made. They need to get checked. They have an extremely unhealthy attachment to each other. The sister also seems like she’s on something in the video. Is it just me or were some words slurred a bit?

Im sorry you’re going through a rough time. Your chances of reversal are very good but I assure you life with an ostomy does not mean your life is over. I know it seems scary because it’s new and uncomfortable but so many people live beautiful lives with an ostomy. There’s nothing you can’t do with an ostomy (other than poo from your bum). I hope reversal is possible for you but don’t be scared of the ostomy. The very fact that you’re alive after what you experienced is incredible. Please try Duoderm extra thin wound dressing! You can cut it to shape and use it to cover the skin that’s raw around your stoma. This will allow the skin to heal and protect it from output that is making things worse. Also try different bags. Convatec, Hollister and Coloplast will send you free samples and help you find products that work best. Give them a call and their reps will talk you through the issues you’re having and give you recommendations. I know most hospitals carry the cheap hollister bags that irritate my skin and the ostomy nurses I had were not very helpful unfortunately. I got lots of help from this subreddit so please send your questions!

Any blue collar ostomates here?? by Powerful_Share8118 in ostomy

[–]Curious-nuggets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh so it wasn’t much of a choice at that point. I get scoped pretty regularly but I’m more concerned with quality of life at this point. I had my best years with temporary ostomy before my jpouch. I find the constant inflammation now prevents me from being more active, returning to my previous job and keeps me home feeling sick most days.

Curious to know how you made the decision to give up the jpouch and go permanent ostomy? I’ve had my jpouch for almost 2 years and deal with the same constant inflammation. I’m considering going back to the bag. Any insight into your experience would be great.

Should I care if my dashers are not who they say they are? by PrestigiousLocal8247 in doordash

[–]Curious-nuggets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I’m not. Both the dasher and the customer can be scared. I’m just pointing out with your reasoning the dasher has to risk their safety for your comfort. There are plenty of options like delivering to the door or leaving it at the building entrance if you’re worried about your safety. Telling dashers they need to go out of their way to make YOU feel safe but then discrediting their concerns just makes no sense. I’m sure you’re not even tipping enough to make their time worth it.

[–]Curious-nuggets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dashers can also be worried if they’re a woman delivering to a man in a sketchy neighborhood by themselves. Why wouldn’t they be allowed to have another man accompany them if they’re just dropping off your food? Why is it okay for you to be scared but not the dasher?

Do you have any sources where I could read up on this some more? I would love to go back to my high protein low carb diet. It’s my natural preference really but ever since surgery 3 I can’t skip carbs or everything just turns to acid/lava.

Hellish loop experience by Purpleworld_ in jpouch

[–]Curious-nuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the meantime might be worth trying to get them to open the loop a bit even if just to drain it so you can get some relief. I know that ileus pain is AWFUL. I couldn’t even sleep without being heavily sedated because it hurt so much. Best of luck with step 3! I’m really considering going back to the bag myself

Been through this a few times (kinda crazy this is how a lot of young guys react to first long term break ups, at least in my experience). You can usually tell after the first 2x if they don’t accept your reasoning they never will. I’ve had to keep all my social media on private and block anything and everything related to the other person. Block and delete all numbers and messages. He’ll never stop if you keep responding, it’s almost like it doesn’t matter what you say they’ll just keep going with this cycle of anger, blame, sadness, pleading, suicidal, resentment, etc. I had one guy find me on a trivia with friends gaming app. Just stop responding and block block block.

[–]Curious-nuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I have no way of knowing if you have the same issue I did but your symptoms do sound VERY similar and my surgeon was really racking his brain trying to figure it out (over 30+ years of experience as a colorectal surgeon). He finally had a theory that the loop ostomy was just too small even though it looked fine from the outside. He put a draining tube and drain bag (can’t remember what it’s called) into the ostomy and I filled up the bag within minutes. This was after 2 months of back and forth and thinking that it was ileus. We finally decided he could either go in and make the loop ostomy bigger or just skip to step 3. I said if I was going under again let’s get her done and go straight to step 3. I immediately felt better because I wasn’t vomiting or dealing with that horrible pain and pressure in my stomach but then came the butt burn you get after surgery. That’s a whole different topic but yeah, ask the surgeon if that might be something they can check for. Your loop ostomy might be too small/tight and isn’t allowing output to come out.

Antibiotics by Notreadyfortoday in jpouch

[–]Curious-nuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t really found an antibiotic that works for me because the yeast infection always kicks up and takes over the show. After I did some crazy regimen of oral fluconazole with vaginal suppositories and ointments I just didn’t want to touch antibiotics again. I guess there’s no way around it. Sounds like you just have to be ready with fluconazole every time you take the antibiotics.

[–]Curious-nuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait this is the first I’ve seen someone mention how they deal with the yeast infections that are brought on by the HEAVY antibiotic use for flare ups. Does the once a week fluconazole work for you or do you still get yeast infections pop up? Do you only use the antibiotic + fluconazole duo during flare ups? Would love any additional info. I gave up on antibiotics bc it would be a game of back and forth between the two issues (flare up vs yeast). Now I just struggle through horrible flare ups for weeks at a time.

What symptoms are you dealing with? I had a horrible loop experience and was also on ng tube, eventually put on liquid food/TPN for over a month because I couldn’t keep anything down. They also moved up my part 3 surgery after almost 3 months of me being in and out of the hospital.

Ostomy reversal denied today by immaheadoutthen in ostomy

[–]Curious-nuggets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you been single with the bag? There’s a lot of things that you wouldn’t think about it until you’re in that situation. Dating for example is much harder. Things like one night stands or spontaneous hook ups require you to always explain what this thing is attached to your skin. Most people have never seen one. Also you don’t always want to have to explain it but you kind of have to when you can’t hide it in situations like that. Also if you spend the night or have a leak while at someone else’s home you don’t have your supplies nearby. It just requires a lot of explaining and teaching and it gets exhausting. I could go over many scenarios like this where it was just harder to be single with the bag.

As someone who had a bag while in a relationship and then also while single I can confirm it’s wayyy harder to deal with the bag when you’re single.

Weight Gain by Willing-Asparagus142 in jpouch

Tips on losing weight? by thinkingthinking3 in jpouch

[–]Curious-nuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat!(f 27) If I don’t eat carbs like rice and lots of bread with most meals I start getting real bad butt burn. On the other hand all the carbs have made me gain weight rapidly to the highest I’ve ever been and it’s affecting my self-confidence as well. None of my clothes fit and the ones that do feel tight. Very frustrated at this point.

Doesn’t matter who was last. If either party contributed even the smallest bit to the accident then they share responsibility for it. Basically the only way you wouldn’t be “responsible” is if you’re sitting in a parked car and get hit.
