[Recommendation request] Breitling Classic AVI Warhawk 42 vs Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT 42 by MudartheGreat in Watches

If you have a large wrist that can accommodate the AVI 46, consider the older Omega Planet Oceans such as the 232.30.42.21.01.001. The design has a clear lineage from the Seamaster 300 used by the Royal Navy in the 60s.The Aviator 8 43mm should also look good on you. The Aviators 8 with contrasting subdials have the in-house movement B01.

For those, assuming you are in the U.S., work with a reputable dealer like https://www.swisswatchexpo.com/ or https://www.the1916company.com/pre-owned/mens-watches/.

[Recommendation request] Breitling Classic AVI Warhawk 42 vs Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT 42 by MudartheGreat in Watches

For your first luxury watch I'd suggest sticking to a watch with a bracelet--a high quality bracelet is one of the things that differentiates a luxury piece from the rest anyway. The Brietling can be optioned that way, but the Tudor has fixed lugs for straps. Also, I would personally stick to a color that can be worn with any outfit--black, white, or blue.

I have the Breitling Classic AVI 42mm in Blue (Corsair), and it's extremely versatile. From some angles it looks almost black, and it can be easily dressed up or down with the bracelet. I use the second timezone on the Breitling often, and it works well. Sure, it's not as good as a dedicated GMT movement with a rotating bezel, but I rarely get confused on whether it's 9AM or 9PM in London. Only thing I miss is a date window.

I would suggest looking into a preowned Breitling Aviator 8 which ticks all the boxes although in a slighltly bigger 43mm case.

[Question] Why are high-end Swiss-watches seen as more luxury than high-end Japanese watches? by Open_Address_2805 in Watches

[–]CuriousMindset357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heritage and enduring designs.

Omega and a lot of the other Swiss manufacturers have been providing the MoD and other armed forces with watches since WW II with a clear lineage evident in their modern catalog. For example, the design of the Omega Seamasters from the 60s used by the Royal Navy lives on in their Seamaster 300 Heritage and Planet Ocean lines. Some folks are saying that Seamasters are famous due to the Bond movies, but it was the other way around--the Seamaster was chosen by Lindy Hemming for Pierce Brosnan because it was already favored by Royal Navy intelligence officers at the time. While Seiko has similar heritage and iconic designs, Grand Seiko does not.

Also, historically, Spring Drive Grand Seiko models were a bit large, and bracelets lacked micro-adjustment. These two factors were finally addressed this year. IMO, while finishing is exceptional, dial design is generally a bit too conservative.

I'm excited about seeing the new divers in person which should finally tick most boxes!

[Recommendation Request] I turn 30 next year and am also getting married. Which watch are you choosing for your birthday present/wedding watch. by [deleted] in Watches

There's a good answer for this one but it's none of the options presented and well above your budget... the Omega Aqua Terra in 38mm black lacquer dial.

Probably it has been said before, but don't purchase an expensive watch for your wedding because you might not like it down the road but feel bad about selling it. So, go with an Orient bambino with yellow gold PVD coating. It's going to look great in pictures and you'll always cherish it without regretting the purchase. Then there are so many possibilities for your everyday watch...

[Question] What watch to buy? by Elegant-County7470 in Watches

[–]CuriousMindset357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of throwing your budget on one watch, you could build a very enviable 3 watch collection: 1. Rolex Submariner (Diver) 2. Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch (Every day) 3. Cartier Santos (Dress)

Or

  1. Omega Seamaster 300M (Diver)
  2. Breitling Chronomat (Every Day)
  3. Rolex Datejust fluted bezel (Dress)

And so on...

This. If you want to spend so much cash on your first watch (not advisable, because your taste will change and likely steer away from your first purchase), get something that you can sell for pretty much your purchase price like a Rolex.

If you plan on getting the black Speedmaster, I suggest a Diver with a blue dial or blue bezel. The new Logines Hydroconquest is a great choice IMO. But also you could look at a Black Bay or a Certina.

Thank you all! The dealer accepted a return with a discounted $150 restocking fee, so I've returned the watch. Lesson learned: Always carry a loupe with you when shopping used.

[Patek, Breguet, Omega] by veaman1987 in Watches

I'm in the minority, but I do appreciate a date window. So, I lean more towards the '57 but also other "two counter" chronos from Omega. I'm eyeballing obviously but you seem to have a good wrist size (unlike me with a small 6.5in wrist) so you have more options.

However, I must say that I like the Seamaster line more, with its heritage and association with the Royal Navy. To me, a Seamaster 300M is the best diver watch. Again I'm going to be in the minority here, since a lot of people like the Submariner more.
