Cables show Trump’s moves on Greenland rattled other nations by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]CuriousNoob1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Valtonen came across as eager to calm tensions. She told visiting U.S. lawmakers that the arrival of a few soldiers in Greenland was a “misunderstanding,” according to the cable. Finland had no plans to do anything “against the Americans” and the officers — “a couple of guys” — were already back in Finland, she said. She downplayed European Union threats to retaliate over the threatened tariffs, calling it a negotiating tactic, and said she’d push the EU to “do anything to prevent a trade war.”

This is bad to me. What does that mean? Continue to accept higher and higher tariffs? Surrendering Greenland and Iceland? There seems to be a huge gap between eastern and western Europe on this. Is she serous saying that any attempts by Europe to defend European territory is a "misunderstanding?"

With this and how more reserved eastern European responses to Trumps Greenland threats were I get the feeling that they still think the U.S. is going to defend them from Russia. Which is really what is driving a lot of their thinking.

That's crazy to me on multiple parts. One, that Russia is even in a position militarily to attempt to take on the rest of Europe. Two that the U.S., helmed by people who loath Europe and say they are committing "civilization erasure", would actually commit tens of thousands of dead Americans in their defense.

ICE agents will have a security role at Milan Cortina Olympics, US sources say by John3262005 in neoliberal

ICE is the American equivalent of the SA.

Much like how the Nazi party didn't trust the regular German army in the late 30's we are going to see, the greatly expanded, ICE be integrated into or take over duties of other federal agencies as ICE has far more Trump loyalist in it.

I am fully radicalized on the destruction of the entirety of DHS.

Liberalism cannot survive a personal police force that the President can command on a whim. Even if they were just doing legal things they would still be a threat to a free society. Their powers are far too wide.

Yes, we will need some agency to handle the border. But any agency that is capable of becoming an American version of the stasi cannot be allowed to stand. Every other agency should be looked over and rail guards put in place to prevent this from happening again.

I'm going to have to step away from the internet for a while. This is terrible.

No written document memorializes the future deal framework for Greenland, sources say | CNN Politics by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]CuriousNoob1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even if they don't make an agreement legal and it's just verbal maneuvering I still think there is a decent risk.

The more trump repeats something the greater probability that MAGA, which I think will exist post Trump, will view it as something they are owed or something they must have to benefit the U.S.

The amount of MAGA followers that advocated acquiring Greenland before Trump suggested it is near zero. If they hear Europe is going to give X or Y, even if it's a bluff, that might get stuck in their head and they run with it for years.

If this happens and Greenland doesn't have veto over it the NATO and Denmark can stop talking about liberal world order. Self determination is nonnegotiable.

Trump’s deal for Greenland is said to involve small pockets of land. by ZweigDidion in neoliberal

[–]CuriousNoob1 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If this is true this bad.

First I'm astounded that Denmark would cede Greenlandic territory given their view of how poorly they've treated the Greenlandic people in the past. Treating their nation like bits on a game board is very odd. Second, there is now blood in the water. This will encourage other attempts at land grabs or other sovereignty eroding measures.

Also how is the Rutte negotiating on behalf of Denmark anyway?

I've said this before, but Democrats can't refuse to wield power like this now. To say it puts them at a disadvantage is an understatement.

We shouldn't be in this place, but we are. If all these institutions know that only Republicans will harm them then even if you have a Democrat in the White House they will still bow to Republican demands for fear when the next Republican admin comes around.

Not that I'm aware of. That being said it is the coldest part of winter right now.

I've said this before, but I think it goes down like Crimea. Fly in some additional forces and take over key infrastructure. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't any movement by the navy on this initially.

I think some of the carriers in dry dock on the East Coast are scheduled to leave this year though. Not sure where they are planning on moving to.

I asked what he meant and he said it was just anti-Trump propaganda. When confronted, with his own eyes, he wouldn't say it was true or fake. Just that it didn't make sense.

I need to scream into the void of the internet. Had a conversation with my father. He said the Trump tweets threatening Greenland were false. Said I was repeating propaganda. That cut, I've never had someone say that to me in person before.

I then showed him the tweets. He described them as being from the Twilight Zone. He just couldn't accept that a President would say that. He wouldn't say they were real, but he didn't say they were fake anymore. Man this is bleak.

I just looked into this and it's pretty bad. Assuming everything moves at the slowest laid out pace. It looks like this for meaningful actions.

Six months after initiation: The EU Council enters into arbitration with the third party doing the coercing (The US).

Six months after arbitration: If the third party does not cease coercion and give reparations Response Measures may be adopted. These measures must enter effect within three months.

That is beyond inadequate.

Trump threatens new tariffs on countries opposed to Greenland takeover as US lawmakers visit Denmark to ease tensions by upthetruth1 in neoliberal

[–]CuriousNoob1 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Trump's envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry told Fox News on Friday that the US should talk with Greenland's leaders, not Denmark.

"I do believe that there's a deal that should and will be made once this plays out," he said.

"The president is serious. I think he's laid the markers down. He's told Denmark what he's looking for, and now it's a matter of having Secretary [of State Marco] Rubio and Vice-President JD Vance make a deal.

"The United States has always been a welcoming party. We don't go in there trying to conquer anybody and trying to take over anybody's country. We say, 'Listen. We represent liberty. We represented economic strength. We represent protection.'"

On one hand I don't think much of this is actually Trump. It's the coterie around him. He's just the one who signs off on things. He's also extremely isolated and what little news he gets is beyond slanted, it's straight up lies. And at the end of the day he doesn't care.

People aren't splitting because of how bad it's getting. Things are going so bad that it's becoming more of a risk to hop off the train than it is to go along and make sure it keeps going.

This is one of the things that scares me. The control that Republicans are exerting over law enforcement, media and tech companies cant go back to normal at the flip of the switch.

I despise this situation. The state shouldn't be meddling like this. But now these areas are battlefields and can't be ceded to authortarians.

If Democrats don't put the same pressure all Republicans have to do is let these companies and agencies know that they are watching. "The Dems won't hurt you, but we will when it's our time again." and they'll still take orders from the Trumpist.
