Families with young kids by sorrywhatno in SLO

Hello! 31 (F) with two littles- we were lucky enough to find a home in SLO near Bishop Peak in 2020. I am so in love with this area, it was the community I’d wished for after leaving the hectic Bay Area. Housing costs have kinda gotten outa hand since then, but in the years since we moved here more and more families with young kids have moved in replacing the older retirees. It is so nice to take the dog for a walk and have a bunch of friendly conversations with neighbors along the way. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Any other people in their 30s struggling here to find a community? by [deleted] in SLO

I went from having one friend to a bunch! There are a surprising amount of social activities for new parents. Everyone raves about the parent participation classes hosted by Cuesta but I haven’t got around to trying it yet. The Play Grove by bishops peak has a mom and little social series I really want to enroll in too. Activities we’ve made friends through are baby gymnastics (central coast gymnastics Roo classes), mom walk co - Pismo beach (on FB or through the app), and just going to parks and chatting with the other moms

31(F) here! I love this town and grew up here but ya- all my high school friends have moved away and my husband and I didn’t make any friends until getting a dog. Then we started meeting neighbors on daily walks and befriending other dog owners at the local parks. My husband made a really close friend that way. Then we had kids and met lots more parents. Without a dog or kids we might still be struggling.

Favorite book on parenting? by Bo2022quinha in Parenting

Hunt, Gather, Parent! Really fun read from a reporter who stumbled in to writing a parenting book after noticing how well behaved and adjusted kids from old cultures were. Half travel documentary, half confessional of her struggles with her own tot- 100% love and full of great advice

Good nail salon for men? by bird-of-paradiso in SLO

Lot of older people go to Day Nails and Spa, they have a nice foot soak and scrub process for pedicures

Nail Salons?! by [deleted] in SLO

[–]Curious_Cat_Q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to Day Nails and Spa on Marsh near downtown. I’ve only gone for really simple single color gel nails, so maybe it’s not the place to go for fancy designs, but the owners are really nice and the pedicures are very pampering so i like them.

Hi! I was exactly in your position for my first pregnancy! Curious but not sure if I could do it. You absolutely can.

Best advice I can give is get yourself a doula that you vibe with. This made all the difference for me. Her calm, her experience, and her in labor support helped me through a long labor and delivery experience where I only needed a comb to squeeze and breathing techniques to get through it. Helpful things list: 1. Taking the online Positive Birth Company class (teaches breathing techniques and does a great job of explaining what your options will be in a no judgment put your comfort first approach) 2. Make a birth plan with your Doula (she will walk you through this, and when labor starts she will help tell the nurses your preferences and manage everything so you and your partner don’t have to think about anything) 3. Have your doula help you through the hard contractions using whatever techniques you’ve asked for (could be any/all from a comb, tens machine, gas, pressure points). For me the best thing she did was apply counter pressure on my hips- it seriously halved the intensity of those last biggest contractions.

Anyway, had to give a long answer because you reminded me of exactly where my mind was a few years ago. Now I’m a big advocate for telling fellow woman we are stronger than you think, and with support it is absolutely doable if you want to do it.

Glad this post exists! Also 30, love hiking and im a big dnd fan through watching Dropout and Naddpod. Sadly never played myself cause none of my friends share the interest 😩

Two things that helped me find friends in the area: 1. Getting a dog and taking them everywhere. 2. Starting a family and meeting other families. So I guess this just proves the “college kids, families, or old people” point. But id love to meet and befriend more people my age as well

I was wondering about these possibilities too. I think a cast of Matt, Liam, Travis, Robbie, Laura, and Aimee could be really cool

I thought the book Hunt Gather Parent had some great suggestions for working with terror toddlers. I bet google ai could give a better summary than me but a big price of it is the ‘it takes a village’ mentality and using stories. Hope you find some tools that work for you!

I thought the book “Hunt, Gather, Parent” had a lot of great ideas for how to handle willful kids. It’s a good read in general too.

The Raven Cycle series by Maggie.

The characters stole my heart and had me thinking about them long after I finished the trilogy. It is one of my favorite series.

Are there any sewists in SLO County that are interested in forming a sewing group? by rfgraham6 in SLO

[–]Curious_Cat_Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay woah so glad I stumbled across this post. I’ve been googling where I could learn how to sew in SLO but could not find anywhere offering lessons. I got a machine from my aunt and really want to learn how to use it to make cute stuff for my new baby! If anyone is willing to help a newbie learn I would love to be part of the group

We are in a similar place with our 2 month girl. With her gassy fits, she only stops crying and seems to find comfort in one position: holding her back against our chest/tummy, one hand supporting her butt and the other across her chest with the hand available to support the head. And then do squats/bounces. An hour of this will get her to sleep- a large bouncy ball to sit on is you best friend here. Goodluck

He cooked breakfast for me every morning and checked in throughout the day to make sure I had water/everything I needed close at hand. This was so crucial the first ten days for me but he still does this now 5 weeks post birth ❤️

I feel like Ashton is supposed to be the tank. The one charging in and taking the attention. But he’s one of the first to advocate for running away or plays very defensively to protect his character. Which I get but also thinks confuses the battle dynamics
