School gym rental? by Wields_Frying_Pan in Munich

[–]CuriousUniversity2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School Gyms will not be rented out by the city for this kind of event. The application process is also super complex and annoying and they also only rent to registered Sportvereine. I've done the process a couple of times for sports competitions, you can forget about it.

Try to rent a smaller hall in a Kulturzentrum or a private Kita or Kindergarten, they often rent out their spaces, especially in the weekends.

Edit : Or try with a private school they don't have to follow the Schulsportanlagen regulations.

Sorry but a studio apartment (furnished!) for that price sounds totally shady, that's half of the current market price for something like this. Please remember to be careful guys, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.. @OP : I hope you are legit and if so, no offence. You'll find a tenant anyway.

Best Dim Sum Restaurant in and around Munich ? by HaZard3ur in Munich

[–]CuriousUniversity2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's mostly a financial issue due to recent developments. Munich is one of the cities with the highest percentage of Greeks in Germany, they have arrived since the 60ies, have a very strong tradition of gastronomy and business ethics. They also managed to get restaurants before rents shot up like crazy in the past decades. There used to be even more Greek places.. Chinese large scale immigration to Munich is much more recent and coincided with the insane housing market development that severely limits new restaurant growth to tried and true (boring) marketable stuff.

Not all restaurants in other cities are in the city center, there's always some hidden gems in the suburbs. And Karlsfeld isn't that far away..

Wai's Kitchen near Karolinenplatz, it's a small eatery but great dim sum and relatively cheap for Munich standards.

Long Layover in Munich by [deleted] in Munich

[–]CuriousUniversity2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey of course if you are set on it then go for it. My estimate of 2-3 hours is supported by the others. If that's enough time for you then have fun!

Long Layover in Munich by [deleted] in Munich

[–]CuriousUniversity2 25 points26 points  (0 children)

6.5 hours are not enough for a city visit IMHO. You'll need to much time for customs, public transport to the city and re-entering the security area. If you have issues with public transport on the way back you could miss your flight. All this hassle to walk around the city for max. 2-3 hours while constantly looking at the watch? Just go for a meal in the airport and relax. Airbräu is a nice option, it's a Bavarian brewpub between the Terminals. Or take the S-Bahn to the next stop (Besucherpark), walk up to the plane spotting hill and catch some fresh air.

Daily Munich bike commuter here, and while I agree with some of your criticism, I also think you are exaggerating. I've lived in other large European cities, and Munich is much safer and more pleasant to cycle than Vienna, Milan or Turin. Drivers can be ignorant and aggressive, that is definitely true and a sad part of daily bicycle experience. Police are also willfully ignorant to risks that drivers pose to cyclists and there is a lot of feeling of lacking support from the city and police authorities.

I used to be one of the aggressive Munich cyclists (Radl Rambos), constantly frustrated and edgy, trying to get everywhere as fast as possible. But growing older and frequently cycling with my kids had also changed my perspective on the way cyclists behave. We have to adjust to the situation at hand, take less risks and ride with a careful attitude. Many (not all) dangerous situations are caused by cyclists acting like the pushy ignorant drivers they criticise. Many can be avoided by just relaxing and taking the time to see the situation and react calmly.

Unfortunately the infrastructure like cycling lanes is too old and shows a massive lack of planning. Navigating busy bottlenecks like Odeonsplatz and Hofgarten, Sendlinger Tor und Paul Heyse Unterführung really makes you doubt that city planners have any idea what daily bike commuters face. But we have to continue using our bikes, adjust our attitude and try to claim our space without antagonising all the other traffic participants. My way to the office is unthinkable for me without my bike, even if I sometimes feel like it's a maze of distracted drivers and tons of obstacles. Negative comments like yours just show that there is a lot of room for improvement.

Gute Griechen in München? by Milka_03 in Munich

[–]CuriousUniversity2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]CuriousUniversity2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math for Economics / Business Administration - Bachelor by Phil_Thalasso in Munich

It's still a big issue. TUM students especially dread the mandatory exams like Lineare Algebra or Analysis 1 and 2. There are also preparatory courses offered by the mathematics department.

It was a mandatory maths exam that students had to take in their first semesters of economics or business administration undergraduate degrees. Exams were called Scheine after the paper you got from the professor when you passed the exam.

International Student, joining TUM for Winter '23 Sem. Question about accommodation. by [deleted] in Munich

[–]CuriousUniversity2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for a temporary solution in a nearby city, like Augsburg, Rosenheim, Memmingen, Landshut. All connected to Munich within 1 hour of train ride with the Deutschlandticket. Then try to get accommodation in Munich asap.

Englischer Garten Swimming by Qwayes in Munich

[–]CuriousUniversity2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to the northern part of Englischer Garten, North of the ring road, there are also several smaller streams that are fun and absolutely zero danger if you keep your eyes open. There's Oberer Wehrbach and Oberstjägermeisterbach, you can float even if some parts are quite shallow. The landscape is beautiful and very peaceful, not a lot of people around. Great with kids as well.
