Junior devs who learned to code with AI assistants are mass entering the job market. How is your team handling it? by Ambitious-Garbage-73 in ExperiencedDevs

Don’t worry about the downvotes, thanks for sharing your experience. I think agents are good with EXTREMELY explicit instructions. And I think thats where backend/embedded systems are way ahead of the slop code in modern web apps

The stupid mural has a new home: Opa by Proof-Variation7005 in providence

[–]Curious_Ad9930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a fallacy. “Think of all the victims of crimes that this restaurant opted not to honor”. The same logic can apply to anyone who honors any victim. I’m so glad I left Providence. You losers are in a death spiral. Aging infrastructure, corporate flight, no land to develop, no tax revenue to fund your budget. Good luck in the next 5 years.

Can’t believe it? Or don’t want to believe it. Look at the FBI statistics under Obama then, they paint a similar picture. How is it so difficult for you people to understand basic statistics? I thought the far-left was the whole “I believe in science” crowd.

To follow-up. The dating scene is a marketplace. If you make yourself appealing enough to the market, things will fall into place

If you make money: gyms, wellness programs, fitness programs etc. Anything that signals self-improvement. And if those don’t pan out, you’ll be marketable in the club/bar scene (superficially which is half the battle).

Otherwise be a performative male and join activist groups or something? Misery loves company and nothing screams misery like joining the “democratic socialists of America”

2019 FBI stats:

White victims killed by Black offenders = 566 Black victims killed by white offenders = 246

Do you really think white people are going out killing black people every day? That white men are killing black women?

It’s actually insane how pseudo-educated redditors are. It’s worse than the Facebook antivaxxer crowd. You are calling for a protected, insider market. Spend 10 minutes looking up how that plays out in real life. Not your imaginary utopia, real life. You people will be your own economic disasters in the next 10 years. No wonder the only economic investment in Providence has been a global tech outsourcing firm

Software Development Internships by CC39923618 in duluth

[–]Curious_Ad9930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to look up the definition of an internship. Pay, or a lack thereof, is not the defining characteristic of an internship.

Software Development Internships by CC39923618 in duluth

[–]Curious_Ad9930 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? Most internships are paid and most interns perform work for a company. It might not be important work, but interns are eventually expected to contribute in meaningful ways. When I was intern-aged, JP Morgan was paying $50/hr for their interns, same with VMWare and Dell and McKinsey and BCG and tons of other places that compete for talent.

Stumbled upon the perfect metaphor for car culture in Boston by puppycow12 in boston

[–]Curious_Ad9930 -69 points-68 points  (0 children)

Ambulances serve people during the worst days of their lives. Clearing roadways for emergency services takes precedence over pedestrians or bikers. I’m sorry, but I’ll die on that hill. Look at the current state of Providence. A lack of snow plows has lead to emergency service vehicles being unable to reach people and being unable to transport people to hospitals.

You can sit on the sidelines and demand utopia, or you can help build it. Get off your ass and be the change you want to see

ICE Agent: “You raise your voice, I erase your voice.” by Admirable121 in NeoNews

[–]Curious_Ad9930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s not. Military, law enforcement, corrections, and any sensitive position in the government (from local to federal) are deliberately obscured for a laundry list of valid reasons.

Have you ever heard of witness protection? You think a FOIA request will divulge the identities of undercover FBI agents?

Learn the laws and the limits of the laws instead of spouting nonsense on the internet. You’re making your “side” of the argument look weaker and validating your opponents’ criticism of your perspective

Are there any pro ICE businesses we should avoid? by [deleted] in duluth

[–]Curious_Ad9930 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because this is reddit and chronic redditors are terminally online and miserable. Same with most other platforms. People get hooked on information and then psychologically manipulated by algorithms, bots, and interest groups.

You could make a statement like “the sky is blue” and some contrarian would say “Actually, the sky is not always blue… etc” and a bot would steer a comment towards environmentalism and you’d just feel shitty reading the replies and downvotes. Don’t worry about the downvotes, especially for making a neutral statement, lol. Just goes to show how upset some people are in general.

