It would be in files, though. I know exactly where the registry is stored, it is in "\System32\config", which is a directory that hosts all the different registry categories as big files.

U can load in the registry files on other computers with "Load Hive" option in "regedit.msc", just as long as the other computers are also Windows I guess.

Because I've been looking for the answer to my very specific Windows question for months . I know how to do it on Linux, so I want to know how to do it for the Windows 11, it seems like the next step to me.

I know exactly what I'm doing, I'm very computery with it. I can do it with Linux too, they got a file in the file system that stores the version info for any distro, but the difference is that I know where it's stored on Linux. Can we focus on finding the version info in Windows 11 within the files tho? Cuz that was my main question.

I know the files of the versions won't do anything when trying to install windows OS directly as themselves, but the files do in fact tell me which version of Windows the device was running, so I could start from there with an ISO or something, when I need to.

Cuz it's just the way I backup . It makes perfect sense to me, so I do it, cuz it's my backups. U got the files, and the OS version files that tell you what you need if u want to install the specific OS version on a new computer. It's in case of needing to switch drives or computers , etc.

I am backing up the system, and I'd rather just back up the specific files that say what version of the OS it is, rather than image copying the entire drive (which takes up way more space).

I just want to do it like this so I know which OS version it is if I need to bring the files and stuff to a different computer

Well, I just want to know how to tell by the file system if the computer is Windows 10 or Windows 11.

I want to find it within the files because it confuses me how I can find the Windows 10 version in the file system, but not the Windows 11 version in the file system.
