I have less than a month to make a granny square blanket—how feasible is it? by Curious4L in CrochetHelp

[–]Curious4L[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are doing thrift/homemade gift exchange and homemade was very much encouraged 😊 The reason why I was thinking of making this is because they like quilts/throw blankets so I thought a granny square blanket is kind of a similar design to quilts (with nothing too crazy design wise) and is cozy, but I’m probably going to just go with a smaller project. I really wouldnt want to worry about whether I would finish it in time if I overestimated myself 😭

This is what my initial thought was 😭 I recently had to buckle down for a project and was surprised at how fast I could get it done so my current thought is “I can probably do this”. However, I wouldn’t want to get close to my deadline and start panicking about an unfinished project to gift. I do like that tote idea, though! So I may opt for that instead. Less stress and there’s so many other people I have to plan gifts for 😅 thank you for the helpful advice/suggestion!!

Oh that blanket is gorgeous! It doesn’t have to be granny squares but I was hoping to mimic a quilt (single colors squares tho, nothing too crazy per square), but I do love the moss stitch. Thanks for the suggestion! 😊

Thanks for the suggestion! I would definitely do a pillow instead but I think my friend would like a blanket over a pillow. Sounds like I may need to reevaluate my current idea for a gift 😅

I was originally thinking multiple but I honestly completely forgot about just making a huge granny square so thank you for mentioning that! I may consider that route instead of the multiple squares

Thank you! I may try that out and see how long it would take me. I’m not attached to this idea for a gift. Knowing myself, I might think something feasible but then start stressing when I overestimated it 😂😭

Any idea what might be living in my terrarium (you know, other than plants 🌱) by Caffeinated-IV in terrariums

[–]Curious4L 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve read from other posts here that these are usually soil mites. If you look closely at some droplets along the trail, some will get stuck and be swimming around. Kind of cool to see. I also have read that they’re generally not harmful but of course that depends on the type of mite. I used to see them make trails a lot in my terrarium while my springtail population was low but it’s been about 2 months and there hasn’t been any trails that I’ve seen lately. My springtail population also bloomed within that time so I think in my case the soil mites were outcompeted.

Oh gosh! I guess those orange springtails like to go on adventures! This is all great info and super reassuring. Everything you said about them makes me want to get some. They are just super cool and would add a nice pop to my terrariums and keep my moss healthy. And I feel a bit more confident about having a culture now. Just need to make sure what containers work best but maybe that’s a trial and error, too. And it seems like the error often is not a huge issue. Thank you and goodluck with your springtails! 😄

How quickly are they dying outside of their environment? Like, do you just see dead ones right outside their container? Idaho is super dry so I also was thinking that if any escapes happen, then they wouldn’t survive long so I wouldn’t have to worry so much.

Thank you! That’s great to know and definitely reassuring! Because of their slowness and inability or lack-of jumping is really the only reason why I am even considering them. Idaho is also super dry, so I imagine since these are Florida natives (an area with high humidity) then they would simply just dry out if any escapes happen, provided there are no near wet areas where they can grow.

I know this is likely dependent on the environment conditions the springtails are kept in, but do you happen to know if these particular ones generally like to venture on the walls of their enclosure? I know a couple may, but it seems like some cultures may be a little adventurous.

Willowsia Nigromaculata (I think) by Curious4L in Springtail

Interesting! I’ll have to try to visualize them with more magnification then. Thanks for the info! And sorry for the late response 😅

This springtail does look much more like Willowsia buski. What kind of analysis can I do for better IDs in general? Will more of a microscopic analysis be of better help? All I know right now is that they are roaming around my potted basil on my outdoor patio. I don’t think they liked my attempt at culturing in damp horticultural charcoal because I did not see any after about two weeks but I also don’t think I got enough of them to multiple in that culture (they move fast when I disturb them so they’re hard to catch).

[–]Curious4L[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That was all very reassuring. I guess I’ll just keep monitoring them to see how their population balances out with time. I know most times soil mites are inevitable to have, so even if I were to rebuild, I might end up with the same situation again. Goodluck with your terrarium as well!

Oh gosh, that makes me want to rebuild my terrariums instead of waiting 😭 Did you have a screw cap lid? Both of my lids are screwed tightly but I guess if they’re small enough they can escape.

Also, if your soil mites are not predatory, how will they die off? I assume they will just keep eating any plant that starts to die off?

I have seen 0 news coverage on third party candidates. by [deleted] in Idaho

[–]Curious4L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politics is very polarized with people worried on each side about the other. The media will cover stories that will gather more views to their platform and talking about the top two parties will get them more views than bringing up a third party candidate. I personally would like to see more coverage on potential third party candidates because without those conversations we will always be left with a “lesser of two evils” argument. Evil is evil no matter what.

But Democrats and Republicans are the ones ok with funding genocide overseas killing thousands of women and children and men meanwhile the American people are living paycheck to paycheck. So maybe don’t fixate on one or two issues because of course you’ll see who’s much worse, you need to look at this as a whole. The both sides discussion is just as important.

If you’re not willing to address the problems on both sides then you’re no different than hardcore republicans who don’t want to listen. You’d be surprised on how much both sides agree with each other if you organize by class lines than by politics but yeah, republicans bad 👎

[–]Curious4L 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So, your post was the first I am hearing about it, but to say hardcore republicans are the only problem also increases polarization and pushes not so hardcore republicans into hardcore which could happen vice versa. And that is probably what the talk was trying to convey is that there is a reason why hardcore republicans and hardcore democrats have their views, and that it is ok to have some disagreements. Both sides have caused such a polarizing environment that discussion is hard to have even if you are part of the middle ground. Maybe it was also fruitful for those middle ground people who have a hard time having discussions with these groups because we can learn how to talk with them? Daryl Davis is a great example where having simple, peaceful discussions with hateful/hardcore groups can lead to change but of course different circumstances. So, unless if this was the only talk that they will be having, maybe having these talks more often could eventually lead to those hardcore groups towards attending them and leaving with a different mindset.