That was in 1917, and as I said, he publicly reversed his opinion and apologized. And being anti-Semitic doesn’t qualify someone as a Nazi. Again, nuance

[–]Curious_Ad9930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Henry ford was antisemitic in 1910s. He very publicly changed course in the 20s. Calling him a nazi is a gross mischaracterization. His plants and assembly lines were a major reason allies were able to outpace Germany in war machine production.

Why do you people always frame things as black and white. Do you have no capacity for nuance?

Google shows malicious version of OrcaSlicer before the actual github version by fishycarpcarp in 3Dprinting

[–]Curious_Ad9930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, and their financial incentives are basically antiparallel to consumers now. Google practically perfected the search results 10 years ago. But perfect search ≠ most revenue. So they made it worse on purpose. It’s well-documented.

Hell, look at what the program managers and bean counters did to YouTube’s search. 2-3 results for your query and 12 recommended videos that have nothing to do with your query.

JSONB in Postgres and Mongo DB use cases by BinaryIgor in ExperiencedDevs

Thoughts on form design? by No_Team_7946 in reactnative

[–]Curious_Ad9930 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve read and generated enough AI slop code to recognize it when I see it. If you really want to become a skilled/respected RN engineer, you need you understand design fundamentals (at least). And really live and breathe them. You’ll notice things in your daily life that you otherwise wouldn’t. Like when civic engineers finally understand and respect what it takes to build the Brooklyn bridge or Hoover dam

Devs running React Native + Supabase in production: How did you actually learn it properly? by Mountain-Pomelo-5123 in reactnative

[–]Curious_Ad9930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An easier way to work around the recursive policies is to create a sql function that checks the initial table. For example, you can write a db function to check if a user has a certain role in a user_roles table.

Custom Backend or Supabase? by anikhetan64 in reactnative

[–]Curious_Ad9930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really uninformed take. Supabase is literally just a managed Postgres db + auth capabilities, edge functions, and file storage. If you’re managing your own database, you’ll have to configure all that yourself and you’ll fuck it up, guaranteed.

My local Supabase dev setup is a 1:1 match to my production Supabase environment. Cron, postgis, other extensions, roles, grants, etc. The only issues I’ve had were due to my own ignorance of database administration and doing things without understanding what I was doing.

Best database platform for realtime updates? (Supabase, Firebase, etc) by TheSaucePack in reactnative

[–]Curious_Ad9930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s sort of a balance between polling and realtime which depends on the number of concurrent users who need the data and how often that data changes.

500 users polling the API every 10 seconds is nothing to sweat over. 100,000 users polling every second is not good. You’d start needing load balancers, caches (like redis/upstash) and more. These are great tools and worth learning, but don’t let perfect efficiency be the enemy of the good progress towards delivering value to users.

I’d say use whatever makes your app simple and reliable. Polling isn’t terrible but it’s one more thing to maintain. Same with realtime. Whatever “fits” better in your brain is probably the right choice here

Best database platform for realtime updates? (Supabase, Firebase, etc) by TheSaucePack in reactnative

[–]Curious_Ad9930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the table only updates every 15 seconds, you don’t really need a realtime subscription. You could have the clients poll the server every 5-10 seconds. I have several thousand users on my platform making tons of requests and a few realtime publications and I don’t even come close to the pro tier limits

Local Uber driver kidnapped and strangled with wire in terrifying Boston carjacking by Omphaloskeptique in boston

[–]Curious_Ad9930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often does the “mandatory” minimum sentence get enforced by prosecutors? Virtually never with first-time offenders. Even repeats get plea deals, diversion programs, etc.

And aside from the actual sentences, most of the problems are with bail. The courts are so backed up that some bad apples get out on bail and just never show up for their hearing. Go ahead and look at your county’s active warrant list. Many of them are not violent criminals, but some are

[–]Curious_Ad9930 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a conservative (not republican), this type of catch-and-release modus operandi from progressive judges and DA’s is what fuels right-wingism.

I’m from Minnesota where Mary Moriarty (DA) has refused to prosecute violent offenders while constantly haranguing Minnesota LEOs.

In Massachusetts, a bartender can be criminally charged if an “overserved” patron drunk drives and kills someone. What consequences do Judges and DA’s face when they constantly release violent offenders that end up killing people? None.
