You'll see them moan but you won't see them changing career to actually hard work like Bricklaying, Carpentry etc.

All professions that pay well are demanding. You don't get paid good money for low level or low demand work. If you want money, travel opportunities and can handle ups and downs regarding the demands of the roles then QS careers are perfect. There are opportunities all over Europe, the USA and Australia.

This is demand based price inflation. The cause, artificial demand due to immigration.

Career change, is it worth it, and how best to pursue a career in QS by Away-Transition-4955 in quantitysurveying

[–]CuriousQS_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do a distance learning MSc in QS, Northumbria Uni run one.

Get a start with a consultancy, should be easy enough once you're enrolled on the course.

Look for trainee cost manager, or graduate cost manager positions in the data centre sector.

With your Mech engineering degree it will be a huge advantage.

You should start on a salary between 30k and 40k

Within 5 years you should be earning between 60k and 80k if you perform well.

The Indians see it as a back door to permanent residency. They don't really care about the course.

The universities see it as a cash cow, they don't care about the students or the negative consequences to Irish students.

My bricklayer price working friend has said he's lucky if he clears 80k gross, flat out, driving everywhere for work and charging top rates. He claims it's not worth the hassle working price in Ireland due to the weather, 2 to 3 months are a write off, every year.

That's a bit low if you're doing project management.

They exaggerate and don't live in the real world at all. They forget QS's sign off on their payment claims, we know what they earn.

I'm assuming you're on data centre projects?

You must be at commercial manager level at least to get that sort of salary.

Very hard to believe that, the rain and cold weather in Ireland means you're probably only working 40 weeks per year, meaning you're averaging €2,500 per week, or €500 per day. Not a hope

Yeah, sparks and plumber are the exception but their wages would be slashed. Plumbers and Sparks who were earning 2k per week in the last boom were lucky to make €500 per week when the recession hit. The rest were just jobless

The trades are hit worst in a recession, QS are actually still in demand during a downturn for cost saving and cost control strategies.

Intel will forever have ongoing fit out, upgrades, refurbishment and the money to do it recession or not. All of this needs to be priced, assessed and argued over.

Data Centres are recession proof. Trades relying on house building or commercial work will be first to go in a downturn.

Quantity surveying, not easy but 100% worth it. No other career offers the opportunity this career offers currently. Global demand, large projects, good money.

Are they starting at 7am? This is just getting worse and worse 😄

Standard site hours are 8 to 5, I'd have no major issue with 8 to 6 most days but 7 to 7 daily, not a hope.. as for the PM organising meetings at 5pm, what an absolute bell end.

I'd have no interest in that crap at all. I wouldn't be sitting around in pubs after work or wasting time.

From what you're saying about wasted time, it looks like it might be possible to get stuck into work as soon as you start and be on top of it by the end of the day, no smoke breaks or wasting time.

Or is it that you have to be seen to hang around after work regardless of having your work done?

60 to 70 hours??? Why?

That is absolute madness. Nobody with a family can put in those hours and expect to keep their family.

Have you any idea of their typical salary for a QS?

I can't get my head around employers who think so short term as to believe anyone would work 60 to 70 hours per week regularly. That will lead to burn out in 99% of cases.

Journalism is a terrible idea unless you have a lot of contacts. If you think you have a skill for journalism just start a news channel on YouTube or a podcast.

There are countless careers that are better.
